Hello. I have been a DVC member for almost 8 years now and I'm also Gold Castaway Club member for being on 8 Disney Cruises.

I am planning on a cruise for next year and I want to use some of my DVC points for myself and then pay cash for the others. I have done this a few times in the past and received the 10% discount for Gold Castaway. However I just called and was told "No." I cannot get the 10% discount in points when I use my points for the cruise. I don't understand why?

I was told that Disney Vacation Club is a different entity than Disney Cruise Line and that is why. As far as I'm concerned Disney is Disney. They will not honor the cruise line discount, but will give me a 5%.

Then I got a little frustrated because MS told me that "sometimes" their rate is cheaper than the cruise line. So I said "Okay! how much is this cruise on this date so I can compare." They were just under $1,000 more! So for me to transfer my reservation over to DVC will cost me more, that's #1. And number 2, for all the other folks on the cruise that I am paying cash for I will only get a 5% discount.

I've used my points in the past and was able to do so. Can someone explain why not? And also will I at least get the discount for the cash that I'm paying for everyone else? Thank you

The DVC to DCL swap is contractually defined. Disney isn't actually Disney; different divisions are quite siloed. DVC contracts with DCL for exchanges, and DVC members are charged one of the highest available rates for staterooms on DCL per contract.

What's even more disappointing is that DVC and DCL are run by the same executive, Karl Holz.

I don't believe a discount is in order going through DVC, the only discount in the past has been booking while on board or the couple of specials they've had along the way. The way the cash price is determined, the cash portion through DVC is usually more than it is through DCL or a TA, at least for anything that has much of an advance discount and isn't short notice. Just realize this is the landscape and determine if you want to use points or not. For the points portion you'll normally receive between $6 & $7.50 per point but look at the specifics for each cruise options as you are doing for this one and see as there are rare exceptions where the numbers are more favorable. You may want to consider renting your points and paying cash instead if the difference is important to you.

There is no discount for being a Gold Castaway Club Member. You can save approx. 10% by booking a future cruise while on-board. Since you can't re-book on-board using points, you can call DVC within 10 days of disembarking and book a future cruise and receive the rebooking savings.

You are correct and yes I did make a reservation prior to leaving my last cruise. Unfortunately I will lose that discount and the onboard credit if I use my DVC points for one person to go on the cruise. At this point I think the best solution is to rent out my points.
