transferring photos from memory card

HeeHee... I'm going to agree with both sides on the issue of portable hard drives. I have one and love it! I have all my photos and my music loaded on it. When my memory cards (1-1gig & 1 512K) get full I dump it to the drive. Once we get home I burn my photos to Cds.

The HD makes it good when I get to visit family & friends. I pop it in my bag and can take it out when I get there, plug into their PC and catch up on what's been happening.

I "learned" all this when my laptop died and I lost everything on it. Now I'm a desktopper again, but still fairly portable! :sunny:

IYou prefer to spend $200 on an ipod-sized HD when you could spend about $15 -$30 for a 256 MB (or even 512 MB) card these days?

Depends what card you need.My camera ONLY takes memory stick Pro Duo cards and a 2GB one costs about 150 euros here, so about $180. Not kidding. The HD cost $150. I dont like the "eggs in one basket" thing either, but I've lost too many of these tiny little cards and never had a problem with the hard drive. My camera also stores low-res copies of all the pics taken so I can never lose everything. It really depends on what card your camera is using and how much they cost where you live.

The portable hard drive is good for certain uses; for something like WDW I wouldn't personally choose to use one but they are very useful. I also subscribe (mentioned it very early in the thread) of the theory of multiple cards as backup as well.

I just don't see the sense in using Disney's system financially. I understand some people may prefer it in theory, but when you look at the details (as WillCAD posted above), you can only do 120 pics per disc as a hard limit. You can't fill the CD. So dumping a 1GB card is going to cost you much more than $12.95, depending on what resolution you use? That's forty bucks for a one-time thing, when a memory card lasts forever and is cheaper if you watch the sales.

I agree, compared to buying one of Disney's $100 cards it's a bargain, but I really do think what makes the most sense is if you are asking yourself beforehand if you will have enough storage, it pays to check out the sales. Staples and Amazon generally have them very cheap - I just picked up a 2GB CF card for about $45.

Plus, remember, memory cards are pretty decent investments - even if you don't need it all the time, it's good to have a backup anyway (kids birthday parties and the like - if your card blows you won't be running to the store while the candles are burning, LOL), and you can always dump it on eBay if you really don't need it.

Whichever method you use just make sure that you don't make the same knuckle headed mistake that I did back in May. I came prepared with 2 x 2gb , 1 x 512mb and 1 x 256mb cards all secure in a waterproof case. I also had my laptop that I used to transfer the photos to my web server as I slept. Oh how clever thought I... of course we get to Epcot for the Flower and Garden Festival and I realize than not only have I left all of my spare cards back at the room but I had also removed the main card from the camera and left it in my laptop. All that planing and i still spent $64 for a measly little 128mb card. I only use it for extra special occasions now as it is so valuable. :rotfl2:
