Transfering vs Renting points

We are considering booking our October DCL cruise with cash instead of points. We've been reading posts on the rent/trade board for a day or so, but wanted some expert advice to see if we're on the right track.

Is transfering points to another member the easiest way to go (provided they pay up front)? It looks easiest because they could make and change their own reservations and we would be finished with the transaction once the transfer was done.

Our use year is June and that's when our points will be available. Can we transfer them before June or do we have to wait, and do they retain the same use year when transfered? Could the recipient make a reservation with them before June 05?

Yes, transferring between members is the easiest (and best) way, for the reasons you listed. You have to keep in mind that points can only be transferred in one direction in a given use year, so if you transferred out, you couldn't transfer in during that use year.

I think I know the answer to that -- but one thing I've learned about transferring is it is much more complex than it seem it should be. I'm hoping someone else like Doc will help you with that. I don't want to give you info from my vast erroneous zone!

You may transfer 2005 points into someone else's 2005 Use Year and they will have access to them immediately. Transferred points are supposed to retain their original home resort and Use Year status, but typically will assume the characteristics of the contract into which they were moved. If they are moved into another member's September 2005 Use Year, they would have to be borrowed (by that member) to use them earlier.

If you have points transferred into your account in order to make a reservation at a resort other than your own, you can have MS manually track those points to your benefit. (ie- if you own at VWL- but want to reserve a GV at BWV 11 months ahead- you can have BWV points transferred to your account and MS can use those points to make a reservation for you using the 11 month priority. They may need to manually track the points to force the computer to allow their use- but it can be done.)

Enjoy!

Now I'm going to jump on with a question as I've also been watching the DVC boards deciding how to best do something with points I cannot use. We have a 2 BR villa at HH reserved on 7/25 for 3 nights (99 pts). These are banked points. This was going to be a trip for DH's retirement. Well, he already got another job and we can't use them. Does this mean we cannot transfer as they're banked and must rent the reservation? We always use our points. This is the first time I'm in this situation.

Thanks for any help.

Banked points cannot be transferred so you're stuck there.

You don't mention your use year. If you cancel the reservation, the points will be returned to your account and you can still use them, but you only have till the end of your current use year.

Maybe you could use them somewhere in the Disney Collection? Some kind of local area get-away?

You could try to rent your reservation as it stands, or cancel the reservation, get the points returned, and try to rent the points themselves. Since you can't transfer, if someone rented your points, you would have to make the reservation for them using your points.

Thanks for the quick reply. My use year in September. I did think of going into New York City two nights this summer to use the points. It just doesn't seem like it's the most "economically sound" use of points.

So I'm still pondering what to do, but I know I have to decide quickly.

Thanks to all those who replied. I dusted off the docs we received at our closing and read through what they had to say about transfers. Lots of legal wording and now everything is as clear as......mud. :) Seriously, I think I am catching on. I do want to clarify one thing before I head over to the rent/trade board.

The points I want to transfer are June 2005 points and have not been banked or borrowed. I can transfer them now and do not have to wait until June. The recipient can make a reservation with them right away if the stay is after June 1 or they may even borrow them into this use year for a stay before June 1. Right??
