I have an 8mm video camera with about 18 years of tapes piling up that we never watch. I'd like to transfer them to discs for
X-Mas presents for friends and family.
Do you know what I need to buy as far as equipment to do this myself? I think it will be less expensive this way than to have someone transfer them for me. I'm thinking about buying one of those disc video cameras but I'm holding off until the price comes down.

How I did some a few years ago on the cheap was get a player for the 8 mm and a decent video camera, TV and VCR (I had all of these)

I basically just set it up in a very dark room and taped the screen- I had it set up to tape directly into the VCR and with the TV I knew exactly what was being recorded- It wasnt the best way but you couldnt get much better without spending $$ on a tape to tape transfer- Once I had it all on VHS- I took it to my uncle who added some titles and music then mass copied it-

To have someone do it would be about 12-15 cents a foot- Which really isnt bad unless you have a ton of them (We had about 50-60 reels)

Here is a very recommend place where I get alot of my video projects finished at :)
