Transfer vs. rent

Can anyone explain to me the difference between transfered points and renting? I am a new DVC member. I have rented within the past 3 years, but decided to take the jump.

We are going in the spring and using our own points, but my mother-in-law wants to go with us. I want to get her a studio. Is it better to have her rent from someone, or is it better to transfer the points to me, and I pay for it? I am wondering if it is better to transfer so that I can reserve her studio close to or next to our two bedroom.

Any thoughts or input would be great.

Thanks! :confused3

As a member, I prefer the transfer idea, since those points are now my responsibility and under my control. No hassles with checking back and forth with the person making the ressies, miscommunication, etc...
Just remember to take your time, find somebody you trust and feel you can communicate with (get phone numbers, check address, post count - all due diligence), and get references.
Also, remember you can only transfer once a year, either in or out.
Welcome Home!! :cool1:

So if I transfer a members points into my account, is there less risk for someone running off with my money? Does it usually cost the same? Does the person giving me points make the phone call to MS to transfer to my account? I like that idea better since a renter can no longer call to confirm a ressie wih MS. Thoughts?

The person you are transferring from has to make the call to member services. Some people do a three way call, an idea I dont really like because it gives MS an opportunity to mess up. In any case if you are purchasing points via transfer odds are the owner will want payment in half or payment in full up front. So the opportunity to run off with your funds is still there.

The chance that you will lose your money is the reason why renting discounts accomodations at Disney World by 50% (give or take). Whether lose you money means theft or means that you are unable to use the points or take your trip.

I read Item C. of the board DVC R/T FAQs (pasted below) and need some clarification please. Why would I want to transfer any of my points to someone else's account and not receive compensation? Is it actually a case of "Wink-Wink, Look the Other Way" by Disney?
Thanks!

C. Points for Transfer: Posting of willingness to Transfer points to another DVC-Member. In this situation, no reservation is made, but an offer to transfer points directly from one member's account to another member's account. NOTE: DVC rules prohibit the transfer of points in exchange for any type of compensation.

There is the same risk as far as someone running off with the money. There is a long thread on the DVC-Operations board about this very problem (the "Sad Story" thread). A member wired money to another member and the member who received the money didn't call MS within the agreed time frame to transfer the points. The vast majority of transactions go smoothly but I suggest you read that thread, primarily for the criteria various posters have listed on what to look for when deciding whether or not to do business with another DIS board member.

To the best of our knowledge, Disney has not prohibited a transfer because of money being paid. We believe that statement is in the POS to shield DVC from any issue where a transfer may have gone bad.

For example, John agrees to pay Joe for some points to be transferred. Joe transfers the points, but John doesn't pay. Joe can't go to Disney and try to get the points back because he wasn't paid, because Disney says you can't transfer points for payment in the first place.

This effectively legally removes Disney from any dispute between the tranferring parties.

Thanks! KindSorta what I thought/hoped. It's nice to know DVC isn't limiting this practice. As my son gets older, we expect to take fewer WDW trips. While we haven't yet decided to sell our membership at BWV, it's nice to know we have an alternative. Maybe just sell pts. until he has kids and can use the membership. :thumbsup2

It means that when you pay a member approximately $10-$12/point to rent; that will about about 50% of the rack rate of the room from Disney.
