Please bear with me....this may get confusing...

We're planning a large trip in a few years entailing the use of 300 points. We know a member that has enough points to cover our entire vacation, but now that we are members, we also have some points to contribute.

Ok, here's where it gets tricky. We have a 100 point contract which we really need to stretch to take our own vacations. My dad is planning on paying for the big vacation and he is planning on renting ALL of the points from our DVC member/friend. We are not planning to take a vacation that year on our own plus we will have at least 10 points banked. So, we'll have at least 110 points available of our own. Dad wants two 2BR's at OKW for a week. If we borrow 10 points, we can book 4 weeknights ourselves.

Here's my question... we will need a total of 300 points to cover the weeknights (we'd like to just pay cash for the weekends) but can we TRANSFER in the extra 180 WITHOUT having to borrow the other 90 that our contract would have available?:confused3 I think I read that you cannot have more than 300% of your contract points available at any given time, so would I have to borrow ALL of our points before I can do a transfer?

Our points are the following:
2009: 101 available (99 reserved already), 100 being banked into 2010
2010: Planning a vacation requiring that we borrow 90 points from 2011
2011: 10 points banked into 2012
2012: Dad's vacation plan....110 points available
2013: Borrow 10 points....Do I have to borrow the other 90 before I can do
a transfer?:confused3

Any thoughts or insight?

No - you can have as many point transferred into your account as you can find from one source and then combine those with current, banked and borrowed points from your own account.

If you wish to make a Home Resort reservation at 11 months, you'll need to find transfer points from the same Home Resort - otherwise any points will be fine within 7 months.

The 300% rule applies only to the points actually available in your own contract and does not apply to transfers.

Enjoy! :)

Thanks for the quick reply, Doc!

Can you clarify, though...will I need to borrow my own points from 2013 or can I leave those untouched and only use my banked and transferred points? I assume, based on your answer, that I can leave my points alone and not have to borrow.

You will not need to borrow unless you need those points to make the reservation. MS will use banked, current and transferred points before borrowing any points from the following Use Year.

However, if you will have enough points using the borrowed points, I'd sure consider just borrowing my own points and not get a transfer until you really need it.

The only reason we'd do the transfer is because my dad is paying for the trip and so we don't want to tie up a bunch of our points (particularly those we'd rather bank than borrow) when we already have a rental/transfer planned.

Thanks for the help! This should work out perfectly. I'll tell my dad that he can plan on transferring the points and then we can make the weeknight reservations ourselves. I assume that if we pay cash (through MS) for the weekend, we can link the reservations and not have to switch rooms, correct? It would not be convenient to have to move 15 people!
