Been watching a flight from Barcelona to Toronto for several months and it's been staying around $2000 for our family to fly. Just today it's gone up over $500. I was trying to hold off as long as possible for various reasons, but now I'm wondering if I've missed my opportunity. I've been told that the airlines have sales around December for these kinds of flights. I'm not sure now whether I should jump on this rate before it goes up more, or wait to see if it will come down again. Anyone have any insight?

This is a Swissair flight in April 2010 BTW.

There are no guarantees. It may or may not

Generally I would guess that deals for flights in April from Europe should come out by the end of the year. However, I am not sure wether this applies to one-way tickets as well. I find that here in Europe one-way is often more expensive than a return ticket even if you don't use the return flight at all. Did you check that?

But I just checked what 2,500 Canadian Dollars would be in Euros at the moment and to be honest, I think that's a rather reasonable price considering that it is a one way ticket. I don't know wether others have gotten better prices... :confused3

Besides that, I find that any reduced ticket prices might not be available for every day, so if you want to fly on a specific day, I think early booking makes a lot of sense. Also, April might mean Easter break. Most of europ (but I don't know about Spain) seems to have the two weeks around Easter off from school, so it is less likely to get good deals then. And finally Swissair would calculate the ticket prices in Swiss Francs or possibly Euros, so any exchange rate fluctuation might work for or against you also.

Yes, it's in Euros. Unfortunately I didn't write down what it was originally, but I think the price has gone up along with an increase in the Euro.

Yes, the Euro suddenly has been very strong recently - just after I paid off a huge amount on my January vacation thinking the Euro might fall... :headache: I guess the lesson is - don't try to speculate with the exchange rate... :confused3

Personally, I prefer to have my intercontinental flights booked as long as the price is reasonable. I booked our January flights to WDW in June and paid 200 Euros more than the flights we had for January 2009, but those were a special short term promotion in December 2008 and then we could only get the price on odd days. So, I guess it comes down which risk you rather want to live with: booking now and risking a better price to come around later on or booking later with no better prices, but rather higher prices if availability is going down.... Sorry that I can't be of more help!! :goodvibes

Strangely enough the price went back down today. I really need to wait a couple more weeks at least before booking, so hopefully I won't lose out. Does anyone know if you have to supply a name for a child that would be lap-sitting only? I'm not sure if I'd be able to book now as our 2nd child hasn't even been born, but would be going on the flight in April. Usually the airlines need the names of everyone flying.
