Training Schedule for DL Half Followed by WDW Full?

I guess the title says it all. Some background: I've been running for just about a year now and have the 2009 WDW half marathon under my belt. I've got to get that Coast-to-Coast bling and I really want a Mickey medal after that, so I'm registered for both the 2009 DL half and the 2010 WDW full :scared1:.

Now I'm trying to find a training plan for a novice that allows for a half marathon with a (first-ever) full marathon 18 weeks later. Are there any training plans that have a 13- or 14-mile distance on the schedule 18 weeks before the full? And if there's not a good off-the-shelf solution out there, what would you recommend?

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Hi Kim,

I am in exactly the same boat, 1 1/2 under my belt, DL 1/2 in sept (gotta get that medal!) then first full WDW in January.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :goodvibes

Thanks Kirsty

Hi Kirsty! I saw your thread about when to start training and thought about hijacking it with my question, but figured I'd start my own thread instead. I'm in Alabama and, like you, I'm getting really nervous about training through the hot summer. Digging out the training plan I followed for the WDW half, it looks like I should start officially training for the DL half by 5/2. Yikes!

I am kind of in the same boat. I am doing my first full on October 25th and really want to do the WDW Full. I have no idea if the legs will be up to it yet.

I was responding more to your question about training in the heat. It gets no where near as hot as Alabama up here but we get very humid. I do most of my running after dark. I actually do a lot of midnight running in the summer. I like the solitude and get to stay out of the sun.

Wow thats soon, if I dig out the training plan I used for the princess I'd be sat on my butt till a week before then panicing, I am determend not to do that again :cutie: Heat is a problem, midnight runs sound fun firedancer just dont know if i can stay up that late :surfweb:

There has to be some training plan to fit in both events without dying of sunstrock :confused3

Kirsty

PS sorry for hijacking your thread, since i did have my own:sad2: but I saw your thread and realized you articulated my problem better than I did :thumbsup2

Hi, I'm currently in the middle of such a training plan. My first half was on Feb 15th, and my first full is upcoming on May 24th. (14 weeks in between)

I'm clearly pretty novice, so take everything I say with that in mind, but I see two basic courses of action:

1) pick a training plan that looks good, and start from the point where you do a 13 mile long run, and go from there. Actually, though, you may want to "regress" just a bit, and perhaps start your training runs back at 11-12 miles following your half. Speaking from experience, it took a full week and then some following the half before I really felt like doing any serious running again. If the training plan doesn't have enough weeks between the 11-12 mile run and the date of the marathon, just duplicate a few of them.

2) Just fake up your own training plan. Most plans I've seen are all pretty similar. One long run per week, gradually increasing distance, and 2-3 additional runs per week, typically one shorter and one middle distance, and possibly one more devoted to speed work, hill training, etc. Make sure that about three weeks before race day, you start to taper. For instance, on each of the three Sundays leading up to race day you might do 20, 10, 5 miles. Also, I would personally (again, take my advice for what it's worth) throwing in a few shorter local races if you can find them... the shorter distance will be a nice "recovery" in a sense, and it can be a nice change of pace to be with other people and have the water stops provided for you.

I did this last year. I started running March 08, training for the DL 1/2. I signed up for WDW 09 full end of September, so I just increased my mileage. It is plenty of time. I unfortunately wasn't able to train as much as I wanted to due to a new job, but I still finished the full with plenty of time to spare. If I had been diligent with my long runs, I have no doubt that I would have finished with my original time goal.

Good luck!
