Training Music

I find soundtracks work very well too. Last week I didn't feel like listening to any of the playlists I've created for training, so I decided to listen to all the songs I have from Shrek 1, 2 and 3. That was a fun workout :)

Anyone else listen to Podcasts and Audio Books instead of music? I have been getting 2 audio books a month from Audible.com. Some of my favorite podcasts are,

History of Rome
History according to Bob
This American Life
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History
Common Sense by Dan Carlin
WDW Today
The DIS podcast
The Moth

I don't listen to anything if I am racing. Only training runs.

I've wondered about that, but would think that I would only hear the noise e.g. I would totally miss the words. That is the reason I no longer listen on my driving commute. Well that and a couple close calls.

Yikes, that is scary. I can see where you would have to have it cranked up in the car. Engine noise, wind, tractor trailers. Plus things are happening so quickly your mind can't wander off. When I run in the morning I can leave my iPod low and still hear everything around me. It doesn't have that wall of sound that you have playing music. Plus Podcasts are free :)

I like to warm up with a couple of Disney songs. My favorites of those are: One Jump Ahead from Aladdin, Heigh-Ho from Snow White & The Seven Dwarves, and my very very favorite Colonel Hathi's March (The Elephant Song) from The Jungle Book.

Non Disney, I've been listening to:
  1. Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani
  2. Tik Tok by Ke$ha
  3. Run This Town by Jay-Z (feat. Rhianna)
  4. Paper Planes by M.I.A.
  5. I Gotta Feeling by The Black Eyed Peas
  6. Stronger by Kanye West
  7. Up Up & Away by Kid Cudi
  8. Low by Flo Rida (feat. T-Pain)
  9. Calabria 2007 by Enur

For a while, I was exclusively a hard rock guy for runs, but now I've found some really good EDM (electric dance music) that I really enjoy and the beats are usually fast enough to keep my cadence in line.

I've also found some good rap artists that I've incorporated into my running listens. Lately, I've been rotating...

Lecrae (new Album Gravity)
Family Force 5
Live performances by: Afrojack, Avicii, Skrillex, and Martin Solveig

I have weird and extremely diverse musical tastes. Next week I'm likely to be listening to classical and Motown.

I listen to Podrunner mixes. I pick a BPM and go with it. It helps me keep my cadence nice and steady. I keep it fairly low so I can hear ambient sound (and I have headphones that let in the ambient as well), so it's really a cadence crutch more than anything. But if I'm doing track work I'll crank it louder for motivation. I feel like choosing a BPM is a lot like setting the speed on a treadmill for me.
