As you are running, what song sticks out for you during your run?

I love all types of music. I have specifically found that songs with a really good beat/cadence helps in my pace. Last night on my 4 mile run I especially found these three songs helpful:

"The Way You Move" - Outcast
"I'm Yours" - Jason Mraz
"Ants Marching" - Dave Matthews

How about yourself?

Two types of music for me...

Rock and/or roll

I was a cycle instructor for 9 years. After a year of following the standard 'Spinning" protocol I said to heck with it and played rock. I have hundreds of 55 minute mixes that range from a nice constant beat to ones that rock hard for the hill climbing classes.

Range from BTO, Nugent, Ozzy, Styx, REO, Beatles, Elvis (yes Elvis), 3 doors down, CCR, Nickelback, Stones, Aerosmith, Lincoln Park and Zep.

I could use some new song suggestions! I'm really getting tired of my playlist. I think I have to go back to some classic '80s and '90 stuff.

I love Holiday by Greenday, sometimes I replay it 4-5 times to keep me going :)
Black Eyed Peas
Usher
Disney movie songs that are upbeat
don't laugh...I love my DS' ESPN Jock Jam's CD from when he was like, 5....
(Whoomp! There it is, Tootsee Roll, Strike it Up, Pump Up the Jam, Pump Up the Volume, The Power, Gridiron Groove, Get Ready For This, etc.)

I'm a chick, I know my music is lame ;)
That's why I'd love suggestions too!

I only use music on a treadmill, and even then not very often. My playlist is mostly punk, hard rock, and metal, such as:

Rise Against - Architects
Fear - Let's Have a War
Drowning Pool - Bodies
Mudvayne - Scream with Me
Disturbed - Indestructible
A7X - Afterlife
Cancer Bats - Hail Destroyer
Rev Theory - Justice
Slipknot - Wait & Bleed
Gogol Bordello - Immigradiana
Volbeat - Still Counting

Ok, no laughing. My current favorites are Sexy Back and I Like to Move It. One mile to go: Chariots of Fire. And for the finish line...Eye of the Tiger.

Hey!!! I said no laughing!

Love the Holiday sugguestion Minniebeth. It's now part of the playlist!

Ain't no shame gurrrrl!!!! :cool1::thumbsup2:cheer2:

For me it's David Guetta, Lady Gaga, Flo-rida, The Roots, Michael Jackson, Black Eyed Peas, Cee-lo, Outkast Bombs over Baghdad is the best ever! Anything fun and fast..Welcome to the jungle...:thumbsup2

I would never laugh at anyone's running playlist. Mine is so odd and diverse.

I have much of what was mentioned here but find my list kinda falls into three categories:

1. Current/Recent Pop/R&B music (Usher, Flo Rida, Karmin, Ke$sha, Carly Rae Jepsen, etc.)
2. 80s & 90s "rock" and "pop" - MJ, Van Halen, Footloose, Wham, etc
3. Big Band Standards either performed by the originals or current versions - Sinatra, Michael Buble, Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett, Harry Connick Jr, etc. Yes, i run to Hello Dolly, Face the Music and Dance, Puttin on the Ritz, and more - the beat is perfect for my pace.

I love playlists - it shows so much about people and running playlists can really show what motivates people. For me, I love to dance and categories #1 and #3 make me want to get up and MOVE!

I need to find a 4th category though, now that I'm getting up in long run mileage!

Oh - I almost forgot my holy grail of running songs: King of New York - from Newsies.

I want to add that John and I are in the same camp. Music is only a treadmill thing for me. I would rather hear what's around me on a long run or in a race. You will not headphones on a few recent races... I was less than trained in the last Goofy so I needed the mental pickmeup to keep me going --- it didn't think it worked all that well and yanked them early in the races.

I'm the exact opposite, I feel like I *need* my headphones on for the long distances (well, 1/2 marathon training long, lol). my BFF and I are doing the 1/2 in January together and she doesn't do music/headphones. I told her I need them at least some of the time, she was like "who am I going to talk to?", lol. I can't, just can't talk for the duration of that kind of distance. :upsidedow

I too love to see the music everyone is listening to!

I listen to one of the stations on Pandora. They have all sorts of stations from specific genres of workout music to current hits, etc. I like having the variety without having to pay to add music to my iPod. Plus, I get to listen to new music.

I'm with your friend on this one. I find I do much better if I've got people to talk to along the way. I've met some great people during marathons all over the world just by chatting them up along the way. Some I ran the majority of the race with, others just a few miles. Some of them have become good friends and we still keep in touch.

I have Chariots of Fire as well. I placed it where I thought I'd be past MK and headed back to EPCOT for Princess this year. Now thanks to the Olympics, I see Mr. Bean when I hear that song :rotfl:

It's way better really to run like you do! :thumbsup2When I was training for the Princess with my marathon coach and friend (many time IronWoman, has maybe 30 marathons under her belt), she wouldn't let me use my headphones. She said it was so important to run and be able to maintain conversation. She also said it's a huge safety issue to be able to hear your surroundings, be aware of your body. That was when we trained together. When I'm on my own I choose to listen to music. I really get pumped from musical motivation more than anything!:goodvibes:goodvibes

I have everything from rap to rock and of course disney park music. I train with it but most races I run with my dad so I have one ear bud in my ear and the other one out. I sometimes need a mental pick up.

One of my half this year was a struggle for me and was a mental victory. I have no idea what songs were playing really but I do remember the last song that came on and it was perfect timing. The song was "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" from the Carousel of Progress which I am known to sing around the house. So my finish line photos had huge smiles on my face.

I've been listening to /playing the "Zombies, Run" app for the past couple of weeks. Much to my surprise, I find it really engaging!

A week ago I would have thought those songs were too slow. However, this week I was talking to a friend and he suggested I try listening to slower songs that I normally would not think I could run to. I was quite amazed, actually.:cool1:

I'm old (47) so my preference of music is much calmer than I thought it should be. Happy to know I can run to my favorites. My playlist has music that you would not think someone like me would enjoy and it is probably a good thing I can;t understand a lot of the words. :rotfl:

I too love to see the music everyone is listening to!

This is me. Music really motivates me. Running or cleaning house...doesn't matter!

My DH is an Ironman and marathon runner and he rarely listens to music. He also hates that I do. I am sure it will be a bone of contention come January.

Thanks to this thread for giving me a few more songs to add to my playlist.

I think that's awesome! I keep reading about how friendly everyone is in the races. I'm just not at the point where running is that second nature to me so it would be distracting to me and slows me down for sure. I hope to get to that point where I can strike up some great conversations!

I know your coach is right~ maybe it's a mental thing to work on for me, but if I have some good music, it really keeps me going, I kind of get lost in time with it. Without it, every minute feels long, lol.

Glad to know I'm not the only one :) I always have music playing around me especially when I cook or clean (and run apparantly)! I'd love to know how the Ironman competitors and marathon runners do it without music. Very strong mental discipline I imagine!

I'm going to work on some new music this week and list what I find.

I am one of those who rarely listens to music when training and never when racing. That said, when I having a bad day mentally on long runs I have a pretty eclectic mix available to turn on if I need it - rock, big band, folk, show tunes, Disney and something that may just set my play list apart......Ohio State University Marching Band music!

I have a very personal connection to OSUMB - when I listen to the band's recordings I am not only listening to my DS playing - he was in the percussion section for 5 years - but I get to hear my DH on some tracks as the band's long time announcer. Hearing the music and husband's voice really get me over those tough mental hurdles on long, solitary training days. The 2 men in my life always inspire me!

I run to rock and alternative mostly. Yesterday I thought my playlist was a little weird, but it wasn't until 2.5 miles that I realized I had grabbed my DH's iPod.

Seether, Linkin Park, Ozzy, Papa Roach, Royal Bliss, Chevelle, Alice in Chains, Live, Breaking Benjamin, Skillet, The Bravery, etc.

Other stuff I have thrown on the list:
Footloose and Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins
Rush by Aly and AJ
Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson
Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash
Runaway by Bon Jovi
I run for Life by Melissa Etheridge
Born to Run by Bruce Springstein
Chariots of Fire
How Soon is Now by Morrissey (my stride is always longer on this song)
Tom Sawyer by Rush

I love this song, . Before you ask, I don't understand a word of Korean but I love to run to it and the video makes me think South Korea is far cooler than the rest of the world is apparently giving them credit for.

I also love the Beastie Boys (Sabotage makes me want to run AND re-enact the video by sliding across a car hood), Jump Jive and Wail by Brian Setzer (I dance along), Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley (I like to sing it, "Never gonna give you long run!").

And hello, We Will Rock You by Queen, Eye of the Tiger by Survivor and Don't Stop Believin' by Journey. But those go without saying, right?
