just a remembrance of our trip a few years ago.......when we were at the Orlando Airport.....I was standing waiting for my dh to get our bags and out of the crowds come a child probably 7 or 8 screaming and crying and ready to run to find his parents........I looked at this kid and yelled STOP.....do not run.....stay still and your parents will find you....if he had continued running he would of been in a different area of the luggage return.....so sure enough ....here comes his mom and I did tell her that I made him not run ......he needed to be told to stay in one place if he got lost again.....almost like our training when we are out in the woods.......hope your kids never get scared like this little one did

Good tip Marie. Kids naturally run I think. I hope that parent thanked you for taking care of her kid.

here comes his mom and I did tell her that I made him not run ......he needed to be told to stay in one place if he got lost again.....

While I am sure the mom appreciated your assistance with her child, I, for one, would have found your parenting "advice" unwelcome and intrusive. What makes you think that this mother had not already taught her child to stay put, but for whatever reason (like kids will be kids...), he chose not to obey that day?

pumba-That is great advice and I don't think that I have ever mentioned that to my children. I'll have to make sure to do that. Thanks!

I TOLD THE KID NOT TO RUN......and I TOLD THE MOM THAT I TOLD HIM NOT TO RUN.......BUT I DID NOT TELL HER TO TELL HIM.........BUT IT WOULD OF BEEN A GOOD IDEA FOR HER TO TELL HER SON AT SOME POINT ESPECIALLY BEING IN THE LAND OF KIDS
AND I HOPE SHE DID..........END OF MY STORY

This is excellent advice, Marie. I think when kids can't find their parents in unfamiliar territory they tend to panic and running is a reaction to that panic.

Some kids are overconfident.
My nephew got separated at security line, went ahead and got on train at Orlando airport and rode it by himself.
His mom was finally able to get security to grab him at the other end and hold him 'till she got there. He was 3.5, traveled extensively and knew where to go!

Welcome to the DIS, Wish I lived in Fl!

YIKES! He was 3.5??? Holy cow, I would have been one panicked mother.

That's good advice and I need to teach my children this as well. I have an overconfident 8 year old that could use this lesson! My 6 year old will still hold my hand.

Wow, 3.5 and off on their own. That would be frightening!! However, looking back I could have seen my oldest (now the 8 year old) pulling something like that!

That's good advice. My baby can't even walk yet, but I'll definitely remember to teach him that when he's old enough.

If I were that mother, I would have appreciated the advice. Even if she had taught him not to run before, he obviously didn't remember it when he panicked, and he needed to be taught again. Fortunately, since you taught him when his adrenaline was up, it's a lesson he'll probably never forget now.

THAT has got to be one of the scariest feelings--for parents and kids!! I'm a little obsessive about DS8 being with me in crowded places. He gets embarassed when I want him to hold my hand. I'm not as crazy about it in familiar surroundings (like the local Walmart). I don't make him hold my hand then!!!! But if we're at an airport or anywhere the crowds "keep moving", I keep him right with me. Thanks for the reminder!!

I have trained mine! And feel free to stop him from running
anytime!!! good job!

Sometimes you have to tell them over and over again to reinforce the message. (and they still don't get it). I hope that Mom took that opportunity to tell him the consequences of his actions.(without scaring him too much.......even though sometimes they need to be a little scared)

Good advice - while we were at AK in Jan a 6 yr old was separated from her mother in Dinoland. (Mom was tending to two babies in the stroller, turned around & DD was gone.) The CMs told Mom to stay put in case DD came back. A bit later CMs were radioed that the child had been located in the Rainforest Cafe Gift Shop:earseek: That child had left the park without her mother.

thats a great tip!

We taught our son to od that and once he was lost in TDS he stood rooted to one spot and yelled MOMM MOM MOOOOOM until I found him LOL>

OMG I would have freaked out if that had happened to me.
