Trading Pins with CM's??

i understand completely.. but my kids don't only go for expensive pins, they go for what catches their eye. i know many people who don't trade, just buy the pins they LOVE  but i'm still all for 'cheap pins' cause it can be a very expensive addic... oops, i mean hobby.
p.s. what's sedesma? i've seen that on ebay and wasn't sure.

Remember that when you trade a pin to a CM, that's a pin that is up for trade to another park guest just like yourself. You aren't just trading to a CM, you are effectively trading to other guests, by proxy. It's not about "just trading for expensive pins." It's that cheap-o pins take quality pins (VERY different thing from expensive pins) out of the trading pool, and it's really disheartening for a lot of pin traders to go up to CMs all day seeing nothing but poorly made pins. I've trade cast lanyard pins to CMs for rack pins that I hadn't seen before and really caught my eye.

Getting quality pins does NOT have to be expensive. You can get quality Disney made pins (ie not Sedesma (company out of spain) and not Propin) for as little as $2.00 each if you give it a little patience on eBay. There's a person on the dizpins boards that regularly sells quality pins in both large and small quantities for $2.25 per pin.

Pin Trading is a wonderful tradition in the parks. It's up to us as guests to keep it fun for everyone involved - not just ourselves, but other guests and the CMs too! Granted, while some of them don't care, a lot of the CMs do pin trading because they love it too, and it's disheartening for them as well to have a lanyard full of Sedesmas and Propins that just aren't up to the usual Disney standard of quality.

But yeah, if people ultimately decide to keep with the really cheap-o pins, I udnerstand the reasoning, but it's really not that much more to go with quality Disney pins with a little patience and searching. There's my plea! ;)

Ditto! Right on! Exactly!

You can also get decent priced pin sets from the disney store online when they have sales! And if you frequent disneyshopping.com, you will see that they often have free shipping and other special savings. I must agree that it is a very addicting and pricy hobby though- but soooo much fun!

Of course it is...how do you suppose I found my DL Cast Member pin of Chip & Dale buried in cotton candy at WDW?! What a find!

The Sedesma and ProPins are official Disney. They are made in Spain and Germany and are out of some type of very soft metal. The back of the pins break off easily and the colors just don't seem quite as bright as the ones from the US and UK. You will notice a difference as soon as you seen them.

If anyone would like to know the name of the ebay store I found that sells official pins for $5.95 a pin with no S&H let me know....he also has quite a few Cast Lanyard pins for the same price! Yep, this store gets part of my paycheck every couple of weeks...for pins I wind up giving away!

So would pins from EuroDisney probably be Sedesma or ProPins? I bought some pins on Ebay for traders and a number of them are EuroDisney pins. I looked at them last night (after reading this thread) and they don't appear to be cheaply made. A couple of them were actually cool enough I put them in my collection.

Not thru ebay, ordered thru disneyshopping this morning when you were still able to stack the codes...

You can trade any disney pins at DL, WDW, or DLP. There is no pin trading on property at DL Tokyo though, and I am not sure what the Hong Kong situation is either. They do sell pins at the parks, but I guess people were too mental for them to have trading(or something) We got some great pins at DLP; we were there for our honeymoon, and it coincided with the 12th Anniversary of the park. We've also made awesome trades at DL...There are also plenty of great quality non-sedesma/propins type pins from DLP, but they don't usually end up on CM lanyards at WDW....but you never know!

what codes?? what did i miss about the codes

There's not really a place (in AK, or any park for that matter) that's better or worse for trading. Cast members with lanyards are all over the place, and what may be up for trade on the lanyard changes constantly.

Just a few things I've noticed as a castmember
1. Please ASK before looking at a CM's pins. I've had some guests come up and just grab my lanyard ... umm ... there IS a body attached to that lanyard you're tugging on. Also, it can be a bit unnerving to have somebody just come up to you and stare at your chest

2. I can only trade pins that are on the lanyard. I've been asked to trade my nametag, I've been asked to trade my 1 year pin, and I've been asked to trade my "Trainer" pin, none of which are on the lanyard, and all of which I'm NOT ALLOWED to trade.

3. Even if there's nothing interesting on the lanyard, please thank the CM, don't just walk away without saying anything.

4. If a CM is obviously busy dealing with something, that is probably not the best time to ask them to look at their pins.

THANKS FOR THE MANNERS LESSON FOR PIN TRADING.... A LOT OF US NEED THAT REMINDER THAT EVEN THOUGH YOU WORK AT THE HAPPY PLACE YOU ARE STILL HUMAN. THANKS FOR BEING A CM AND MAKING OUR TRIPS SO WONDERFUL!!!!!!

Yoiks! Just checked my favorite ebay store...and the store has gone from over 1000 pins to 12! I wonder what happened!

Don't forget Brian and Freddy the Frog at AK! He trades mini pins which are all over Freddy! (not a real frog...but a cute stuffed one!) Just ask at a gift shop...everyone knows who Brian and Freddy are!

Those are good points. I hated in when people would grab my lanyard. But I also hated it when people did not say thank you. But for the most part, it was fun trading pins with people. The kids (and adults, too) all seemed to love it.

My DD9 likes to trade pins...my DD12 just likes to collect them. I bought some off of ebay to use as traders. DD9 was looking for Stitch pins and got quite a few. Disney sells locking pin backs so you don't have to worry about your pins falling off.
