Trading into DVC

I am looking for tips and help on how to do this. I am pretty much in the dark as to how timeshare trading works. My parents own six weeks (two of which are 2 bedroom, and the other four are 1 bedroom units) in various timeshares. I am positive at least 3 of those weeks are for highly sought locations. And they are always talking about something called a 'lock out' which gives them extra time or something...

They bank/trade with two groups. RCI and Interval (sp?)

They have offered us a week, and wanted to know where we want it. We have been looking and looking and nothing was working for us. Either not somewhere we can see spending a week or too expensive to fly to. Plus we really just wnt to go back to WDW...

I never really thought about trying to get a DVC unit in trade.

So who can tell me the best way to go about this. I don't know a thing about timeshares, really.

My parents own Marriot in Hawaii, Laguna Inn (or something like that, very hard to book even as an owner, in California), Lake Havisu (sp?) which they are going to sell off soon, one in Vegas, and an Embassy Suites (I think that one is also Hawaii too), and one other I can't think of.

My heart is racing just thinking about it. Just last night DH said he thought we should delay WDW till after our trip to Greece because of the costs... but a free room would be impossible for him to say no to! :teeth:

Getting a studio or 1 BR during Jan, early Feb, May, Sept, Oct and early Dec is not that difficult. There are units sitting there right now for the fall that fit those characteristics. Getting other times or a 2 BR is tough. DVC works with II (Interval International) and you could either keep looking online or put in an ongoing request to do so or both. I know the Marriott and Embassy's work with II. I'm not sure about Laguna Inn but Laguna Surf and Laguna Shores both trade with both RCI & II. If you want to post or contact me with more specifics I may be able to offer further suggestions that would help you out. Or you could call me if you'd like, email and I can give you the number.

Try and post it on the rent/ trade boards on this website. I would think that would work for you.

I thought that board was for rent/trade posts only and not questions. I think I have enough info from Dean (thanks Dean). And it is the Laguna Surf they have. It is the neatest place, if you ever get a chance to stay.

I will see if my parents will give up one of the ones that can trade for a DVC unit. Maybe I should have the grandkids ask :teeth:

I think she meant if you can't get what you want (either time, resort, or size) doing a trade through II, then you could try to do a private swap with someone here that owns.

I think a trade on the rent/trade board is the best way to go. It costs you nothing as long as both parties can agree on the swap. And you would know within hours (on weekdays) if the unit was available.

I know if I were looking for a swap to Hawaii, I would post on the board and work it out that way instead of II or RCI.

are you trying with a week already deposited?

You need to use only II...

those are pretty great traders you should find something....

Yes, my parents had to bank everything last year due to health issues. This year they may not be able to use the Hawaii timeshares because my Dad really should not take long flights yet. So I need to use II, I think. I also don't think my Mom could handle working out a private trade (although that seems like a better deal since they charge you to bank weeks).

How do the trades in II work? If you bank a week of a two bedroom unit do you have to trade for a two bedroom? If you can trade down, do you get anything more because your unit was larger? Or do you just take a loss to get the location you want? That might be a hard sell for my Mom. She does not understand the Disney thing at all.

Wow! Marriott in Hawaii--I'm jealous! Dean knows more about trading than anybody else on the Board, but I will try to answer your question until he logs back on.

You usually call and bank with Interval, but with that Marriott, you call them to get assigned a week to trade. DO NOT tell them you are trading, or they will give you a junk week that might not work for you. Then after you have a good week, call Interval to do a search--don't give them your week UNTIL they have found what you want, such as a week at a DVC. You want to trade even, like a two bedroom for a two bedroom. If you have a lot of time until you want to go, you can even hold out for a bigger unit, but that could be awhile. If you are willing to trade down, you will get a unit faster, but don't do that unless you want to go soon or during Easter week, or something. Marriott also has properties in Orlando that are near Disney, and lovely, so you might be able to trade one of the other timeshares for that.

What is it that Mom doesn't understand? Surely she has traded before??

she wants to use something that is already banked.....

get her membership information (her II number).

then you go search online for a DVC.

when you first sign up - the thing that shows up is the getaway - so just click on exchanges - her banked stuff should show up.

BCV, DBW, DVO, DSS, DWL are the dvc resorts

here is the site
http://www.intervalworld.com

but you need her membership number to do anything!!!

Tell me when you want to go and whether you can do with a 1 BR or studio or must have a 2 BR. No, you don't get extra trading for a smaller unit other than a slightly higher priority than you would have otherwise to get the exchange. Also see if you can get your parents online sign on for II, with their blessing of course. Then your best bet is likely to call me so we can walk through the computer and other info together. I'll be here tonight if you like, just PM me and I'll give you my number and we can work through all the issues together if you like.
