Trading in PHP ticket for AP

Can an adult's park hopper plus pass be traded in (and pay the differece) for a child's annual pass? No days have been used on the adult's pass yet. Thanks in advance!

I doubt it. I think you can only upgrade, and an adult pass to a child's AP isn't an upgrade. I think it could only be done from adult to adult. Of course, someone will correct me if I am wrong.

I've used leftover days from both adult and children's passes to "cash in" for other passes. Do not go to the "regular" windows that sell passes...they will tell you it cannot be done, it can only be done within "X" number of days of purchase, etc. You need to go to Guest Relations and tell them you want to use the cash value of the pass you have towards purchasing a new pass. In Jan., I used the value left on 1 adult 5dy PH and one child 5 dy PH (each had 2 days' admission left on them) to offset the cost of 1 adult AP and 1 child AP at Guest Relations at Epcot (way over to the right of the ticket booths, in a separate building). No problem! I've also done this (well, not for AP, for regular PH) at both MK (at the park, not the TTC) and AK (over to the left of the ticket booths) guest relations. In fact, the tix I traded in at MK were 3 day PHP that I had purchased thru a special deal from somewhere last fall, can't remember where, maybe Alamo? My DSis has even used the one day/one park admission from timeshare tours to offset the cost of AP's. Just make sure to go to Guest Relations, not the regular windows, and you should be fine. Of course, I don't know what will happen if the pass you have exceeds the cost of the new pass!

Yes it can. Guest Relations can do this for you.

Another question - about upgrading to Annual Pass. Does it matter if the hopper is purchased from a legit discount ticket broker? We are thinking of buying hoppers and if we enjoy the parks - upgrading to Annual Pass - but I am wondering if I have to buy the original hopper through Disney in order to do so?

we were there last week and wanted to up grade our 7 day hoppers for php, we had 5 days of park and 3 days of waterpark,
but we were told that we bought the passes in feb. 2003 and could not up grade the passes, we would have had to do it during the year we bought them and then the php wiould only have been good thru feb 2004. they said there was nothing they could do, and we even went to 2 different guest service and our resort front desk.

You were caught in a Disneyspeak catch-22. I'm assuming you wanted to upgrade to a PAP, not a php.

To Disney, upgrading a ticket means applying the entire thing to a new, higher ticket. This can only be done within the first seven days of use. Thus their declining to do it.

But after that (which was your situation), you can apply the dollar value of the unused major park admissions towards the purchase of a new, higher ticket. This is not an upgrade in Disneyspeak. It's an exchange where you use a credit to offset a purchase price.

Still, the CM's should have known what you wanted to do. It could not have been done at Guest Services or at your resort front desk as they do not sell AP's or PAP's there. It can only be done at Guest Relations.

The ticket can be purchased from anywhere. You will get credited for the full price you paid (assuming you follow all the rules regarding upgrading within the first 7 days of use) when you purchased it from Disney.

The drawback you will discover when you upgrade a ticket purchased from a ticket wholesaler is that you will only get credit for the wholesale price that Disney sold the ticket to the wholesaler. They will not credit you for the profit margin that the wholesaler added to the price and you paid.

Wow - Thank you for the info. That sure would've been an unpleasant surprise! If we are considering a trade in after a review of all the parks I guess we better pre-purchase via Disney. Thanks again - I never would've guessed that one!

GoldenOldie yes, your right PAP, i did go to guest relations out side of AK, and was told the same thing, only in the first year but they do make acceptions sometimes , not always and im my case the tickets would have been purchased in 2004 not 2003, and i do understand what you are saying a credit to be applied to the PAP. i was also asking about db tickets they were purchased in 1996 and all i wanted to know if they can use the tickets at AK, because AK was not open at the time the tickets were purchased, and the kids are older then then 10 now and i was told just have your brother use the tickets, they are good for AK and the over 10 kids can still use the passes.

Don't you know all you have to do is ask here to get the real story?

1996 was when the changeover to the magnetic strip ticket was started so you could have either the newer or the older ones. If the ticket has a magnetic strip on the back, it can be used as is at any theme park including AK. If it does not, it needs to be exchanged (no charge for this) at Guest Relations. They will give you back a current magnetic strip ticket with the same unused admissions as your old one had.

If your old one was for a child and the child is now well past 10, they will exchange the admissions still unused on the child's ticket for a comparable adult one on a one basis. Again, no charge for this but you will need to have the now-grown child with you when you do it.

If the child is only 11-12, don't even bother exchanging the ticket unless you have to due to the magnetic strip issue. Just use them up as is.

If the child is now well into their teens, you may want to save yourself any problems and just do the exchange before you use the ticket.

The dollar amount of what's left on your old ticket is based on what you actually paid for the ticket when you bought it.

The amount you will be charged for any new ticket will be based on the gate price of the particular ticket you are getting.

My daughter's 7 day PHP has all four plusses remaining. Can I upgrade the 2 park days left towards an AP, and keep the plusses for water parks? Or do I lose them altogether if I upgrade?
Also, If she will be 9 when we activate the AP, but turn 10 before our 2nd trip, are we ok, or do we need to trade in for an adult AP? I'm not trying to pull a fast one here, just want to follow protocol.

You can use the two remaining park days towards the AP. You cannot keep the unused plus options. They will be forfeited when you do the upgrade.

The age of the child when activating the AP is the deciding factor. If she is 9 when you activate the AP (or buy it at WDW), then that child AP will be good for the entire year. She will not have to exchange it for an adult AP after she turns 10. She can and should continue to use it all year. Then if you renew the AP next year, she would have to get the adult one.
