Trading in a DVC Contract

I noticed earlier this week that one site was offering the option to trade in your existing contract against certain contracts. This got me thinking, would Disney ever allow you to trade in an existing contract if you want to change home resort? Has anyone ever asked? I thought it worth checking on this board before I make a fool of myself with one of the DVC reps here in Florida. I’d love to trade in our AKL contract for one at RIV because we really like staying at the latter. It’s a hassle to sell our AKL contract though as we are international sellers and I don’t really want to have to deal with claiming back the withholding tax on the sale price.

I asked years ago and it was a no. There have been times where they did offer to buy one back but the price was well below market value, and in one case, they told owners they knew that was the case.

Thanks Sandisw. I wish I’d sold my AKL contract when prices were higher last year. That way the withholding wouldn’t have been such an issue.

I saw the same thing for the “trade in” deal. Does anyone know how this works?

If you are talking about the one with https://www.dvcresalemarket.com/, it is simply selling your contract and buying one they are offering via the trade option…not all contracts count.

What you will get for your contract will be less than what you might get trying to sell it outright and just buying the one you want.

I did see something a while back that DVD sent emails saying they were willing to purchase back contracts on select resorts. It was just a matter of selling them back the contract for $ and using the $ for another resort purchase, if that's what is wanted.

Interested members must contact DVC to receive a buy-back price on their specific contract. Offers are generally in the range of $80-100 per point, depending on the resort, size of the contract and status of points. These rates are lower than what can be obtained on the resale market. Disney Vacation Club is attempting to appeal to buyers who seek a quick return, without the need to engage a resale broker, attract buyers and pay broker commission. The website ********** has details on recent resale transfer prices for all resorts.

DVC can then sell the re-acquired points to new owners. Direct sale prices are currently $186 per point for Animal Kingdom, $170 for Old Key West and $165 for Saratoga Springs. In the case of Old Key West, contracts repurchased with a 2042 ending date can be merged with the 15 added years and sold by DVC with the 2057 end date.

It's like "trading in" a car in the sense you buy one deed and sell the other deed -- just like they don't modify the car deed to show a different car. No, they can't alter the deeds.

Disney would be thrilled to sell you points at sold out prices, but they aren't buying anything at all right now. They have plenty of points.

Hmm, I certainly didn’t get that email. I’ll give them a call this week. Maybe they would like my Animal Kingdom points as they don’t seem to have many of those 🤣. On a serious note, I’ll report back what they have to say when I speak to them.

Thanks for the post. I have a co-worker whose sister-in-law "swapped" AUL for VDH and I was like huh? How did she do that?

Unfortunately this co-worker doesn't know much about DVC and only said - She swapped but didn't get any many points as before because VDH is more expensive.

That’s interesting. I was given a number to call by my guide, but haven’t got around to it yet. I imagine the price point they will offer to buy back at will be pretty low, but I’ll give them a call and find out once the new incentives are released at the end of the month (the current ones aren’t tempting enough!).

Pretty sure they will give you the "instant price quote" and apply it to a "trade eligible" contract.
