Looking through the new member guidebook, it hit me!

DVC members can often stay in a 1-BR at a timeshare that we can trade for during peak time for less points than most weeks at DVC in a 1-BR.

Am I missing something here, or is staying at another time-share resort actually cost effective?

DVC are better than most other timeshares.

If you can get a Marriott or a Hyatt where you want to go - you will probably be happy.

but go read some of the posters on this site - they were very unhappy with their exchanges.

I loved the Marriott's Grand Ocean at HH - a lovely resort - this only has 2bedrooms - so I am not certain if you can exchange a 1-bedroom for it?

Plus lots of member - like me - don't want to stay an entire week.

I use my DVC Sun-fri - leaving fri morning - so I don't pay the extra points needed for a weekend. lots of members do it this way.

I take Saturday to pack and drive - arrive Sun morning and check in immediately - sometime I have a room ready - if not explore the resorts or DD.

It depends, I suppose. Is your goal "biggest bang for your DVC points?" or "least expensive route to a specific reservation"?

There may be less costly methods for booking the same week offered as a DVC exchange. However, it may not be reasonable for you to own and manage a collection of timeshare/vacation club properties, deal with exchange company memberships, monitor rental rates, etc. Factor in resources such as time, level of understanding, desire for bargain hunting, etc. .... and perhaps you'll find that using DVC is a "best fit" for you and your family at this time.

We have found it to be more cost effective to rent a week from an owner of a timeshare we wish to visit. If we need the money to pay for the rent we just rent our DVC points to pay for it. We usually can get more $$ for our Disney points than the cost of a trade. For instance we stayed in the Hyatt Hycienda del Mar in Puerto Rico. We rented a week from an owner for $1000. We then turned around and rented our points for $1500 giving us a profit of $500 to spend in PR. The resort was lovely and the owner and I were both happy.
