It depends, I suppose. Is your goal "biggest bang for your DVC points?" or "least expensive route to a specific reservation"?
There may be less costly methods for booking the same week offered as a DVC exchange. However, it may not be reasonable for you to own and manage a collection of timeshare/vacation club properties, deal with exchange company memberships, monitor rental rates, etc. Factor in resources such as time, level of understanding, desire for bargain hunting, etc. .... and perhaps you'll find that using DVC is a "best fit" for you and your family at this time.
We have found it to be more cost effective to rent a week from an owner of a timeshare we wish to visit. If we need the money to pay for the rent we just rent our DVC points to pay for it. We usually can get more $$ for our Disney points than the cost of a trade. For instance we stayed in the Hyatt Hycienda del Mar in Puerto Rico. We rented a week from an owner for $1000. We then turned around and rented our points for $1500 giving us a profit of $500 to spend in PR. The resort was lovely and the owner and I were both happy.
