A question to the very knowledgable people on this board. My wife and I bought in to BCV last year. We took advantage of the magical beginning promotion and purchased 150 points. Last year we stayed at both BCV and OKW. And, we are going in May and doing the same.

We love BCV. Our kids are still young (10 and 13) and love Stormalong Bay. But, my wife and I prefer the spaciousness and serenity of OKW.

In the future, we would be interested in trading our BCV points for OKW. A few questions:

1) How would we do this - I would suppose we would have to go through an agent to sell and then buy points? Or, would WDW assist in this transaction if I found a willing partner?

2) If I did that today I would expect to walk away with more OKW points due to the resale prices I am seeing (76 to 77 for BCV and 68 to 72 for OKW). Is that an accurate assessment?

3) Does anyone see the resale price of OKW increasing (relative to BCV) as a result of the new slide?

I am not at a point where I can buy add-on points at OKW, but, may be in the future.

Any thoughts and/or recommendations?

Thanks all in advance.

You are right that since what we own is actual real estate (not points), you can't just swap. You must sell your contract and purchase a new one. This has to be done with an outside agent. Disney might exercise their right of first refusal but beyond that are not involved in resales.

I don't think the slide will have much effect on OKW's price. The increase in DVC points from Disney may have a cause a slight increase on the resale market but that would be for both OKW and BCV.

I wouldn't jump too quickly to sell since you will probably end up losing some money once closing costs are factored in. I would see how you make out booking OKW with your BCV points. The system is designed to allow for this type flexibility without having to own at every resort where one would like to stay.

If you truly believe OKW is the place to own instead of BCV and find yourself using BCV points for OKW stays than based on past performance, you should own at OKW due to the lower maintenance fees and lower point requirements. The lower mtce fees might change in the future but the lower overall point requirements will not

Just my advice if you find yourself using BCV points consistently for OKW stays - in the long run (i.e. to 2042), it would make sense to own OKW

Disney will not assist with the transaction. You will have to sell, through a timeshare broker, your BCV contract and then buy an OKW contract. From what I have read from others with experience at this, you end up losing money due to purchasing the new contract at a possibly higher cost than the orginal contract and the additional closing costs. Although the selling price of BCV pts is greater than OKW, with only 150 pts this will only net you a little over the closing costs on the new OKW contract.
I have read posts from someone else who would like to sell VWL for OKW, and I can not for the life of me understand it. Both VWL and BCV demand a higher resale price, have more trading value, have far fewer resales and are much harder to get into than OKW. AND it is not like it is very difficult to get a reservation at OKW, barring GVs at certain times of the yr. Why would you want to trade down in value? You can stay wherever you want and yet still have something that most likely will always have a higher resale value--if the day ever comes that you wish to sell. The difference in dues for 150 pts is so small it is not really significant and also dues fluctuate. OKW has had the highest % increase in dues for the past 2 years and with the new slide and pool enhancement, I would not be surprised to see this continue for awhile.
I don't know, maybe because I own at the DVC resort that I love the most, I just don't understand it. But given the ease of booking at OKW and the very little difference in dues savings per year, I would never in a million years get rid of a contract that had a higher resale/trade etc value for a lower one. That would like trading in a CD for another one that yields a lower interest rate, imo.

There was a very good reason I posted this here! I knew that very smart DVC folks would help me think my impulse through and frame the argument for me!

Originally my thought process was: Why pay the higher maintenance fees at BCV if we have no long term plans of stahing there?

My wife and I will consider all of this information. Based on your input my thought process is now:

1) Stay with the more desireable property.
2) If possible add points at OKW (or SS - or a new property in the future).

Thanks all for your very concise input.

You are more than welcome for any info or input. Good luck with your DVC contracts, wherever they may be!

As you know the DVC program is very flexible. Frankly, I do not understand why someone would want to incur the expense of using a broker to sell one resort to buy another with the same company--to save maintence fees?

Keep in mind as DVC adds members they are also adding resorts. The only down side I could see is not planning a vacation far enough in advance to obtain the accomodations you may want, in which case you would have to compromise.

Thus far I have not had any problem booking reservations at the seven month window. Also, the waitlist usually comes thru, when we were booking less than severn months.

I do not see any advantages to this transaction and you may eventually tire of OKW resort and want to stay at the others. My favorite resort is BWV & BCV; however, as a change of pace I enjoy staying at the other resorts.

Good luck in deciding your course of action and enjoy DVC!

I own a small contract at Hilton Head 100points that I wish I hadn't bought because I don't use it. Every year I have to wait to use those points until 7 month window and its a pain but not worth trying to sell and rebuy more BW. BW and BCV are probably the hardest to book at the 7month window for certain times of the year. OKW is almost always available thank god. We usually end up staying there on spare of the moment trips and the resort in my opinion is not a lower value just a different one. I find by usung the rent trade board and the waitlist I usually can get what I want (BWV ALL THE TIME). Because Old Key West is so large you shouldn't have that much trouble booking a stay there wuth a little flexibility and I'm sure you could book a room at BCV at the 11month window for your vacation and then trade with someone wanting that limited supply of rooms for OKW. Don't waste your time and money selling.

Just wanted to post that I had to change my vacation plans last month and could not get into my home resort, OKW because it was full, and ended up having to stay at BWV (Boardwalk view) instead.
Yes it was nice, no complaints at all and very enjoyable but do I want to stay there again? No.

Obviously because it is bigger, you are more likely to be able to get into OKW, but it isn't always so.

Just needed to get that off my chest. Hope you understand. :)

Thanks for the input. What I have learned from this post (and others) is this: BCV is hot. Both my wife and I are happier at OKW, but, there is no reason to sell or trade unless I get one hell of a deal.

Perhaps 225 points or so for our 150. If that came along on a straight up deal (which I doubt), then, we might seriously consider.

Based on this post the current goal is to buy add-ons at OKW in the future, then, maybe rent out our BCV points in the future.

Thanks.
