Part One: The Room
The first part of out trip was spent in 2-bedroom Savanna-View Villa at AKV. We were treating my parents as a 40th anniversary gift.
This was our first time in a DVC unit larger than a studio. We had a lock-off, and my parents used the studio portion for privacy - so we used it more like a 1-bedroom with a connecting studio than as a 2-bedroom.
The day before, we drove into Orlando and stayed offsite at the Holiday Inn Maingate East - right next to Celebration and 2.5 miles from Disney. I had pricelined the room for 40$
The hotel was surprisingly nice - with free internet, a theater for kids, extensive food court, nice dining, very clean and well-appointed rooms with comfortable beds. We'll definately do it again for our arrival day.
On check-in day, we were at AKL by 8am. I was really anxious about getting a room on the Arusha savanna. This trip was a big gift to my parents, and my dad had surgery just two weeks prior to the trip and I knew he'd probably spend a lot of time in the room. I did not want him to have the current construction and mud view of the sunset savanna.
Our room was not ready, so we went into AK and hung out until my parents arrived.
At noon, my parents arrived and I called to check on the room. It was ready and it was on Arusha!!
We had a great view - right in front of the feeding area (my dad ended up spending the second day of the trip resting at the lodge and it could not have been more perfect!)

Impressions of the two bedroom:
The AKV rooms are just beautiful. In terms of decor/furnishings - they are really on a different level than other DVCs. The original African Art pieces and carved furniture are stunning, and materials seem very sturdy.
While storage is limited in the studio, there's plenty of storage space in a 1-bedroom.
Yes, it's dark. I can see how this would be an issue for some people, but I like the low lighting.
As an AKV owner, I have some concern with the fold-out chair. It has to be moved to open and the bottom scrapes the carpet. This is going to cause the carpet to get nasty around the chair very quickly. I hope they realize they need to put smooth casters on the chair legs ASAP.
The balcony is HUGE.
Our room was in great shape with the exception of the glass sliding doors that had lots of fingerprints - since the whole point of a savanna view room is to view the savanna, it would have been nice to have clean glass doors but then again, my own kids finger-printed them within an hour after I wiped them. In the future I need to remember to pack windex wipes when I stay at AKV so I can keep my glass doors clear!!!
