Toys for the plane?

We just came back and for the second time my ds favorite thing was a slinky. It was the small plastic one in the box-he pulled it out-put it in put it on his arm,his stuffed animals arm on the tray table-over and over! I had brought it the last time we went when he was 2 and he loved it that time too.I put it away and he hadn't seen it since and again at almost 4 he loved it.He also played with his leappad that I got a new game for but that only lasted alittle while, then we did snacks and slinky.

OMG love the slinky idea!

one thing to watch out for is rolling crayons and small cars that go off tray table. can become a game of pickup or major meltdown over lost favorite car. be there done both.

The only thing we will be taking on the plane is a second hand Nintendo DS Lite bought from a local game store for £40. My DD loves it, she has only one game for it (a Hello Kitty game) so we have bought some second hand games to give her on the flight (all of them were under £5, stuff like Cooking Mama, Dora games, Disney games etc sold without their boxes) she has had it since just after she turned 3. She has already dropped and broken a family members iPad so we feel this is much better for her and not such an issue if it gets damaged.

Here's what works for us! (DD is 3 and has traveled quite a bit on planes):

- iPad with movies, definitely
- Stickers/sticker book - the "Dover Little Activity books" are AWESOME and disposable
- Coloring book or pages with triangular crayons
- The slinky suggestion is a great one - we get mini ones from Target and she loves them!
- We also love "Buckles" as she calls him. He specifically stays put away for travel only:

And more important than toys - finger food snacks :)

Our biggest go-to is the iPad. Our flight to Disney World is only a little over an hour, so we don't have to keep him occupied for too long. He has a ton of games he plays on there with puzzles, color & shape recognition, flash cards, etc. Plus we always load it up with Disney movies and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episodes if he just wants to watch something. I figure we are going to be in Disney World for a week and he won't be watching much, if any, TV the whole week so a couple hours on the plane won't hurt if it keeps him quiet.

Other things we have brought were a small Magna Doodle, coloring books with triangle crayons (he really liked this because I or DH could color with him), sticker books, and regular books to look at. Also, some kid friendly "I Spy" type books go a long way. They make quite a few with Disney characters as well.

DS has always been a pretty good flyer, we have only had a few instances of him making any kind of disturbance. Recently our biggest problem has been that when he is in his car seat his feet stick straight out because his legs were not long enough to hang down and that resulted in him pushing on the seat in front of him sometimes, especially when the person in front of him reclines their seat and it aggravates DS. After one instance where he had fallen asleep at takeoff and we thought he might sleep for most of the flight until the person behind him got up by pulling on his seat and waking him, we now opt to be in the last row of the plane whenever possible. The engine noise drowns out enough that he will usually nap and there is no one behind him to pull on his seat!

Good point! :thumbsup2

I can't wait to introduce DS to a slinky...I totally forgot about these until this post! :cool1: I looked at Buckles and love him! My fear--DS will figure it all out and then know how to get out of his high chair, car seat and other safety seats...No good... :headache:

Don't spend a lot for the slinky!! My kids are grown and we STILL get them messed up!

DD hasn't carried over that skill :) She can put buckles together, but she has never been able to figure out how to undo the more difficult car seat, and she's 3. His buckles are pretty easy to do, unlike the safety stuff. The only downside about him honestly is his cost!

I would fear he might carry over the skill...LOL
I didn't think his cost was too bad considering it is something we would use over and over...and probably over again...:rotfl2:
