Tower of Terror question from my son

I was reading the story of TofT to my 5.5yo son, and looking at photos from the ride online, and he wanted to know how the ghost family died. He knows it isn't real, but he likes to know the story behind the rides. So I figured someone here must know the answer! Thanks!

According to the movie, the ghosts didn't die, they were trapped there by Sally's little sister who was jealous of her. When Sally's sister was an old lady, she found out that Sally was planning a birthday party for her, and the "spell" was reversed, and the ghosts were freed.

The movie is the same name, ToT, it has Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst in it. It's not that scary, so you could rent it for him. It's kind of like that good, cheesy Disney movie.

The guests were riding the elevator when the hotel was struck by lightening. The elevator then plunged into the twilight zone.

Hi NancyD... I got the impression that it was lightning that did it. I could be wrong, though!

DS won't ride it b/c of the apparent lightning hitting the occupants of the elevator, b/c we turned blue then turned into skeletons and disappeared... He loved the up and down part, and KNOWS that we're all still alive, but he just refuses to ride it still! Rode it when he was 4, now he's just about 7 (can you believe it?), and will not set foot even into the line b/c of that effect...

We may watch the movie one day, good to know that it isn't that scary.

We will definitely watch the pre-show video! I didn't even think of YouTube! Which is weird, because we have watched a thousand ridethroughs on there!

Molly, I can hardly believe how old our kids are! Seems like yesterday they were crawling around in brightly colored diapers! I think *I* am more afraid of riding Tower of Terror than either of my kids! Well no, my 7yo wouldn't ride it for anything. But we were looking at DLR photos online and I pointed out Tower of Terror, and DS started asking a billion questions, and I couldn't answer them!

FYI my DD is now 11 and now loves ToT. But when she was younger (as young as 5-6) there were several times when we would make it all the way onto the ride and she would change her mind.

The very first time she rode it (in WDW) She was probably turned 5. I had told her everything (I thought) about the ride. I neglected to tell her that her bottom would come off the seat! She refused to ride it for a few more years after that. Now she says it's her favorite DCA ride.

She went through a similar thing with Haunted Mansion. Rode it with my DNiece and was fine. Next time we rode it she backed out at the last minute (just as we were boarding Doom buggy). We exited through the last minute exit. Took her awhile to agree to ride it. Still not one of her favs. though she's already excited about doing it at WDW with all the new stuff.

This has happened with both of my kids. We rode Haunted Mansion about 5 times, including several back to back rides. Then the next day they refused to ride it. Since then they have refused. I got DS to go on the WDW one with me in December, though right as we were walking into the building he said "Mommy, I changed my mind. Let's get out of here." I urged him forward, maybe I picked him up? 5 seconds later he was fine. Now he says he was just kidding about changing his mind yeah right! DD tried to do the last minute back out on Peter Pan. I was mean, though, and made her ride. Now she says it is one of her favorite rides.

I could see us just going through the pre-ride of T of T, just to see all of the props and setup. But I'll be the one chickening out and leaving before the ride begins!

According to the movie, Sally's older sister cast a magic spell that caused the lightening to strike and hold them captive.

So, it's both the spell and the lightening.

when i was younger i LOVED the movie! I highly suggest watching it...it's actually not that bad!
