Tower of Terror 10 Miler 2014

I did not get a race time submitted in time and from the rundisney website I assume I will be in the last corral.

Question for anyone that has run with this new corral setup for 2014....

I run a 10m a little under 1:30. Will it be really difficult being in the last corral to run for the first couple of miles till it clears up a little. Or does the new corral setup space people out a little more.

Thanks!

I may be wrong but I think I read somewhere waivers would be emailed 2 weeks before,I know that's not normal but I think I read it somewhere and don't remember where.Normally I believe it's about a month out which is where we're at right now, hopefully the sooner the better.

I read that too. I saw it on the RunDisney's website.

Waivers
•Waivers will be available for download 2 weeks prior to the event.
•You must have your signed waiver and a Photo ID with you to pick up your race packet.
•A parent or legal guardian must complete and sign the waiver for any participant under 18 years old. No exceptions will be made.

Last years ToT it was about a month out as was this past 1/2 marathon for the marathon weekend.

I know that the first choke point will be the cloverleaf getting onto Osceola Parkway at the first mile. Then it opens up to 2 lanes with 1/2 lane paved shoulder on each side of the road until you loop back and get to ESPN I believe at mile 5. Some places it will open to 3 lanes wide during these 4 miles.

The next choke point will be the dirt trail getting into the ESPN complex. IMO it was not well lit and a lot of walking in this spot. There is also places not as wide in the complex so you may have to do some zig zagging while in there until you get back to the asphalt again. Then you are back to 2 lane road until you get back to the original cloverleaf and then in the park.

Thanks SunDial,

Sounds like it won't be to tough. I am not going to try an fly.. Just wanted to keep it under 1:30 and meet up with some friends at the finish that did what they were suppose to do and submitted times unlike myself.. :)

This is one of those things that falls into the "Know thyself" category - some folks really can tour all day and run the race just fine. I am not one of those folks - I always arrive at WDW on race day, so I check into my hotel, then head to WWOS for packet pick-up and lunch. And then I chill - in my room if it's available, or somewhere cool where I can sit and read otherwise. I really need the time off my feet before a race, and especially before a night race.

Thx for your thoughts on this, PrincessV! :thumbsup2 I've re-thought my plan and will save Epcot for a post-race day. I'll hit DHS for half a day on my Friday arrival day, and then on race day head to the Expo first thing, then DTD for some lunch, and then back to the resort to rest up a bit, especially as you said it's a night race.

TOT in 2013 had a high of 89 with a low of 72 during early October which still has high humidity as its the tail end of the hot humid months. Early October is guaranteed hot.

it's hot all day and all night, so surfaces like, say, the roads, never cool down much. start temp for TOT was hovering around 80. HUGE difference! The upside is no sun in the mix. Drink up, slow down, stay safe, though, and TOT will be fine :thumbsup2

Thx a mint DOOM1001 & PrincessV for the info & insights - this really helps in setting expectations and ensuring I take it easy even with my turtle pace. :thumbsup2

They are a little busy with Disneyland half. I imagine we will see our race packets this week or next.

Lucky you - congrats! :cheer2:

Many of us will be arriving 30 days from now...are you feeling excited yet?!? :dance3:

cheers,
:goodvibes

Do you guys think I'll be ok? I've worked up to long runs of 12 miles the last few weeks and will get two more 12 mile runs in this weekend and next. I'm pretty sure I'll be alright but having to mess with my training this late in the game makes me nervous :confused3
More than okay! I don't even go up past 9 -11 miles in training for TOT and I've always been fine. No worries!

I totally agree with SunDial...

Your best bet is to start at the front of your corral and put some distance between you and the pack. You should have plenty of room to crank it out on the highway stretches, but things get bogged down on the cloverleaf and, moreso, in the twists, turns and narrow paths of WWOS.

Sounds like a perfect race day to me! :thumbsup2

Now that I've been running lately in 80 degree weather with 70-80's% humidity, I have decided I will be checking a bag for the race. I've never checked a bag before, but after my runs I have been drenched from head to toe. The bags are clear, but do they mind if I have a bag inside that. I don't want people seeing my undergarments in the bag.

Just recently been told I have a stress fracture in my right ankle... I'm so very disappointed in this news and upset I can't run for 4 more weeks. I was told I could run/walk the race, is anyone here in a similar situation. Something I have been training for, along with another race a few weeks later, and this news couldn't come at a worse time... I can't run :(

Sorry to hear about your injury. I am not currently in the same situation but many people will be run/walking the race so you will fit in. You just need to change your expectations for the race (depending on what they were). If I were you I would just go down with the idea of finishing and taking it easy and enjoying the race. I wouldn't worry about speed and making the injury worse, or reinjuring the ankle if it healed by then.

I am getting excited. My Magical Express vouchers came last week. That was a sign it was getting close. I won't truly allow myself to get excited until the plane is in the air because the "wife" could still change her mind again so I am holding off on really being excited for now. It may get harder once the magic band arrives. :thumbsup2

I am super excited!! This is my first Disney Race. We are running it with friends that have done a few. Both of our wait list came through so we are Staying at the Boardwalk Inn! Looking forward to walking over to the race. Hope to see some of other Disboard folks!
This may have been mentioned in the thread already.. We should come up with some kind of way to recognize other Disboard runners.

:rotfl2::lmao::rotfl2::lmao::rotfl2:

I am ready for this years redo of this run. Last years training was not as good as it needed to be and stopped at this point in time because of parent health issues. It is time to have a lot of fun with this years run. A couple of friends are also running with me. We will see where we are for the 2015 Goofy too.

Add another injury to the list. Just got diagnosed with hip bursitis by my doctor and the physical therapists where I work. Nine months of training down the drain. They told me that I could run the race if I absolutely wanted to but it probably would not be the best idea. I'm now toying with the idea of running/walking the race; doing half and half. If not, I'll have to defer to next year. I'm conflicted on what to do. I probably could run/walk the race but I'm so worried about getting swept.
I'm disappointed and angry and confused all at the same time. This bites!

My suggestion would be to go out sometime this week or weekend and just do say 3 miles walking. See what your time is per mile and how you hold up. If you are under 16 min then no worries! Or you could do what I do - run a mile, walk 1-2 min, repeat. If the dr thinks its an option and you are ok on time you could do it and just make sure you take it easy.

You could put one of those mesh packing cubes inside of it; I have black ones and you can't really see what's in there.

That said, all it says is the following:

gEAR Bag Check is available for The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ 10 –Miler.

A clear plastic bag will be issued to you at Packet Pick-Up to be used for gEAR Bag Check service. No other bag will be accepted.
A numbered bag check sticker will be given to you at Packet Pick-Up. Place the sticker in the clearly defined area on your clear plastic bag prior to arriving at gEAR Bag Check.
At race completion, your race number will be used to verify your bag when you pick it up.
Valuable items should not be checked.
The Event Staff is not responsible for any lost, damaged, or stolen items.

Nothing about no bags inside of it.

FWIW after finishing the DL Half, I was talking with a woman about all the kt tape she had on her leg. She was running WITH a stress fracture, and she said the tape was done in such a way that it really helped. She had finished, so it obviously helped enough!

She said that the tape is like magic.

Because the runDisney issued clear bag rule is a safety/security measure I wouldn't count on them allowing you to put a packed bag inside the clear bag. My plan is to roll my... ahem...unmentionables...into my other clothes/towel/etc so they aren't hanging out for anyone to see! That might save you the trouble of dumping your bag out and repacking it at bag check that night!

In recent rD races, they did allow us to pack a bag within the plastic bag, but nothing in it; all items had to be loose in the gear check bag. Just roll up your undies in whatever clothes you'll bring to change into. :thumbsup2

I'm so sorry. Sending good thoughts for a speedy recovery.

Here's the thing with run/walk - if you haven't been doing any walking up to this point, some muscles will be in for a rude awakening if you all of a sudden make them walk 10 miles. Running and walking use muscles in very different ways. I'd been run/walking to train for my first TOT in 2012, but wound up walking most of the race due to ITBS - way more walking than I was used to... it killed my hips. I finished, but it was rough. So I wouldn't wait until then to give it a whirl. If you're cleared for walking now, start with a shorter distance and build up. Your body will thank you later!

Anybody else out there do crossfit? I started running almost three years ago where I was running almost everyday. When I was running at my most I was doing nothing less than a 5k and averaged a 10k. I wasn't fast I always considered myself slow and steady. So about a year ago I started crossfit to change my routine but it takes so much out of me I started running less and less distance. With less than a month to go I am starting to get concerned about the distance because I haven't run further than a half mile since the beginning of April. So now I'm wondering if I should workout less and run more or just accept I have what I have and go for it.

I don't do crossfit but I've been cross-training. :) Spin classes and the like. I had the same sudden concerns before the DL Half.

And...my feet hurt more than they did for WDW Half (but then I did get into the non-stability shoes (I do know a LOT of crossfitters and their footwear is wearing off on me LOL) and hadn't quite had enough time in those shoes), but my cardio fitness was VERY good. I actually ran/jogged almost the whole time, with walking solely because of, erm, bathroom needs. My heart and lungs were GREAT, though, and I definitely think that the other training I had been doing helped with that.

At this point, a month out, there's not much yiu can do. I'm not doing TOT, but I'm doing W&D, and I barely feel like I have enough time to really do something about it! For me it'll just be more time in the shoes. (I bailed from the New Balance with Vibram soles at the last minute, and wore my Nike Frees instead as sort of a middle ground)

So I say...maybe get in a bit more time with running, get those feet ready and get the mind ready, but don't *worry* about things. Worrying isn't going to solve anything, and the LAST thing you want to do is to injure yourself now!

Best of luck!

I do workout in a minimalist shoe but for my warm ups and post workout 400m cool downs I wear my asics and I have a pair of other running shoes that I wore for princess weekend and another half I did in April. I'm just suddenly a bit concerned about the endurance aspect of the runs. I am doing the 5k with my wife and daughter in the morning our first as a family but with the 10miler that night I'm just not sure how I will handle the run.
