Towels

If the cost of washing pool towels is that expensive don't you think that management would already at least be trying to conserve on this expense? I've never seen a single message around the pool asking members not to abuse pool towels. I would be the first to admit I haven't gone around reading every sign near the pool however. Wouldn't CM's be instructing members on proper towel etiquette rather than telling members to use pool towels. I would think that any extra cost in washing these types of linens would be at least partially offset by the volume that Disney handles everyday and the the fact that I am sure that they handle it in the most efficient manner.

What next? A time limit on how long we must keep our pool towel before getting a new one? How wet must it be before throwing it in the container? We all do put them in the container right? All those towels left lying on the ground in a puddle must be from the birds. Relax on the towel thing. If you need one, use it , return it, nuff said.

WDWMom, very well said. For Pete's sake, we're paying thousands and thousands of dollars as members, and we can't take a couple of towels from the pool?? I swear sometimes I think there are serious DVC police on this board. First its occupancy rules that everyone MUST abide by or else (who put these people in charge anyway?), and now its towels?? You've got to be kidding me.

I'm pretty sure that DVC has communicated to members the increased costs associated with pool towels in the past.

Certainly DVC has communicated the cost with towels in general to the membership - that's why the "Pay as you play" program was created. Some members were abusing the general towel situation at the expense of all members. So, rather than increasing the dues for everyone, they asked people that wanted extra towels to pay for them (they did this based on survey results from the membership).

You can be certain that resorts are monitoring the pool towel situation for excessive abuse, and if they see a pattern of abuse, they'll likely "lock down" the towels (I've seen them do this at Vero and at the OKW main pool on occasion).

All I was trying to do was suggest that taking a pool towel for use in the room wasn't appropriate and that if extra towels were needed, they were readily available for a nominal fee. I certaibnly didn't mean everyone to get their shorts in a knot.

Wow! Who knew there was so much debate to be had over towels. For those of you who use a fresh towel for every shower, I'd love to know who does your laundry. As the laundry lady for this household I would be pretty mad at a member of this household who took a fresh towel for every shower (except for my 8-month old son who sometimes pees on his :)). Not to mention that water is a pretty precious resource on its own.

Willow - I'm with you, between showers and family in and out of the hottub, I would freak if they used a new towel each day!!!

Captain Midnight - why renters, maybe its the DVC owners that think since they bought in, its their right!!!

It drives me nuts they way some owners think!. This is a timeshare, not the Ritz or a Four Seasons!!! If thats what you wanted, one should have never bought into the DVC concept. If you need daily maid/towel service, than feel free to pay for it. But if I go to the pool at 8:30 at night, and there aren't any towels at the pool, and I know where your room is, it will be me banging on the door looking for a POOL TOWEL!!!

What difference does it make if you take a pool towel to use for your stay and launder it yourself, and return it at the end of your stay. I bet that costs less then using a towel once and tossing it in wash bin.

In a ten day stay DVC washes my towel once. If I tossed it in the bin after each use, DVC would be doing ten or more washes for me. ;)

The problem is...if everyone took a pool towel and kept it until the end of their stay...there wouldn't be any pool towels.

I don't see a problem occasionally doing this...for example all your towels are soaking wet and you need one. But there appear to be people for whom this is a routine thing.

Of course this is only a problem with OKW...the other resorts have a hotel to help bear pool costs.

I look at it as an evironmental issue, more than anything else. I'm not a tree hugger. Just trying to do my part. Just try to imagine the amount of laundry Disney must do every day. The water, the detergent alone??

You knew going into this that you don't have daily maid service. You knew that your options are to either reuse the towels or launder them. Unfortunately, due to those who thought that they could skirt the policy and simply request fresh towels, Disney established a fee schedule to cover the costs.

Maybe instead of calling them "pool towels" they can call them "towels for the pool and for guests who don't want to pay the nominal fee for extras". :( :(

It was an attempt at humor, I tried to label it with all the funny smiles behind it..... granted it wasn't that good, but it was an attempt....

AS much as we say that we can't wait to get back, I find it surprising that some can stress over towels. Use one, hang it to dry, use it again, then wash it. Or skip one bottled water in the park and pay for towel serivce. LOL;)

Many guests, especially in cooler weather, take pool towels back to their room as not to drip all the way home. Not everyone completely dries themselves off and dresses before returning to their rooms. Pool towels often end up in the room overnight.

We've stayed in studios four times now, and I guess we always got four sets of towels, because there was always a fresh one for both of us each day - did we just get lucky or something?

How dare they not dry off completely and walk back to their room towel less!!!

As long as they return the towels to the pool area upon leaving, it's fine with me.

By the way, if your one of those people who uses a clean towel for each shower, doesn't using a couple of pool towels back in your room and throwing them in with the load of towels you use the washer for mean that you use less washer loads and therefore less water and soap? I was a couple of comments about being a tree hugger, and the thought hit me that using pool towels might mean less water usage if they are included in the batch of wash with the other towels. I know, this is much to much about a very small issue. By the way, we pay the small fee for extra towels when we need them, it's chump change compared to the overall vacation expenses.

It's funny how a fee for towels from Disney is " nominal " , but the POTENTIAL for a $ .02 increase in dues per month sends people screaming into the streets.

Captain Midnight - I got it. But then, a sense of humor is helpful in recognizing these things. I almost put it in my post as a joke , but I knew the flames would be right there at my heels.

Take em, use em, put em back in the bin.

I'm the guilty party - I use a fresh towel daily & I also am the "laundry lady" at my house. However, DD's fold & put them away, so they really get the raw end of the deal!

Last trip we hung our towels to dry after showers, however, if we went swimming for a few hours & knew they would not be dry when we returned we took a dry one from the pool. There's nothing worse then getting out of a hot shower & trying to dry off with a cold, wet towel & as I stated before I won't put them in the dryer when we are out for fear of a fire.

Call me paranoid - that's just the rule at our house - all appliances off when you leave! :jester:

Captain Midnight's point about throwing a pool towel that makes its way back to the room after being wrapped around a small child
is pretty much what happens with us. We wash the pool towel or towels and they then go back to the pool with us on a future trip. When we drive we throw a couple extra towels in the van so we do not have to do laundry as often. If the worst thing that ever happened at the DVC was that a pool towel was occasionally used back in the room then the DVC is as wonderful as we have always thought it is.

For the record we wash our towels in the room, but only because it is very convenient and the quality of the room towels far outweighs the quality of the pool towels.

We specifically asked what we should do if we needed extra towels before we bought. We were specifically told (with two guides in the room) to take what we needed from the pool area. We were not told that Trash and towel even existed. Never considered this anything to get upset about. Still don't.

Those that sing the dues song need to consider that not everyone uses the pool at all. Should THEY have to pay for the pool towels you use there? Not everyone fills up that HUGE jaccuzzi tub with tons of hot water, should THEY pay for your luxury? Not everyone runs a washer and dryer to clean 4 towels, should they pay for the hot water, gas and electric that you use? (Actually, this seems much more wasteful and expensive than Disney mass washing the towels, but maybe that's just me.)

Cmon guys, its a vacation. You KNEW when you bought that not everyone takes advantage of EVERY feature, but we all share the costs. Stop judging and it seems time to move this thread to the debate board.

Just another opinion.

You made several excellent points, Tagrel. Rules are made for general reasons, but one would hope there would be some common sense used in applying them. I guess technically it would be against the rules to grab an extra bath towel from housekeeping, but what about a family who goes to the pool every day and the kids think nothing of getting a fresh towel every time they exit the pool? That wouldn't be breaking the rule, but in reality it would be much more expensive and unfairly raise expenses for all.

And if someone normally uses a bath towel repeatedly and they are comfortable, that is their choice. I normally use a fresh towel every day at home and don't plan to change that on vacation. I don't scrub myself to the point of sterility during showers, and reusing a towel that I am sure has some residual lotion, makeup, conditioner, etc. and has been sitting around for a day or longer, and hoping I don't dry my face today with the part I dried my feet with yesterday is not an option. I didn't vote on the poll at the beginning of this thread because I just cringed at the thought of the "options" listed.

I still think more bath towels should be provided in the studios and it would not cost DVC any more money to do so.
