Towel Thief!

Sorry I didnt read the whole thread but was curious -- our last stay, which was our first stay as DVC members we'd walk back to our rooms with our towels from the pool area wrapped around us, etc... later in the day or the next day depending on when we went out again/back to the pool we'd return those towels to the pool area and drop them into the used barrel. Is there any issue in doing that?

No, you are using a pool towel as a pool towel and returning it to the pool.

I've seen the open laundry cart at OKW many times, there all by its lonesome, at night. It has never occured to me to take towels. I've always found that what is provided per accomodation to be enough for our traveling party. OKW does keep the replacement linens for a villa in a basket lined up just outside each door, and I hope that passers by would not go in there and help themselves.

If I can't wait till the 4th day, I just wash them. I bring my own beach towels, I need more than a postage stamp to lay out or cover my assets.

Carts have an inventory, when towels disappear someone has to account for them. No we don't take towels, we use the ones we are given and laundry them if we need to.

I always go and grab 1 pool towel at check in to use for my hair. the room towels are just too thick to wrap around my head like a turban while I dry and lotion. I tried the hand towels but they are too small.
I use my bath towel and hang it on the pants hanger in the closet. It dries better in the closet than in the bathroom.
when I stay alone I always call mousekeeping and tell them to NOT do the room clean-up mid week. If I am alone I have plenty of towels to used and don't need them to come tidy up my room, I can do that myself.
When I stay with the family it is usually in a 2 bedroom. I have taught all my family to hang their towels to dry, even at home. We wash towels once a week, not daily and don't expect any different in our home away from home. We do get the mid week clean sheets and towels. I also bring my own queen sheet that I picked up at IKEA for about $4. I put the sheet on first thing and it stays on all week. It is fitted so I dont' have to bother readjusting that flat sheet and trying to keep it on the bed. I put my fitted sheet right over the sheets that are already on the bed.
I also pack away the spread. I don't know how often they are changed, usually in hotels it is once every 3 months, so I am not going to sit on someone else's whatever. I take the spread off as soon as I get into the room and leave it folded in the corner till check out when I put the folded spread on the bed for mousekeeping to deal with.
but of course this could lead to a GARBAGE discussion. I always take my garbage and recycleables out daily and put it into the trash room. I had a black snake come under the door once in my OKW room so I am not leaving anything that might invite another in. I also never stay on a ground floor anymore although someone posted once about a snake coming onto the balcony of their 2nd floor room at OKW. UGGH1

I did not think they changed the sheets midweek only trash and towels. Since we are usually in a one bedroom I just wash the towels. Bought wash cloths and extra dish towels for OL so we are good to go.

I will bring a towel from the pool to wrap around me, but we always bring them back down the next day so it is less work for those sorting them.

SNAKES? I hate snakes. And we're staying at OKW for the first time in December in a first floor villa (MIL can't do stairs.)

Don't worry, in December it will be cool enough that they aren't going to be too active anyway! I've stayed at OKW close to 30 times, (usually in December or January), and I cn honestly say I've never seen a snake there. Frogs...but not snakes. In fact, we have had tree frogs come into our ground floor unit several times.

I can handle tree frogs as they are kind of cute. But SNAKES are a different story!

I knew when I read the title what the responses to this thread would be. It seems like every six months or so a towel thread pops up. You should ask if it's okay to stay in your room past 11 AM on departure day in your next thread.

Or perhaps people need to lighten up and realize that not everybody in the world feels entitled, intends to break rules or means to cause harm. Like I said, it was a simple question - because it was suggested by my tour guide!

Looking at your title, I suspect you knew it was wrong when you posted it. It is a simple question and a simple answer. I hope you misunderstood your guide or he's no longer with the company if he was encouraging members to violate the policies in place and to be dishonest. I know some guides have suggested the same of the pool carts, I've never seen where one suggested grabbing from the mousekeeping carts.

I too prefer the system that HH and VB has instituted. When the Trash and Towel goes away in a couple of years, it's issues such as this that will be partly responsible.

I love clean towels, and we are ALWAYS charged for them. ALWAYS. I read these threads where people say the Housekeepers just hand them extras. I am here to tell you that NEVER happens to me. And yes, I am polite and I do tip.

Not only do I NOT get free towels, but the one time I called to report that we had NO linens for the pull-out sofa the lady came in and looked around herself before she gave them to me. I just wanted sheets for the bed so DS wouldn't be sleeping on the bare mattress! I wasn't attempting some sort of sheet scam!

This year we will have a washer & dryer so I will just launder the towels myself. I am also bringing beach towels that I will leave in the Owner's Locker.

That is my intent for all future DVC visits, to use the washer and dryer in the room. That just seems simple. AND, I can use the detergent and dryer sheets I like so that my towels smell good.

I do not aggree. To take the towel home is stealing. To use it then leave it for them is not. Maybe it is not the proper way to get extra towels, I have ask and been given them but stealing, I don't thing so...smjj

I agree.

I always want to do the right thing, (hence my asking), but saying it is stealing is a bit far-fetched and too anal really. It may not be the best choice, but it is not stealing.

Either way, I will not pull towels from the cart. I do not want to upset the delicate balance of the Disboards towel patrol.

By this logic, using your neighbors wireless isn't stealing. (Add the logic that if they cared, they'd have put a WEP key on it). Splicing the cable to get more access than you paid for - or tapping into your neighbors isn't stealing. Borrowing a big screen TV from Best Buy for the Superbowl and returning in on Monday isn't stealing.

Now THAT IS stealing!

And for the record, when I asked my question, I knew that Mousekeeping was every 4 days, but I WAS NOT aware that there was a charge for asking for towels more often.

Like I said, I like to follow the rules and do what is expected of me. No worries, I will be washing my towels anyhow.

You know when I first read this post I thought for sure you were a newbie so I went back to look at it and your post count is over 13k.

After that many posts I would think you would know all about the anal DIS police. You gotta take everything on this board with a grain of salt and a sense of humour.

I have long hair and I need two towels. So I guess one of my kids is going to have to drip dry this summer after their shower.

I don't care what people think. I have never used a mug for more than one vacation, I have never pool-hopped, I always give up my seat on the bus, I don't bring coolers or meals into the parks and I follow all of the rules....so I am not going to take towels that are not mine either.

Strong new policy for rule breakers...

Effective June 1, 2010; All DVC accomodations will be supplied with a half-pound rock (.23 kilograms for our UK guests). When a guest is identified breaking any DVC rule, the offending guest will be brought to the resort community hall. All members currently staying at the resort will return to their room, retreive their rock and proceed to community hall for a public stoning. Failure to comply with the stoning will result in that guest being subsequently stoned as well. Remember only one stone per guest, use of more than one stone will result in the breaking of the stoning policy, resulting in immediate stoning.

This new policy replaces the previous waterboarding policy.

In all fairness, it would seem the question you posed in the original post here was inviting some of the resulting discussion, expectedly heated in some cases.

The last time I looked at the housekeeping "carts" they were all locked without towels sitting there, available for "plucking". That being said, also some resorts such as OKW utilize wicker baskets left outside the individual villas containing the exact number of towels and supplies needed for each particular room cleaning.

Perhaps your Tour Guide was making a joke...

Towel threads rival the threads on refillable mugs and pool hopping.

And while I know it seems trivial to some, people on these boards take it seriously. But here's the thing--(and this is true in life, not just DVC)--when you hold people accountable for the LITTLE LIMITS, then they never TRY to get away with the bigger things.

I also get my extra towels from the pool. There isn't a sign forbidding guests from taking the towels to their rooms so I don't consider this wrong. We always leave the used towels in the room and the housekeepers have never said there was a problem.

Actually, yes, there ARE signs. They ask that pool towels not be removed from the pool area. And more importantly, you signed contracts stating that you would abide by DVC rules. And whether or not this is a silly rule is immaterial--we all signed the contract saying we would play by the rules.

Yeah..... I take the pool towels when I want to... If they wanted to limit the number of towels they would monitor it. It is clearly cheaper for them to launder a few extra than it is for them to pay someone to hand them out/collect them.

They DO monitor it. They post signs, it is in our member agreements and so on. And as Dean and others have said, the process of laundering pool towels is more expensive than laundering resort towels. Those who have taken the Keys to the Kingdom tour (not sure of the title--the one that is 8 hours long and include the laundry facility) can tell you--it IS more expensive to launder pool towels, though I won't pretend to know the specifics.

For crying out loud, it was meant as a simple question, not to start a riot. It was my TOUR GUIDE who suggested pulling the towels from the cart in the hall, so I simply asked.

I understand that it might have been an innocent question and I am sorry if you feel like you are being roasted at the stake here. But as you can see, this is a hot button issue here on the DVC boards for a variety of reasons. Like I said, people feel that it is important to hold members to the standards--if people just look the other way at the little limits, then folks will think nothing of breaking the "bigger" rules.

They aren't very closely monitored at all. That still doesn't make it right. Once again, if no one notices your hand in the cookie jar, that doesn't make cookies before dinner OK. And I'm sure laundry and replacement expenses are monitored on a macro level.

It's all all matter of integrity. Either you have it or you don't...

What we teach our kids is this--

And hey, when I was new to these boards and new to DVC, I used to say the same things..."Really? People get this heated over TOWELS?!?!" But once I understood the issues and looked at the larger issues, I saw the reasoning.

Honestly, I like it when members are ready to throw down over seemingly minor issues like towels. Because that shows that they committed to and passionate about their ownership. And that is good for the WHOLE. Passionate members are those who treat the properties with respect, those who promote membership to others, those who will hold the executives accountable, and so on--and all of that helps to keep the program operating at high quality and maintaining high standards.
