hey all!

I keep seeing touring plans mentioned in posts. I went to the website and I see there’s a fee to use it. I’m wondering, what is it exactly and is it worth it? I’ve been to Disney many times and I feel pretty knowledgeable but I’m new to the forums and all the tools that people are using these days.

Will it help me organize my upcoming trip in August? I already have my ADRs done and my park days planned out but still a couple months away from FP booking time.

Thanks in advance :)

It’s only like $15 so no harm in getting it I guess. My friend got it last year and I’ve looked at a bit, just for fun. I didn’t feel compelled to get it after looking at hers though. I do like looking at and reading all things disney, so that might sway me to get it ... also, TP has many YouTube videos out there to look at, now those I really enjoy. Great info.

There is a free option so you can see more of the content before deciding to get a paid subscription. It's basically the website for the Unofficial Guide and I absolutely love it.

I have it and I love it just because it helps me plan and I made use on their reservation finder and it found us a BOG lunch res
The way I look it’s $15 on a what 7k trip if anything can help .. it’s worth it

I go way back with Touring Plans. My mom bought the Unofficial Guide in 1988 before my first trip to the World. I really love their customizable touring plans. I have a stressful job that involves a lot of decision making, so having a list telling me where to go in what order each day appeals to me. No decisions, no debating what's next. It's also helpful in thinking what exactly we can fit into a day.

And there are some other tools of theirs I have found handy. They will fax a room request to the resort for you. They also have a tool to automatically search for dining reservations that I successfully used to move our California Grill reservation to a better time.

If you search around there's often discount codes for the membership (I think I found one on MouseSavers.) I paid $10 for my membership and in light of the thousands we spent on the trip, it seemed like nothing. I am very type A and I loved all the planning info available on Touring Plans.

Touring Plans uses models to predict both crowds and ride wait times. There's an interesting podcast on the Dis Unplugged where they interview Len Testa about the methodology behind it all (it was on 3/6/18.) With a subscription and if you believe in their ability to predict crowds, you can plan your whole trip using their recommendations. You can make up your own "custom touring plan" where you select the park, pick out all of the rides, shows, attractions, meals, breaks that you want, and it will come up with an "optimized" order to follow. It makes recommendations on which fast passes to get and then once you get them you can reoptimize your plan and it will incorporate them. You can download their app where it gives you their predicted wait times vs. Disney's posted wait times and keeps track of your plan for you.

There's lots of debate over whether or not the methodology is accurate, if it's worth it, etc. When we were there in December I found that the actual wait time usually fell somewhere between Disney's posted wait time and Touring Plans' prediction. It was entirely my fault, but I got way too into trying to beat the crowds and spent a ton of time while in the park on the app trying to reoptimize after every ride, or getting stressed out when we fell behind our planned time schedule. I couldn't relax and enjoy quality family time because I felt like I was missing out on the 'smartest' way to do things if I didn't keep checking on our plan. Again, my fault and definitely my own Type A personality working against me.

If you're staying onsite, Touring Plans has pictures of the views from nearly every type of room at all of the hotels. You can check them out in advance and then fill out a room request form with TP that they will fax to the hotel for you. We did that for our Dec trip but there were pros and cons to it. For one, our room wasn't ready at check-in and they said it was because we had made a special room request. And also, we didn't get the room that I had requested. We stayed at the Contemporary in the garden wing and I asked for a first floor room with a view of the pool. We did get first floor but no view of the pool... so our request was somewhat met, and overall we ended up being really grateful we were on the first floor.

Touring Plans also has an ADR reservation finder that is awesome. I actually think it's the most valuable feature on their site, and ironically, it's free (no subscription needed to use it.) They will text you when the ADR you want opens up and if you're quick enough you can catch it. I got shut out of 3 restaurants we wanted at 6am at 180+ days out but with the rez finder I ended up getting everything we wanted at the exact times we wanted.

Hope that's helpful information, if there's anything else you're specifically curious about, let me know! I think for only $10 it's worth it. I know I spend $10 without blinking at the parks!

Thanks everyone! It sounds like something I would use and I do have a few ADRs that I want to change times on and I also want to do a room request so I am going to subscribe after all. I am using these next 5 months to occupy myself with overly planning every aspect of this trip to keep myself from going crazy over the long wait. We aren't telling our children until right before the trip so I cant even talk much about it and to be honest, I think hubby is sick of hearing me talk about it. Thank goodness for my fellow disney lovers here!!

Save your money and search around the various free Disney forums, there are several. Each talks about the same items and you can easily search older posts for the most common questions which get asked repeatedly. None of those 3rd party sites have any special 'inside' info and are simply trying to capitalize on the Disney popularity. I have watched a few of those podcasts and thought they looked amateurish. I was expecting individuals who would be experts about Disney, but one of the panelists admitted they didn't even know how FastPass worked ....LOL.

Efforts to predict wait times on rides is basically useless as there are far too many random variables to consider. While anyone can develop a formula, it doesn't mean it will have any degree of accuracy. Honestly, even Disney has no idea who will show up at which park on a given day, so to project estimates down to the ride level is nonsense. A list of the historically most popular rides is far more useful.

I've been using touringplans to make customized touring plans for our upcoming trip. I like that it factors in things like ride/show length and how long it will take you to walk to one attraction to another. It helps me be realistic about what I can do in one day. In the past when I followed their touring plans I was usually way ahead of schedule but I still think they are worthwhile. I like the information on the touringplans site, but I think that is free. The books are fun to read and you get a discount on the online subscription with your purchase.

I use them more for the ADR finder than the planning. My wife can't handle a plan and we have to take a lot of breaks and change things at the last minute all the time. If we get half a dozen rides in a day, it's a busy day for us. However, being able to find that ADR that is eluding you is awesome. I did a lot of last minute changes with it.

I use TP but mainly for room requests and their lines app. I’m not big into major touring plans but the rest I find worth it to me to subscribe.

The ADR feature was the only real thing we used TP for, and now that we do not really do much ADR's we have not bought it in years. I can fax a request myself, their line app is really no better then other free apps, I can use their room views and other stuff from their free site.

Reservation Finder and Lines App are my favorite features from TP. I also use their room request fax service and have had good luck with it.

Some of the stuff is available on the free areas, but I really appreciate the Lines App - the wait times are usually more accurate.

I enjoy using it. It helped me get a reservation at Ohana when I didn't book 180 days in aadvanced. You can also customize touring plans so you know how long you will be in the attraction as well as the time walking between attractions.

It's only good for a year, right? So if I want it for our May 2020 trip, I shouldn't purchase until we are one year out?
That's correct, if you don't want to pay twice.

I love Touring Plans. I make my own customized plans and I can estimate crowds based on their predictions. I've use the reservation finder and the room request. But the biggest for me is the customized plans. Also, there's a forum there, so I can have questions answered here and some answered there. You never know when and where your'e going to learn something new.

I've used it many times to make a park "schedule/plan", and it has been fairly accurate on predicted wait times-very accurate if I reevaluated the custom plans I make a few days before I go. I use it as a guide and not a written in stone agenda.

I signed up. I am having so much fun with the detailed touring plans- putting in what park were doing each day, ADR, etc. Its better than what I have currently- which is what I write on paper and fold up and stick in my purse and then restart a new one every time I change my mind. lol

If nothing else, this is an excellent way for me to spend my time and keep me busy!

I find its inexpensive. i really like the custom touring plan that it can create.
Love the wait time app and use it frequently in the park.
While free, the reservation has been very helpful as well.

I use it frequently enough that i don't mid spending a little to support it.
I usually buy the combination of Disney and Universal which makes it even cheaper for the 2 parks.
