Take a look at www.touringplans.com There are some sample plans there that will give you an idea.
We don't follow a strict touring plan; we have a general idea of what we want to see, and in what order. BUT-- and this is important-- that's because we've been there before. We know the lay of the land, we know which rides we need to get to immediately if we don't want to wait hours in the August sun.
I suggest having at the very least that sort of an idea. Know fastpass, and how to use it. Know where you're going when you enter the park. (We split up, and I get our first set of fastpasses, then meet the rest of the family. We'll get 2 or 3 of the biggest rides done in that first hour or so.)
Definitely follow (or at least roughly follow) a touring plan unless you want to spend most of your time in a line up waiting to ride.....not my idea of fun. The first couple of trips we strictly followed a touring plan but now we just follow the first 6 or so steps and then do our own thing which tends to work okay too......but then we have seen pretty much everything over the years and don't feel the same kind of need to "do it all".
Neighbours of ours went to Disney and had never heard of a touring plan and said that all the line ups were too long to do much of anything so they just walked around enjoying the sights but were very disappointed in the whole Disney experience. When we got together and talked about what we did (almost everything), she was completely shocked since they got to do practically nothing.
The best advice to take from a touring plan is to be there before rope drop. Good luck!
