A few general things:
  • First and foremost: since you don't have park hoppers, I highly recommend that you avoid the parks with EMH. The park with EMH is always much much busier than the other parks by late morning. I cannot stress this enough. Use the crowd calendar at easywdw.com to choose your days.
  • You'll need to leave Disney Springs about 2 hours before your DME pick up time (which will be about 3 hours before your flight.)
  • The first 2 posts in this thread: http://www.disboards.com/threads/fa...ed-priorities-and-strategies-part-ii.3326057/ will give you everything you need to know about FP+
  • I recommend picking up a copy of The Easy Guide to Your First Walt Disney World Visit.
  • I would skip Disney Springs on Thursday. 3 times in one trip is just way to much. Really twice is too much. I would spend the extra $10 per person and go to a park that day.
  • I think you're selling Epcot short. I would add another day there if you can. We can easily fill 3 entire days there.
  • Raglan Road is not to be missed.

Flower and Garden will be going on at Epcot during your visit - I agree with PP that you may be selling Epcot short. In May, we like to do 1 1/2 Epcot days.

If your daughter really likes princesses, you'll need to work those into your plans! Epcot is good for meeting them, but lines can grow quickly, with overflow into their next set, such as Belle in France.

If Rivers of Light ends up being FP+ at AK, and you want to see it, I think that would end up being your last FP for AK.

Thanks for the reply.

We had been tracking the crowd calendar at: https://www.undercovertourist.com/orlando/crowd-calendar/may-2016/#calendar

It changed on us. When we set our days and ADR all day were yellow. Now two are red and three are yellow. I'll have to see if our ADR would be able to be changed, BUT will it change again? The crowd calendar you provide looks like it just mirrors the EMH days???? Is the crowd that different to warrant missing on the EMH, which was one of the reasons we decided to stay on Disney property?

We are really only "planning" one day at DSpings. The other days are open for relaxing and what ever the groups decides. With five days in the parks, I doubt we would add another.

I have heard from friend that they love Epcot, but.... there is only so much time and too much to see. The only option is skip the day off, which many others say a day off really helps. Awfully confusing and hard to plan. Can we add an extra day spur of the moment? Yeah, we miss on FPs, but it allow spontaneity.

Howdy all. I'm thankful we found this resource. The wife and I have been becoming overwhelmed trying to decipher all the details to planning a WDW family trip and reading the tips here is helping. We are planning our first family trip with the kids. Wife worked at WDW for a summer back in college and we both visited as young kids; but that was a lifetime ago. We are now visiting our out 9yo son and 5 yo daughter.

Plans are set for arrival May 9th for 7 nights. Originally 6 nights but the current special to add a 5th day of park passes trapped me and I added a night. Staying at POR in a Royal Room, pool view. Our DD is princess crazy (they all are right?) so that tips the scales for us at POR. I'm happy for comments and insight, but really using this thread to help me gain composure on all that WDW has to offer. I'm a planning nut ahead of time, but actually pretty good about about go with the flow once we arrive. Hopefully I can stick to that concept at WDW. Our goal is to be catch all our main events, but with young kids keep in calm and relax. We also plan to have breaks in park, vs leaving back to the resort, just to save on wasted travel time.

So, here is out plan thus far. Obviously not complete yet but I'll update this post as I figure things out.

Monday:

Arrival to Airport at 1:00 PM ish - 2:00 PM ish at POR (trying out the Express bus system).
ADR for 7:00 PM at Raglan Rd. DD is in love with Irish dance (this played a part in adding a day once we found this place).
No other plans. We will enjoy the resort and pool, snack, etc at leisure, shop at DSprings.

Tuesday: MK Early EMH

Light BF then Rope Drop at MK.
Lunch Quick Service when it works out.
ADR at Royal Table at 5:40 PM.
FP: ? Thinking day one just working on Frontier, Liberty, Adventurelands; day two Fantasy and Tomorrow lands. Prob: Peter Pan, Splash Mt, ??
Watching Parade from Frontier land somewhere.
Wishes from near the Central Plaza. No real idea yet, just in front of the castle.

We found this a good plan, to focus on one side of the park each day. Then our third day we focused on character M&Gs etc...
If you're going to rope drop and take advantage of EMH, you'll be able to get a LOT done in the first few hours. The "biggies" on that side of the park to consider for FP+ would be BTMR, Splash, Haunted Mansion, Pirates. The best plan is to rope drop as much as you can, and then save your FP+ for later in the day when lines/waits start building. Also, it's going to be VERY hot by May, so you may want to look at staying till lunch (or whenever you get hot), then going back to your resort to swim/relax etc... then go back to the park. You do not need park hoppers to do this, and even a couple hours break can refresh you. Disney in May is HOT and tiring.

Wednesday: MK Lat EMH

BF ADR at Ohana 8:45am.
Arrive a bit later to MK.
Lunch Quick Service when it works.
ADR at BOG at 7:10 PM.
Watch Fireworks from near BOG and jump right on Mine ride.
FP:? Elsa/Anna if still there or the Disney Princess MG thing for DD; Space MT for DS and Dad. Mine ride earlier (second time at night if we can after fireworks.)

I would FP+ A&E, Peter Pan and Space MT. You'll meet roughly 5 princesses at CRT on Tuesday. One ride to try and rope drop to save a FP+ is Enchanted Tales with Belle. It's very nice, interactive and each child that participates will have a chance to have a photo taken with Belle. Our kids (son 8, daughter 5) loved it.

Thursday: OFF

Sleep in after a really late night for the kids. Full breakfast at POR. Swim, relax, etc.
Lunch either at POR or Food carts at DSprings.
ADR for 6:15 at Hoop-de-Do Review (section B).
Back in time for Ye Ha Bob (hopefully).

Great plan, we loved HDDR.

Friday: HS Late EMH

Breakfast on the go.
Lunch ADR at Sci-Fi Diner: 11:30am
ADR for Minnie's Season Fantasmic at Hollywood and Vine at 6:00PM
Star Wars Visa Meet at Great (Need to figure out yet)
FP: Toy Story; Star Tours; ?????
(need to figure out times and plans for Star Wars fireworks)
Fantasmic at 9:00 PM

What you FP+ here depends on your interests. Also, if your kids are interested in Star Wars - I STRONGLY recommend doing Jedi Training Academy, it's great. To give you and idea, this is what we did during our HS day (granted we went end of June when Frozen Fever was running): Muppets Playground (kids loved it), Star Tours, TSMM 2x (definitely FP+), Indiana Jones, Frozen Sing Along (I would FP+ this), Jedi Training Academy, Frozen parade, DJ Mickey dance party, Little Mermaid, Frozen fireworks, Fantasmic.

Saturday: AK Early EMH

BF on the go
Lunch has to be Flame Tree BBQ when time works
ADR: Okay, so AK is planned to close at 5:00PM; we eat late normally, so we ADR at 7:00PM at the Boathouse (need one great meal). But now I think this new night show will be open so likely to change. I assume the park will stay open later and we will change to either the new place at AK or to Yak n Yeti for dinner.
FP: Safari; Kali River Rapids; ???
Maybe night safari, need to learn more.

This is so hard to say right now, not knowing for sure the hours etc... IF the ROL and Night Safari are open, I would plan on saving a FP+ for each of those, and then FP+ Kali. You can rope drop Everest (if interested) as well as the daytime safari with good success, especially with morning EMH. Also, look into the Wilderness Explorers program, our kids loved doing this.

Sunday: Epcot, no EHM

Lazy morning, no rush, maybe BF at POR
Lunch TBD
ADR at San Angel Inn at 7:00PM
FP: Test Track; Mission Space (DS and I); AE Event (if open); ??? Soarin will be closed.
Plan is to be leisure; let kids run test track a couple times if lines permit. Prob do the Spaceship earth later and I read the line dies down after lunch.
I'm sure the kids will do the Fineas and Ferb hunt, and snack like crazy.
Illusions where ever we happen to be.

Sounds good. Definitely try for a FP+ for the Frozen Ever After ride if it's up and running. An idea if you go through the World Showcase: do pick a pearl in Japan. This would be a really nice treat for your wife and daughter - DD and I picked pearls and then chose matching necklaces. She loves it when we wear them together now. I would say so - try and get to EP sooner than later, EP can easily be a 2 day park, there is a LOT to see and do. I would honestly try for Rope Drop.

Monday: Departure:

Check out at 11:00am.
Plan is to let the kids swim again, relax, maybe last minute shopping at DSprings.

We added that last day, otherwise we would either (a) skip Epcot, or (b) Move Hoop-De to day one, and Epcot to the off day and not have an off day (but miss the Irish dancing). In the end, the cost difference was like $300 factoring in lesser airfare, so we decided (I think) to go the more leisurely route of adding a day.

I'm still figuring out which events require FP, which to do first thing AM and which we don't want to miss. Its' awfully extensive what you need to know to plan this out. Wife's Brother's family and GMa/GPa went two years ago with no plan and they hated it. But they went sping break, with no ADR, no FP, no plans at all, I can't imagine.

Okay, not sure we can change now.

Tuesday, MK Early EMH - Yellow.
Wednesday, MK Late EMH - Red
Thursday off
Friday, HS late EMH - Red
Sat, AK early EMH - Yellow
Sunday, EP - Yellow.

I looked to change our Wednesday and Friday to solve the reds; BUT....we planed for BOG dinner for Wednesday. We cannot get that reservation any other day. If we move HS to Wednesday we can get the Fantasmic package still. How much is the crowd difference? So far, the main thing we worked on is where we want ADRs, and we pegged all those we wanted. Little disappointed that the crowd calendar changed from when we booked our ADRs.

MShanson, great stuff, thanks. We hadn't planned to see Epcot at all, so my "plan" such that it is, was to get there as soon as I can muster the kids. But knowing it is very large for walking, that might not be till 10:00am. If they are up for a rope drop, I'm sure I can coffee myself through it.

By "rope dropping" something, I assume you mean, be there when it opens, and be-line for the ride but don't fast pass it. Correct?

I need to figure out a balance of adventure rides on mountains for the boy, and shows for the girl too.

This is me, but take the crowd calendars with a grain of salt. When we went every day was 8/9 for crowd levels (red), so pretty high. We went to MK on a red/non-recommended day that had morning EMH - and honestly? It was one of our best days there and we got a LOT accomplished. On the flip side, we went to AK on a recommended day that was not EMH, and it was very crowded and felt far worse than MK did on the non-recommended day. Part of that is due to construction and it's smaller, but still.

Honestly? You have good plans and good ADRs made - stick with it. Even on busy, non-recommended days, you can still have a great time.

Yes. Plan to be in line at the park roughly 30 minutes before it opens (as often the parks will open 10-15 minutes earlier than they post). While it will feel llike a mass of people and you'll wonder what on earth you were thinking, the crowd dissipates fairly quickly throughout the park, and that first hour especially you can have a low wait time even on bigger rides.

Y'know what's funny - we were trying for a balance too, but we were surprised at how much they both loves everything. My son really enjoyed Enchanted Tales with Belle for example, because he got to be part of the show. Likewise, he loved Frozen Sing a Long and Little Mermaid at DHS. Our daughter thought Indiana Jones was awesome, and Jedi Training Academy, too. Our son even enjoyed meeting the princesses - we did Bibbiddi Bobbidi Boutique for both of the kids and our son of course received his sword and shield. He had all the princesses sign the back of his shield, and they all made a big deal about him being their "protector"... since he's big into knights/dragons etc... it was right up his alley.

Wednesday: MK Lat EMH

BF ADR at Ohana 8:45am.
Arrive a bit later to MK.

I agree with the comments about avoiding EMH, but if you are going to keep this day at the MK, I would recommend a later start. When we have done EMH until 12 AM (our kids are night owls) we normally would start with a very late breakfast. I would relax in the morning and schedule Ohana as late as possible. Your current plan is a very long day.

I think you have pretty long days. Are you planning on going back to the room for an afternoon break? We can't do rope drop to fireworks, without some sort of break It is just too much for us.

How long should we plan for travel from hotel to resort? Hour? Half hour? I thought 8:45 was later. We also plan a good 2 hrs for lunch mid day for a "break" and part of the day off was recouping from two days at MK. We thought about flipping to WL to be closer to MK, but would have to drop a night of the trip to do so. Just sharing my thought process as obviously we are new to this.

EDIT

wouldn't going back to the hotel take 1.5 to 2 hrs plus actual down time? Seems it would be at least a four hr break.

You need to allow a full hour for traveling: to get out of the park, on transportation, back to your resort and up to your room. So yes, if you want a two hour break, you need to plan on a 4 hour block of time: 1 hour to get back to resort, 2 hour break, 1 hour to get back to park. However, I would wager that most 5 & 7 year olds, are not going to be capable of being in park from 9 am until midnight. If we had tried that our trip would have been an utter and total disaster. You have to realize how hot it's going to be, and how much that heat can sap your energy and fatigues you. There are people that RD to close successfully, yes, and many more that just can't. The only thing you can do I guess is try and see how it goes. But it would be smarter to plan accordingly for taking an afternoon break, and then if you find you don't need it, great.

https://www.undercovertourist.com/orlando/crowd-calendar/may-2016/#calendar

I have never found Undercover Tourist's crowd Calendar to be particularly accurate. They are a great place to buy your tickets, though.
The crowd calendar you provide looks like it just mirrors the EMH days????

Largely yes, but that's because EMH has a huge impact on crowds. We Go when the parks are busy and rarely have to stand in line more than 20 minutes (and never more than 30 minutes.) I attribute that to avoiding EMH and having a good touring plan.

Is the crowd that different to warrant missing on the EMH, which was one of the reasons we decided to stay on Disney property?

If you really want to take advantage of EMH, I recommend getting park hoppers.

I have heard from friend that they love Epcot, but.... there is only so much time and too much to see. The only option is skip the day off, which many others say a day off really helps.

I tried the day off once. We were bored to tears by 10:00 am and in a park by 11:00.

Can we add an extra day spur of the moment? Yeah, we miss on FPs, but it allow spontaneity.

Yes. You can upgrade your ticket at any guest relations location.

How long should we plan for travel from hotel to resort?

Generally speaking, an hour.

We also plan a good 2 hrs for lunch mid day for a "break" and part of the day off was recouping from two days at MK.

We find the mid day break to be a momentum killer. Instead, we just slow down when we need to.

We thought about flipping to WL to be closer to MK, but would have to drop a night of the trip to do so. Just sharing my thought process as obviously we are new to this.

I would never choose a more expensive hotel at the expense of park days, but it's a personal decision.

wouldn't going back to the hotel take 1.5 to 2 hrs plus actual down time? Seems it would be at least a four hr break.

Yep.

You will love POR.....it's a beautiful resort with all the lush grounds.

It was nice being able to take the boat to Disney Springs from the resort and we found the bus service to the parks to be very good as well.

We really enjoyed the food court at POR...it has lots of options to choose from.

Have a great trip!

you have a plan, don't worry about the crowds just take your time and enjoy yourself's. Here's some random thoughts,
Allow at least 1:45 to travel from POR to HDDR if you bus to MK and boat across.
Watch the outdoor movie with your kids at POR.
If disney quest is still open when you go your kids would probably enjoy it.
We get tired of the resort breakfast offerings, a cab to POLY is $20 and takes 10 min. Try breakfast at Kona and walk around POLY and ride the monorail and check out the other resorts if you want.

I'm not sure about flipping around now. Our first day at MK (early EMH) we have a dinner ADR at Royal Table. We can get that ADR on the other days, but at 8:10pm, which makes it difficult to get done in time for MSEP and Wishes. Our second day at MK (late EMH) we have dinner at BOG. We cannot get dinner ADR on the other days at any reasonable time. We could flip to a late lunch though, or skip. So frustrating.

What do you all do on the arrival day and departure day? Given check out is 11:00 AM, and you need to leave 3 hrs before airline departure, I had not planned to do anything on the last day except enjoy POR and maybe let kids swim. Arrival day; our plane lands at 1:11 PM. Guessing 2:30PM arrival at POR. We have dinner at 7:00 PM at DS, BUT this was after adding a day for EP and planning to keep our day off. Now thinking to drop the day off, move HDDR to arrival day and EP on our original day off. But, I was originally concerned planning anything on arrival day in case the flight is delayed, or travel takes long, or our bags are delayed, or unknown.

EDIT:

Ok, I can change the days around, except I can't change the ADR for RT, so we are stuck with that. Only way to change the second MK day is to drop BOG from dinner to lunch, or have a 9:00 PM dinner (too late IMO) but I can reschedule the other ADRs. Quest then is, day off from the parks or no? Day off would be to sleep in, casual breakfast, pool time, and either HDDR or DSprings, maybe followed by outdoor movie and/or Ye-Ha-Bob.

The question then is, how much of a crowd swing from green to red is there? Is it worth dropping BOG from dinner to lunch in order to alleviate the crowd disparity? The Crowd level is listed at 5 for Tues-Friday and 6 for Sat/Sun. So, average for the year.

EDIT 2:

Another idea. Keep Mon, Tues, Wed, Thur, Sun plans as they are. Flip Friday and Saturday around. That leaves me with:

Mon: Arrive - Raglan ADR
Tues: MK am EMH, RT ADR - Red
Weds: MK pm EMH, BOG ADR - Red
Thur: Off, HDDR 6:15 ADR
Fri: AK, ADR ????? - Green
Sat: HS, Sci/Fi ADR lunch, Minnie Fantasmic ADR Dinner - Green
Sun: EP, SAI ADR, Green

Crowds per Easywdw.com My "guess", uneducated as it is, would be that MK would be the easier of the parks to handle the larger crowds on EMH days.

I'd drop the Boathouse ADR for AK day and either get an ADR at Boma for now then wait and see how the park hours change when ROL schedule is posted.

You'd be trading two red days for THREE red days, doing this.
Honestly, IMO - stick with what you have. But that's me. Some people think EMH are horrible, but from what we saw, morning EMH made no noticeable difference at all, and again, that was on crowd level 8/9 days. I do think evening EMH are more likely to draw a crowd - people seem to be more willing to stay up late than get up early when on vacation, lol. But my point is - even if it's busy, you can still have a wonderful time if you tour smartly - be there at rope drop, use your FP+ etc...

No, we would go from four red days (all with EMH) on Tues, Weds, Fri, Sat, to two red days. Just keeping Tues/Weds as is, Thursday off, flip Friday and Sat.
