Tour without spouse?

I tried to do a search for this question, but nothing came up. Is it possible to do the tour without your spouse? We are seriously thinking of buying DVC. We will be at Disney in January and I would like to take the tour. My husband is fine with whatever I choose to purchase. (We have a budget and whatever is within that budget is okay with him.) We own 4 Marriott Vacation Club weeks and he has been to MANY presentations. If his presence is required at the tour, then the deal is off. With Marriott, they will not give an official tour unless both husband and wife are present. I realize I can purchase over the phone, but I would really like to see each property in person before I make up my mind. (I really hope the new AKV models will be open by January.)

I'm the travel planner/coordinator of the family and he just likes to "show up" the day we leave for vacation. He gives me his requests and leaves me alone to research and plan to my heart's content. (It is a perfect relationship. )

I believe this is my first post on this board, but I have been lurking here and reading/researching for weeks! I have learned so much from these boards. Not sure at this point if we will buy direct or resale.

If your the one writing the checks why would they care if he is there. It would be silly of them to deny you a tour for that reason. Just call them up and tell them you want a tour. If they say no then tell them you will buy a resale instead. They will change their minds. LOL

Hi. I took the tour without my dh just last week, so yes, you can certainly do that. However, you won't be able to see ALL the properties. Your guide will only show you SSR since that is what is currently being sold. Now come Jan. I don't know if VAKL will be for sale or not. You will see a studio all the way up to the grand villa but all at SSR. I went w/ my 2 dd. They played in the kid's clubhouse and had a great time. Afterwards, it was ice cream, pics, and a $15.00 gift card for each of us.

I don't think I was treated any differently than any other guest because my dh wasn't with me. Alas, my dh is not sold on spending that much money on a "depreciating asset," but I would love to join.

DVC IS NOT A DEPRECIATING ASSET. Look at how the values have increased over the years. Set him straight and give him facts. Maybe he thinks this is the same as the Marriot deal. ?

Welcome aboard! There are many of us on these boards that were previous lurkers! Watch out, it's addicting!
I am also the planner/coordinator of the family. I did all the research before we bought DVC. I just had DH sign at the X!

I can tell you that when we bought is was done solo by DW. The guide kept asking my wife about talking with me first but she declined his nice offer, and came home with 240 pts. So how did I react when she came home? Bought another 160 pts to make it 400! We now own 480.

Thank you for the quick replies. Marcomouse, I agree that why should they care who is writing the check, but that is the way Marriott operates. We have enjoyed their product so much over the last several years that we don't let that bother us. The last property we bought was from their telephone direct sales, pre-construction. I alone worked with their sales rep. I think part of the reason for the policy is that they give tour preview "gifts" that have a higher dollar value and hope to have serious previewers. It is an antiquated policy in this day and age.

I will plan to take the tour solo when we go in January. I understand that they will primarily be selling SSR, but from what I have gathered on these boards is that if pressed, they will sell the other properties. If I want to buy direct, I may have to wait on a list for the exact point amount and use year to come available. Are the model Boardwalk Villas still open to walk through? We stayed at the Boardwalk Inn the first year it opened and loved it.

I think I will try to do what another poster is planning with regard to the other properties. That is to just go into registration and see if I can look at an empty villa. As sick as it may sound, I like to do this! When we are on vacation I enjoy going to other timeshare properties to take a look. That way I know for future reference if we would enjoy staying at that property.

DVC is fairly unique in this situation. Most systems won't allow you to tour or if they do, withhold any tour incentives if you are not with your spouse. Many also want tour a single female regardless. And basically all have a minimal income to tour ranging from $40-75K generally from what I've seen though you never know they check. Most also do a credit check once you agree to the tour from what I'm told but I don't think DVC does.

My sister, brother and myself own about 4,000 points. we have never had a bad experience with Disney. I would be suprised if you had problem looking alone from Disney. I think its wonderfull that you and your husband have the trust to do this. You will love the experience of Disney DVC. My wife and I still do and we are in our 60's.

We toured SSR in June; after the tour ended, we went back to the Beach Club, where we were staying in the Inn, and wandered thru the "public areas" of the BCV...no model units were open...then we walked around the lake and went into the BWV...they did have units open to inspect, and the CM there was as nice as he could be about showing us around...we didn't try OKW or VWL...

From the literature, and from looking at both BWV and SSR, it appears the units are very similar--almost identical, really--in terms of the space and its layout and the "stuff" (furniture, kitchen ware, etc)...theming (and therefore decorations) are different, of course...but we didn't notice a huge difference (make that essentially no difference) between the BWV units and the SSR units...both were lovely...now that I think about it, I must add I've read a lot about how OKW units are bigger...so I guess I really can't say "they're all very similar"...but SSR & BWV are...

I plan to visit OKW and VWL (and if it's open, VAK) when we're next at WDW...

Overall the design of the units for BWV, VWL, BCV & SSR are very similar. Just minor variations along thew way. BCV & SSR are likely the two most alike.

When I took the tour, I took it alone and nobody had any objections.

I'd think, however, that they would want both parties' signatures on any purchase documentation because of community property laws -- and especially if there is any financing involved. That didn't come up with us because we were purchasing through a family trust, but I would expect it to come up in a marital purchase. If you plan on buying during the tour, you might have to bring DH back buy to sign the papers later.

But for the tour? Naw.
