We will be visiting WDW in a couple weeks and I am planning a DVC tour. We already have a couple referrals, and have gotten info already from a guide. My question is, is there some advantage to scheduling a tour before we leave home, or doing it once we get there, at our resort? Would we gain some kind of advantage either way?

No advantage. Just walk up to any kiosk and tell them when you want to visit. By the way... the Guide who mailed you the info is now your Guide.

But you can change your guide if you so choose (ie. you like your guide at the tour).

IMHO.....
No...No...scheduling a tour....with your own guide... is important.

You will save lots of time that day if you already have a guide and "on record" with DVC, because he/she will already have all your pertinent information ... he will give you the tour. It should take about an hour.
If you are staying at a Disney resort, a Disney van will pick you up at your hotel and return you after the tour.
