Curiosity got the best of me and I “impulse-bought” Tour Guide Mike after seeing it described on Mousesavers. Bottom line – clearly meant for people who don’t have the time (or don’t want to take the time) to read the valuable information on websites such as DIS, Deb’s guide, WDWMAGIC, etc.

I haven’t spent much time with the info it provided me after registering and answering questions on my vacation plans, but I’ve gathered the following. The site is essentially a compilation of reviews and articles, and an attempt to pull it together in a logical fashion and limit it to avoid it seeming overwhelming. By telling the program what you’re interested in, it narrows down the articles and reviews to fit. (Kind of defeats the purpose for someone who knows little about WDW – presumably the target audience. How do you narrow it down when you don’t know what to select?)

Navigation was far from intuitive. While it has a kind of “drill-down” approach, it wasn’t clear how to go from summary to detail. I later discovered that the index of articles for a section was always on the right – usually that is found on the left or maybe even on the top. I’m sure that was spelled out in the overview, but who reads those?

Note that the site does not provide an itinerary, nor even suggests one, but walks you through how to put one together and backs this up with his reasoning (like what parks on what days). It’s full of reviews on attractions, hotels, restaurants. But again, that information is hardly scarce these days on the internet. I guess the value is having it in one place with some sense of organization, but well done sites like DIS have that as well. Since the result is not a plan, but just an approach towards putting a plan together, the fee amounts to a registration for his site. (Please note that I have only spent less than an hour in the site – there may be more to it that I’ve completely missed. IF there is though, then that’s an indication of poor design, because it isn’t clear there is more to it than I’m seeing.)

Mike comes highly qualified, having been a CM for some time, and a tour guide, and someone who puts together VIP tours and itineraries for celebrities. He now has his own business doing pretty much that for anyone, though at I think about $100 an hour. This site is an attempt at automating this to some degree. Still, I’m not sure who I could recommend this site to. It doesn’t eliminate any planning, it does make some suggestions and gives you things to consider when making your plans, but as I said there are many free sites that do that very well also. The cost now on Mousesavers is only $15, but that is supposed to represent a 40% savings. Not sure this is worth $25, but again I have not researched it very long. If any one else has any opinions, I’d be very interested in hearing them.

...I "subscribed" to TourguideMike after seeing it originally last year when it first appeared on mousesavers. I figured if Mary recommended it, it must be a good value.

So as soon as I got it downloaded, I started to play with it. I plugged in some dates for a trip we were thinking about, but never actually took. A few weeks after this "trip" was over, I get an email from Mike saying my access was about to expire, and would I please leave some positve feedback about how much I enjoyed my experience with TGM!

EXPIRE!!! ACCESS WILL EXPIRE!!! I couldn't believe it! I had bought a software that was good for one time only?! I meant, these boards are always here (free!) and guide books, even old ones can still be helpful, right?

I was pretty steamed and wrote to Mike my feelings. Told him I somehow missed the large disclaimers he said were present (since then he's made them very visible) stating this was a one time use deal. I told him I never actually took the trip I plugged in, so I had pretty much wasted $25. Not very much positive to say.

That email started written warfare between myself and Mike. His first letters to me were pretty nasty and acusatory. He wanted to know how I could dare criticize his work after never really using it. (Actually, I only said it was a very poor value, since only having it good for one use, that I myself had blown.) I told him I didn't think much of his customer relation skills, that he had asked for my opinion, and I was as honest as I thought I could be considering the use I had got from his product at that point. We exchanged several very heated letters, and finally he got MY point, that lots of people return to WDW for trips, and a one-time use product was not of much use to them.

His tone became very gracious and apologetic, and he has offered me use of TGM again (free). I never asked for anything, but he did offer and to be fair I will use it for our upcoming trip in October.

My first impression is similar to yours. I find that since it just keeps refering me to articles to read, and never actually says what my itinerary should actually be, I'm getting a lot of the same info I find here on these boards! (free)

Whew!. That got long...anyway, that's my story. I'll let you know how I felt it worked.

I happen to be enjoying the site very much. Having never "planned" a Disney trip, I am finding it very helpful.

While I acknowledge that most of the info is available elsewhere, having it all in one place and at the click of a mouse (rather than flipping through pages of a book) is much more convenient to me. (Also fun!)

He does provide touring plans...under "sample tours" for each park...along the left side near the bottom of the "vacation articles" section. (It did take using the site a few times to get the hang of his "filing system" but now it's a breeze.)

Admittedly, I haven't tested his touring plans yet, or any others for that matter, but plan to. I like the fact that his are the only touring plans I've seen that don't have you bouncing back and forth from one side of the park to the other--which would just waste WAY too much time with my three kids--not to mention the worn out feet...their legs are way too short for all that back-tracking!

I do think it will be better once he has the photo tours up. The photo tours that he has completed are very nice--especially for someone who has never been/seen something in particular, or the entire park in general. JMO

I'm trying it too. He has one novel idea that I've seen nowhere else: go to the waterparks 4-5 hours before closing. This is so different from the normal assumptions. According to Mike, there is a mass exodus of people after 1:30. This rings true to me, because my family only spends 4-5 hours in a waterpark. I'm thinking about changing my itineraries because of this.

I've found TourGuide Mike to be very helpful. Yes, it does narrow down articles based on the vacation survey you complete, but there's also an option to view all articles if you want to make sure you're not missing anything. The site is somewhat difficult to navigate due to the massive amount of info, but once you use it a few times you'll get the hang of it. He does have some different ideas that I haven't really seen in any guidebooks with regards to touring and viewing Spectro and Illuminations. I won't mention them here so as not to spoil it for those who are purchasing. ;) Since he's a former CM and professional tourguide, I have confidence in his touring plans. His tips for dining are excellent as well and make sense. Access formerly expired 14 days after your trip but he's now extended it to 60 days. I believe right now he's also working on special access for those who take multiple trips. I agree that his site needs some work here and there, but he makes it clear that it's a work in progress and I admire his diligence. At $15, I feel it's a good value and would recommend it.:D

I bought TGM before our last trip and I enjoyed it. I look at it like this- we normally buy the most recent Birnbaum's or Unofficial Guide (or both) before every trip- this cost about the same, and has the benefit of being interactive and up to date.

TGM had some really good advice for how to handle the parks to avoid crowds. We had been to WDW several times already, but we were making our first trip during peak season and I was pretty nervous about crowds. TGM doesn't print out a step-by-step itinerary for you, but it does give you a list of when is the best time to ride each ride. Then, when you read the article about the ride, he gives you detailed tips for the ride. These include not only crowd management, but best seats, things to look for, etc.

We followed TGM's advice very closely during our Easter-week trip and we had no long waits at rides. We went on everything we wanted without any problem. So I'm happy with the value of what we got.

I must admit to being annoyed when I got an e-mail shortly after the trip saying "Good-bye, your access is being cut off," but I see now that Mike has responded to that complaint somewhat by stretching it to 60 days. Not a big deal, though- we cut and pasted all the important info we wanted to take with us on the trip and, of course, still have it. But, really, once you have used them, his strategies are simple enough that you will remember them.

I subscribed to it for planning my second trip to WDW. My first trip I bought several books, visited DISboards, made use of all available info (I'm a serious researcher and planner). First trip very nice, but felt like we missed so much. This trip I still used all available info to plan, including TGM - which offered info that I have only seen on TGM. I used his recommendations on best times (for everything, parks, rides, shows, etc.) and I am pleased to say that we never stood in a line for longer than 3 minutes (with the exception of autograph lines), mostly zipped on without a wait, rode and saw everything we wanted to see, and had great viewing spots of all the parades, fireworks, etc. Granted, we were there during a less crowded time, but I felt like we got so much more out of this trip, mainly because of his recommendations, so I think it was worth every penny.

Thanks for the opinions. Looks like I need to spend more time with it. The photo tours sound like a great idea. Add some well done video of the attractions and then I can start to see it being worth $25.

Has anyone constructed a plan using his template and methods? I also wonder how it might compare to touringplans.com (which would be a pretty expensive experiment).

I hope Mike has polished up his customer relations skills. I had a similar experience with another internet travel site (not DU) that I asked for a quote on FTP and they wanted to charge me so much per day of my trip for a plan. When I responded that I didn't relaize there was a charge, they got very defensive, explaining why it worth it. That wasn't my point, I was just expressing surprise that a quote request would cost money.

I also subscribed to Tourguide Mike and was quite disappointed. I emailed him and he was very, very defensive about his site. I tried to explain, in detail, what I thought the problems were (no search, difficult navigation, incomplete or non-existent information, etc.). He offered to refund my money but I passed. I appreciate his efforts and do believe that a site like Mike's would be a welcome addition to the info available elsewhere since it's all in one place. And for newbies, it is a good place to start. But, his site needs a lot of work in order for it to become user friendly.

I found Tour Guide Mike before I found anything else. (never been to WDW before) I gladly paid the $24.95 & even after discovering all the other great sites - like this one - I still love my TGM!!! Yes, it does take some getting use to. Yes, it is still in progress. But I signed up last month & the additions he has made to it since are a lot. He admits he's not quite finished, but I can tell he is almost done. The picture tours that he is currently working on are great for someone who has never been there before! And he does listen to his users & makes adjustment to improve the site. He has just extended his "window" for after the park visit to 60 days. (which makes me very happy, as I would not have been able to give my feed back in the previous 14 day window) He now has special prices for multiple visits. And now, it's even on SALE! (But I'm not sorry that I paid full price. I find it's worth it) He's also added an Express Planning Guide for those who don't have a lot of time to plan. Though I can't comment on this new feature as I still have 6 months to go.

I really like that I have everthing in one place. TGM even sends me email reminders so I don't forget to call for reservations, etc. (great for those absent minded ones like me) I don't know how he is via direct email, but I find that online, the site is fun to read & very friendly in tone. It is like having a personal assistant. I LOVE MY TGM!:bounce: Well, I guess that's my two cents. ;)

I'm new here but I just wanted to add that I got TourGuideMIKE when we were first thinking of a trip to WDW a couple of months ago and I love it! It's definitely best for people like me, who have little or no experience with WDW. I'm not sure how useful it would be for real WDW veterans. I've enjoyed being able to read a fairly detailed article on nearly every attraction and restaurant, all in one place. His itinerary suggestions seem to be quite helpful as well.

I'd say it's best for people who use TourGuideMIKE, a sweeping and sometimes generalized resource, to also use sites like DIS where more specific, unique issues (like what type of stroller to use for your kid, where to find the best vegetarian food, etc.) can be fully addressed.

I'll post again after our trip to report on how Mike's itinerary suggestions worked out for us!

I LOVE TGM!

Have said it before and say it again: I recommend it wholeheartedly. I have been to WDW over 5 times and still found the site to be very informative, having more information than what you merely find on boards. And what is best, it is written by a professional tour planner, not just anyone who likes WDW.

It is fun to use and the author is very polite and receptive.

One more thing in TGM's favor: I e-mailed him twice with very specific questions about our itinerary, and he responded quickly with very good answers. I had thought maybe he wouldn't want to deal with such questions, but he was gracious and helpful.

I'm glad I started this thread. My initial impressions were less than impressive, but from the number of positive responses it looks like I owe it to myself to give this more time. Thanks again for the comments.

ww52-
This is a good thread!
Just a clarification, I want to point out that altough Mike was extremely defensive to the point of being obnoxious in my initial contact with him, he did apologize and realize WHAT I was criticizing about his product and did offer to let me use TGM free of charge, even though I never asked him for a refund. Our communication ended on a positive note. I plan on using TGM for our trip and I will be objective when I review it upon our return:)

He is VERY enuthusiastic about TGM, and truly DOES listen to customer suggestions on how to improve the features found on this site. I do think $15 that is currently being offered is a good deal, even for a one-time use.

I'm also using TGM to plan our first trip back to WDW since 1991. I have the Passporter, Unofficial Guide, Disney for Families, DDL, and DIS--they all compliment one another as I plan.

I am very pleased with TGM. I especially appreciate that he gives great tips on what to expect from attractions that might be intense for children (you punch in the number in your party and their ages when you register). My girls are 7 and 5 and this is going to be a BIG experience for them. It's very nice to have specific information to know what to expect and so my dh and I can make decisions about what they should or shouldn't ride OR to know that their is just a brief period of darkness during a certain ride and the rest of it is fine, etc.

I emailed Mike on Mother's Day afternoon to ask a question and he responded within the hour. He followed up with me for several days and was very courteous.

Anyway, just wanted to share my experience (so far) with TGM. :)

I got in on the mousesavers preview and have enjoyed TGM!!!! I think that we must take into consideration that he is a human being, and not some huge corporation. When someone leaves negative comments he takes them very personally. I think we all would in his situation. It is hard to take constructive criticism sometimes. I am happy to hear that while some conversations started out heated, that TGM does try to make it right in the end. I will continue to use his website with the understanding that he is only one man, and he is human. I look forward to the new photo tours and articles that are being published. Renessa

Would getting this be of help with taking a 3 year old? You know with that age anything can happen.

I think TGM would help you a lot with a three year old. Granted my kids are older (8 & 10), but you can cater his advise for little ones. While I browse his site, he often gives special hints for taking little kids. What rides might be scary. Even what attractions may have sudden things that might scare them or what might just try their patience. He will recommend rides & events based on the age also. I would highly recommend TGM to help you plan your trip!
