Tour Guide in Athens, Greece for Kids??

I am researching private tours in Athens, Greece. Any recommendations from anyone for a guide/driver that was great for kids? Two of my kids love the Percy Jackson books so I was hoping to find a tour that would show them some of the sites of interest from those books. I tried a google search but could not find anything. Thought I would check here and see if anyone had a good experience. We would like a driver and a guide- someone to take us around and also into the historical sites.

What a great idea -- my daughter would love it, too. But it doesn't appear that a tour company has thought of it yet! (hmmm....great business opportunity for someone somewhere...)

I said the same thing to my husband last night... that if we knew someone in Greece, they would be smart to do tours based around those books!! I found that same blog. I think I might make a list of some of the characters and important sites in the books and then just message some of the companies and see if they can make sure we see those places. Thanks for the help!

Yes, I need to start emailing, too. I wish some of them would post their prices so i could get a rough idea. The port adventures from Disney that are a private tour are over 1000 for a four hour tour. Ouch. But (unless I read it wrong!) they are much less expensive in Ephesus, so I am thinking of booking that one.

And my daughter already has some ideas for places she wants to see. I guess I ought to read the books myself to see what they have in them!

But seriously, Percy Jackson is a Disney/Hyperion franchise. You'd think DCL would be all over that??

on a non DCL cruise we had a "semi private (exclusive)" tour (through the cruise line) - the price was higher than the "standard" tours with much smaller group so it was easier to get everyone corraled and stay "on task"

I do not remember our guides name nor the tour company that she was with .. so I am of no help, but I wanted to pass this on....

You should watch "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" before going. Our guide was just like the father in the movie --Was an expert on whatever he was talking about and .... "this word comes from the ancient Greek word ______ meaning ..." And she was like a protective "mother hen". It was a good excursion (museum, Parthenon, Olympic stadium and more) . In talking with other people on the ship about their excursions, this was a common theme in the guides.

That price is nuts. You can get a full day tour in Athens for about half that. I paid 400 euros for our tour last year. I went with PK Travel. I believe it's a father/son operation. They were awesome.

Some approximate quotes from the company I suggested above, does work out cheaper than DCL.

They said these are 2013 prices 2014 TBC,

The pick up from your ship, the full day Athens tour, and the drop off at the port will cost 230 Euros.
The pick up from your ship, the full day Athens & Cape Sounion tour, and the drop off at the port will cost 250 Euros.
The pick up from your ship, the full day Athens & Ancient Corinth tour, and the drop off at the port will cost 250 Euros.
The pick up from your ship, the half day Athens tour, and the drop off at the port will cost 150 Euros [total duration 5 hours].
I would suggest starting the tour as soon as you disembark so as to avoid the beat of the heat and the crowd at the site of the Acropolis.
Entrance fees to the archaeological sites, licensed tour guide, and food are not included in the prices.


I have been to all of these, Greek expert! So Union IMHO isn't worth going, also beaches in Athens area are poor, Corinth is worth going.

Hi there,
I wrote the blog post referred to above about Percy Jackson and our Mediterranean cruise. I'm happy to answer any questions that anyone has about our experience. We used Private Greece Tours in Athens and paid 250 Euros for our family of 4 - car/driver for 8 hours. Our driver wasn't a private guide so he just transported us between sites in the air-conditioned car (which was very welcome in August) and waited for us to finish. Entrance fees to the sites were not included in the price. Our Athens pass was 12 Euros each - the children were free. (prices were for summer of 2011)

You will love this cruise - it's a beautiful part of the world. Just be prepared for the heat if you are going in the summer!
