Hi everyone,

As I mentioned on the show a few weeks ago, I've recently been diagnosed with diabetes. My friend Geoff is doing a fund-raiser here in Orlando called the "Tour de Cure" to raise money for The American Diabetes Association. He plans to ride 50 miles during the event which takes place on Feb 28.

If you're so inclined, I'd appreciate it if you could show Geoff some support and help him reach his fundraising goal. CLICK HERE to go to his fund raising page.

Thanks,
Pete

I am a bit behind on my podcast listening...sorry to hear this Pete. We support Tour de Cure folks here in CA and also Team Type 1. DS9 has Type 1 and just learned this week that all of the folks on the Team Type 1 Cycling team wear the same insulin pump that he does. Team Type 1 and Nick Jonas...pretty exciting.

At any rate, good luck in your work to control your Diabetes. It is hard but once you get started, I think you will see that some small changes can often make a big difference when you have Type 2. We're cheering for you Geoff :cheer2:

are you riding? and best of luck, my mom is dealing with this, they told her if she got down to her goal weight she might very well come off the Meds..........not much chance of that happening. but i dont gripe at her.......... i always say "you paddle your canoe and i'll paddle mine". i do not know you so i do not know if that is an issue.

good luck to the team! great cause. My dad was just diagnosed before our December trip (great timing, huh?).

I have to say, in some ways, this diagnosis has been a real blessing. It's forced me to really take a much greater interest in what I eat, to watch what (and when) I eat, and to start exercising. In just a few weeks I've been able to make some good strides in getting my blood glucose levels down (still not where they should be, but 'baby steps'). There was also so much I didn't know about diabetes (and still don't) - but the more I learn, the better I'm able to start making smarter decisions on how I take care of myself.

I'll be honest, I haven't missed any of the 'comfort foods' that were such a staple of my diet for so long (namely sugar - I've been a sugar fiend since I was a kid). I really thought that was going to kill me, but alas - I don't even miss it.

Geoff is a great guy and he routinely participates in things like this for all sorts of causes. He's one of those people that likes to feel like he's giving back. So, any support you can show for this is really appreciated.

Thanks,
Pete

Pete you know your many friends here are always impressed with your candor and honesty.
I am not so sure I would be as brave to reveal myself as you do, but I know you find comfort and are happy to do so.
Hopefully others will respect this and not see it as a way that they have a right to information or answers.

My FIL has been dealing with diabetes for the last couple of years and I know that he similarly has found the discipline of the lifestyle changes easier than he imagined :)

I have noticed the same thing. Once I decided to give up fast food, pop )or soda), sugary foods, and things that can be classified as junk I never really craved them. For the first month or so I would smell something like Berger King and really want it. Now, I have no desire.

I think we re-adjust to the diet we are naturally supposed to have and we stop craving sweets and fatty foods once we get used to leaner meats, fruits, and vegetables. That has been my experience at least.

Pete,

You'll be amazed at how easy it is to control your sugars in this day and age. When I was diagnosed with Type One 27 years ago, I was the first patient at my hospital to use a new type of insulin.

Now - I've worn an insulin pump for 10 years and just started wearing a Continuous Glucose Monitor!

As has been previously stated - baby steps are the key.

Good luck sir!

Wooo Hooo Team Type 1!!!!

It can get frustrating sometimes, but I know you have a great support system. Small steps are the easiest to adjust to both mentally and physically. Your body will need time to adjust as much as your brain.

And don't forget, we're the naturally sweet people--we don't need to eat sugar to be that way.

We will be riding again this year in the 25k Tour de Cure in Fairbanks, Alaska. It's on June 5th in case any of you want to fly up for it... :thumbsup2
