If you are going to keep large amounts of cash in the house, you need to create a LOCKED AND HIDDEN place to put it. The key is to make it impossible to quickly access the cash without tools. Hiding takes away the temptation of the casual grab, and locking it slows down those who are actually looking for it. If you are going to keep your money in a bedroom drawer, buy a combination lock box, drill holes in the bottom of it and bolt it into the drawer-bottom: it's a bit conspicuous to casually walk out of someone's house carrying a dresser drawer!
I learned this when I was burgled a couple of times, and each time the thieves had gone through my lingerie drawer. I was creeped out by it, but the cops explained to me that "the underwear drawer" is such a common hiding place that it's the first place that thieves look for cash and weapons, and that they are easy to find just by feeling/listening for the sound of something other than fabric as your hands move through it (They also told me that if you live in a place where burglary is an issue, keep a couple of bills in a narrow mouthed glass container (mason jar is optimal) in an obvious place -- as bait. It needs to be small enough to get your hand into, but a bit difficult to get your hand out of, so that you'll have to grab the jar with your other hand to get your hand free. The point of this is to get good fingerprints. You would think that burglars would make it a point to wear gloves, but the cops told me that more often than not, they don't. The issue is differentiating the burglar's prints from everyone else's -- thus the point of the bait jar.)
