Tortola...Is it worth getting off the ship??

We did the island tour on our 2009 cruise. The scenery is breathtaking! The beach break was nice, short, but nice! It was a perfect tour for my younger DD who is disabled, and for me with a bum knee. We were back at the ship in plenty of time for DH and I to walk into town, checking out Sunny Caribe for spices, and Pussers (for their rum!).

Thank You... I have heard that scenery is breathtaking. I wanted to do something easy while in Tortola. I'm sure the Virgin Gorda is beautiful , maybe our next trip there.. ( Hopefully there is a next trip there)

Mmmm! Their painkillers are excellent!

I was looking at getting some famous Caribbean Rum while in Tortola!! ;)

There supposedly is a little rum distillery near where the tour stops for the beach break. I wanted to try to find it, but didn't feel comfortable leaving the tour group. So DH and I decided to find Pusser's! It's about a 15 minute walk from where the ship docks. Definitely try the painkiller!!!!

I just did this excursion less than 2 weeks ago!! You drive around the island in an open air bus. The driver shows you some great views. I found the info about Tortola and the surrounding islands the most interesting, although a lot of it was not that interesting. I got 2 or 3 pieces of info about the islands that made it worth the cost of the tour, but I like to learn obscure things about places...

Skyworld is a very small restaurant at the top of a hill, you walk to the roof and get a good view of the surrounding islands. I felt sorry for the owner because noone bought any food or drink. You have to pay to use the restroom.

I loved Cane beach, especially since I have small kids. Very calm and tranquil, a perfect beach break.

It only takes 2-3 hours and was not too expensive. I am glad we did it. We were back on the ship by lunchtime and I felt we got a decent sense of a nice little island. I would have liked to do Virgin Gourds but didn't think it was appropriate with 2 little kids and an elderly person. Maybe next time...

I have seen the excursion for Virgin Gorda.. I also read somewhere on the DIS boards from numerous people that the climb up from the Bath is steep. Now, as much as I would like to do this, I'm not keen on climbing a steep rocky hill. Last time I did that I came out with a broken wrist...is this true?? What about the island tour...as anyone done it.. I see it goes to Skyworld..Does anyone know about that?

I can't think of any reason you wouldn't get off the ship it it's in a port you've never visited before!

We just did the island tour with Pusser's Landing stop, the only DCL tour we took on last month's WBTA (the rest were all privately arranged). Due to my DM's mobility issues, we decided to forgo the Baths, which was fine with me (although everyone said they were beautiful). The open-air bus was ok, and the driver was a sweetheart; it was a perfectly nice way to spend the morning. Tortola didn't strike me as a place I'd seek out for an extended vacation, but it was definitely worth seeing once or twice.

First time Disney cruise and cruisers and can't wait! There are five of us celebrating daughter's health...year and a half cancer free! Sailing Jan. 16, 2016 to Tortola, St. Thomas and Castaway Cay. Granddaughters are 4 and 9. Daughter would like to do dolphin swim and possibly 9 yr old. Nine yr old wants to kayak and sounds like we all would like to snorkel. I'm thinking of dolphin swim at Tortola and snorkeling/kayaking at Castaway Cay. Any suggestions?

Hope you have a magical cruise. party:Thanks for the reality check.

Tortola is the DCL Caribbean port I want to see the most. We picked our cruise next year specifically because it stops at Tortola. Here's hoping it all works out - can't wait.

Tortola was one of my favorite ports. I can't wait until the next time I visit that island.

Were there certain excursions that you did and would recommend, or did you just do your own thing? Would love to hear what you enjoyed!

Another I just can't imagine going somewhere new and possibly never again and not getting off the ship.

The Virgin Gorda excursion was probably the best we've ever done thru DCL! It is amazing.

I totally agree with this one! Virgin Gorda was incredible! I loved hiking around the rocks and jumping from the rocks to the crystal clear water was a blast! I got some great pictures too!

So when DCL says the Virgin Gorda excursion is for 5+, is that a firm age that won't allow us to book our 4 year old on it or is it just suggested?

Absolutely get off the ship in Tortola. In 2009 we did a private tour to Virgin Gorda. It was an amazing day. We chartered through Patouche Charters. With them, you enter through the water and do not have to to the steep walk up and down. From what I remember, it is the only company that does this. WELL WORTH IT!!!
