Just got off the Fantasy and since I have learned so many great tips on this site, I wanted to give back. One thing I have noticed is the lack of great info on Tortola.

At first, disney only gave one option for the Day at the Baths. This was early in the morning. Very close to the cruise, I noticed an afternoon slot became an option. I switched to the afternoon. There are pros and cons to this decision (at least during this cruise).

1. I assumed wrongly that my kids would have free reign of the ship (pools) during the morning. Wrong. Disney is basically shut down until noon (Donald pool and Aquaduck closed). No characters until mid-afternoon. Basically it is similar to going to a mall when all of the stores are closed (except more sun). First time I have ever complained to Guest Services. I would have stuck with the morning session if I was aware of this issue.

2. People I spoke to said that they could not even complete the Baths excursion in the morning due to the number of people. People enter the Baths in both directions which causes an issue. In the afternoon session, this was not an issue.

3. I saw a number of older people that really struggled with the walk back. How it works: you take a short walk down to the first beach. You enter the baths and end up at a second beach. You must then take a longer walk up a different trail back to the meeting spot. I did not struggle with the walk, but I saw several people complaining about the difficulty of the hike. I know I was the only one in the group who would want to return to the Baths.

4. At least from the people I spoke to: the Disney Tortola excursions are just too short. You need to go with an independent company. Even with the Jost Van Dyke beach excursion (which I heard is beautiful), you leave very early in the morning and are back by noon. And it takes a long time to get to and come back from the excursions.

5. As the cruise director mentioned, there is not much to see on foot.

It was a great trip (first Fantasy trip after three Dream trips), any questions, just ask.

We book tonight and the Baths is the Tortola excursion we want to do. What do you recommend? Morning or afternoon? Do you still recommend it through Disney? It will be our first time on the Fantasy. If you do the afternoon excursion, what time did you leave and return to the ship? I've read a bunch of reviews and pieced together what you just said: there is not enough time spent there. But I am hesitant to schedule with an outside charter due to time issues. I am paranoid that we would miss the ship! We are a family of 4, pretty active including kids.

We left at 1 and got back at 515. If i did it again, I would go with Speedys (my wife sounds like you and is nervous not doing Disney approved). It leaves at 9 and gets back at 330. The Fantasy does not leave until 545. Plus that includes lunch and is much cheaper. If you go with Disney excursion, I would not wait for them to tell you when to go into the Baths, I would just go. There is just not enough time. Based on crowds, I think afternoon is the preferred time.

Well, I booked at midnight last night and the only option was the half day Baths in the morning. I am trying to look on the bright side in that 1. we will still get to see/experience the Baths ( just not for very long) and 2. we will back on the ship by early afternoon on a port day so hoping for slightly lower crowds lol!

We did the 1/2 day excursion that left in the morning. It was awesome and beautiful, a can't miss. With that being said, it was absolutely rediculously too short. I think we were only at the beach for 30 minutes before we had to leave to go up the path back to the transportation. The path back up was slow going because there was so many people. If there is any way you can do a private excursion, I would. There was a group from our cruise meet that did a private excursion that I wish we could have done instead.
