We just got back from Disney's first sailing to Tortola on the Magic Apr 25-May 2, 2009.

After reading favourable reviews on the Baths in Virgin Gorda, we decided to do that as an excursion. Disney cruise line offers the excursion only for ages 5 and up at a price of $68 or $89. We decided to do the excursion on our own not only to save some money but so that our 3 year old could come with us.

Once you leave the ship, it's maybe a leisurely 10-15 minute walk to the ferry dock. Just follow everyone else walking into the small "downtown" area and continue walking along the water. It's only a few minutes walking past the downtown area and everyone walks there, so i don't think anyone will need a taxi.

We bought ferry tickets from Speedy's (speedysbvi dot com) which were $38, not $30 as stated on their website. Children under 5 are free which was a bonus. The boat didn't arrive at the dock until maybe 5 minutes before the scheduled time so don't worry if you don't see the boat at first. I guess there's a Smith's ferry as well, but the 10:30am departure time worked well for us, and on Tues and Thurs the boat returns at 2:45pm (this is not shown on the website), which gave us enough breathing room if we missed it as there is also a 3:30pm ferry. Cruise boarding time was a relatively late 6:00pm. If it's any consolation, if you do miss boarding the cruise ship Speedy's also has a ferry to Charlotte Amalie, so you could meet up with the cruise ship the next day quite easily.

The ferry docked in Virgin Gorda after a 30 min ride, and Speedy's has a open air bus that is a 5-10 min ride to the actual baths. The bus ride both ways is included in your ferry fare.

Entrance to the baths was $3 per person, and you can take a short walk down to the beach on a dirt path, or i guess take the "devil's" route which we did not do. There's a decent enough looking restaurant at the entrance and a snack bar on the beach.

We entered the rock formations from the beach, and our just turned 3 year old was fine walking through the various areas, although we didn't go from end to end. He could climb up and down the ladders himself, with relatively little help (just dad there to catch him if he slipped), and there was a part you need to hold a rope for balance with, which he walked with me holding his hand and my other hand holding the rope with no drama. He actually liked hanging out in the shallow water pools, so i'm not sure what all the fuss was about not being 5 or older to do the excursion. We didn't feel the need to go end to end so there may be other more tricky areas (i doubt it), but don't let that prevent you from bringing your young kids! It was definitely worth it, and i'm a bit of a jaded traveller having been many places and countries before.

Snorkelling was decent enough, and the beach was small but uncrowded when we were there.

By the time we left the beach around 2:00pm, the Disney cruise excursion was just getting there, so i'm glad we went on our own and got to be at the beach during the best part of the day. The other Disney bath excursion was there much earlier in the day at the sacrifice of sleeping in. The shuttle bus to the ferry dock leaves the beach entrance 30 minutes before the ferry is to depart the dock at Virgin Gorda. We arrived maybe 2 minutes late at 2:17pm and the bus was already gone. Luckily, there were other drivers there who could take you in a pinch. Although the drivers weren't with Speedy, at the approval of the one driver (i guess they all work for the same guy) they gave us a free ride to the ferry dock (we tipped a few bucks though!). 2:45pm sharp the ferry left for Tortola. Not much for shopping in the town, better off waiting for St. Thomas.

Later we exchanged stories and found out the Disney bath excursion had a boat that left right from the cruise dock, but on the way back it had to dock at the ferry dock since the water near the ship was too rough. I believe lunch was at the restaurant near the bath entrance which you can go to yourself (or like us have a big breakfast and wait until you get back on the boat to have a late lunch).

All in all a great excursion, the baths were really interesting and had great photo ops, and our 3 year old not only easily survived the trip he enjoyed hanging out and playing inside the baths. Do yourself a favor and go and don't be afraid to bring the little ones!

Thanks for the great details!:thumbsup2 I have been researching "DIY" Baths for our upcoming August cruise. The excursion fee was just a little too steep for a family of 5 for a few hours at the beach!

Good to know about the bus ride being included in the ferry fare!

Is it worth bringing our own snorkel gear there? Were there fish near enough to shore to see?

Do you think tweens and teens will like this? I hope they like the rock formations, but the water may be a little too mild for my sons.

Do you think we could go there on our own in the early afternoon? We're doing the Dolphin Encounter in the a.m. & were debating if this could be done on our own.

Serious question: Would a clutzy adult be able to handle the Baths? What kind of shoes would you suggest? We have 3 adventurous ones & one clutz in our group--me. I'm serious. I have no sense of balance & this slows me down in situations that seems slippery or :scared1:

Our other question is a safety question about losing kids. My 8 year old is a little daredevil & likely to take off ahead (thinking he's safe) but not remembering his DM may need to go slower. I'm worried he'll get lost from us too easily.

Thx for sharing your experiences..........I think I'm going to try it on our own!
:goodvibes

I brought the snorkel gear and i thought it was worthwhile, although that was until i went snorkelling at Castaway Cay. At CC, past the lifeguard station far out on the right side of the snorkelling area, we saw hundreds of fish in a school...very impressive. What's good about the baths is that you only have to go out maybe 30 feet to see fish, whereas at CC I swam (without flippers) at least 15 minutes to get back from the school of fish area.

I think all ages will enjoy it, everyone else there really raved about it both kids and adults.

It's quite a long journey to go there and back and have time to see everything as the roundtrip travel time is probably 15min walk + 30 min boat ride + 10min taxi + 5min walk to beach = 2 hour roundtrip. The good thing is that the ship all aboard is a late 6:00pm, and as the cruise director said "bring a camera since it's a beautiful sight to see the ship sail over the horizon"!

The best analogy i can give for what skill or fitness is required is the amount you would need to do everything on a kid's playground...seriously! A playground where you climb up tires or a plank using a rope for balance or where you climb over a half dome of bars is probably pretty accurate as to the maximum mobility required. I was ready for a lot worse based on the impression i was given, and it was really nothing that my rambunctious 3 year old couldn't handle. About 100x worse was carrying my then 2 year old pretty much the whole way up Diamond Head in Oahu in the hot sun.

For shoes, water shoes would be nice, i just went barefoot for the water and used sandals for the dry parts, although like i mentioned before, we didn't explore the entire length of the baths.

You can google and find a map of the inside of the baths, but you don't need it. Everything is sort of enclosed, so it's not like there's too far to get ahead. If there's more in your group don't worry, it's not a maze. Anyways, i recommend checking it out.

Hi AlohaX...thank you so much for posting this thread...we have an almost four year old, who is also excluded from the DCL tour to the baths...it seems that he will be fine doing it, but we also have a littler guy... he is twelve months. Do you think he'd be okay to come with us? We have a pretty good hiking backpack that he can sit in during the walking/climbing part...any problem with taking him on Speedy's, or the shuttles to the beach or down the path to get to the bath's? Unfortunately, i can't leave him in flounder's reef for the time we are off the boat! Thanks!
What did your family end up doing in St. Thomas?

Ok, first thing...if you have a hiking backpack you're probably fit and have done a lot more adventurous things than simply walking down to the beach, so whatever you decide i'm sure you can handle it. I certainly wouldn't bring a hiking backpack onto the cruise just for a trip to the baths - just use a lightweight fold up stroller for the walk to the ferry and have someone from the cruise watch it while you go into the baths...there were 2 other families with kids from DCL who did this excursion on their own as we did and it was the first sailing to Tortola! After this thread, i suspect there'll be a lot more interest from people who are excluded from DCL's excursion due to the age limits.

No issues with a little guy on speedy's or the taxi. When you first enter the baths you probably have to take off the backpack just for the entrance as it is quite small, otherwise you should be good to go...just watch your little guy's head!

As for St Thomas, we just shopped and stuck around the town as their Carnival festival was going on at the time.

Enjoy your trip!

My parents are going on the cruise with us. Is there a way to get to The Baths beach without climbing thru the rocks? I'm afraid it will be too rigorous for them but I would like them to be able to see it and enjoy the beach. Should we just skip it?

well, the stroller i was going to bring is not really lightweight, but it's great for him...it's a bugaboo and i can't be talked out of bringing it...the baby sleeps in it so great, as opposed to an lightweight one which he screams his face off in! If i do bring that to the ferry, who from the cruise would watch it? Do they have DCL reps around, or are you talking about having strangers watch it? I am confused. I don't want it stolen, as it's a lifesaver for me, and expensive, too.

We are within driving distrance to the ship, so bringing the backpack is not a big deal, it will take up some space in the cabin, but other than that, it's not a hassle. I thought it might be handy to have in St. Thomas and anywhere we are going that might be a pain to have the stroller...but on second thought, maybe i am packing way too much! I just hate to get there and think, darn, i should have brought the pack!

Wow! Thank you so much for this recap! This is the excursion we wanted to do on Tortola day on our upcoming cruise, but now after reading this... I think it sounds easy just to take it in on our own.

Thanks so much!

We just took the dirt path down to the beach which was as challenging as walking in a crowded mall. From there, they can enter the Baths and go as far as they feel like, or simply head back to the beach. We never made it all the way through, but we don't feel like we missed anything. A great photo op is just inside the baths entrance so no matter your ability, you can get a good picture.

We're just as guilty of lugging our bugaboo around everywhere when our little guy was one. At the time it didn't seem so bad, but we haven't used it in a few years now that we have a small fold up McLaren. That said, i wouldn't bring the bugaboo, just carry him or the backpack would be much better. There's small square lockers the kind you might see at a waterpark, but you'd be hard pressed to put much in there. On the way there it's easy to spot other Disney cruisers, as they're a friendly bunch. We met another couple with a 4 year old who our guy played with who could have watched a stroller if we had brought one. Otherwise the beach wasn't that busy given that it's a far trek to get to, and it was exclusively tourists. Don't overthink it, whatever you decide will be fine!

I don't think it could be easier, and it's a relaxed day of sleeping in and a late boarding time. I also felt good that if disaster struck and we somehow missed the boat the Speedy's ferry could take us to St Thomas to meet up with the ship the next day.

Thanks so much for the helpful info and clear instructions - we would love to do this when we go.
