I was giving my Guide a referral today, and she mentioned the Massachusetts was one of the top states for DVC ownership. Being curious, I asked what are the top 5 in terms of members. Here they are, in order:
New York
New Jersey
Massachusetts
Florida
Pennsylvania

(anyone see any of the "naughty" states here?)
I thought the concentration in the northeast was interesting tho, since I know on this board we've got plenty of midwesterners from populous states too. And Mass coming in at #3 was interesting too, since this Commonwealth contains a mere 6 million souls; I would have thought someplace like Ohio, Michigan or Illinois would surpass us.

So interesting information in any case. I wasn't gonna be pushy and ask her to divulge the league table rankings or anything, so I just got the top 5.

Interesting info. I also saw a map that reflected those numbers while visiting SSR last December.
I would imagine several factors determine DVC population, including over-all popualtion of the state, distance from WDW, as well as average income.

Thanx for posting... :drinking:

AL use to be at the bottom -but I think in the last few years it has worked up....

well then there were states that hadn't sold any....

Well, we're in Indiana (nestled right between Ohio and Illinois), and as I look out my window I see about 2" of snow on the ground.

Now go look out your window.....

Does that explain it? :umbrella:

Not trying to sound sentimental or over dramatic but I bet you see a spike in membership from both NY and NJ after September 11th. I know that New Jersey had a huge casualty count, as did NY. I think it shook us all and made us take a look at our lives. I know it did for me. I lost a couple of friends. My self and many other fellow workers have taken more vacation time and a bunch of us recently joined DVC. I worked at ground zero from 9/11 to 9/14 and stayed deployed in Jersey City for 3 more months on 14 hour days 7 days a week. After that I made my 1st trip to WDW since I was 13. I think I knew at least 35 guys from the PD that went down with in 6 months. Maybe that's why, I don't know. Just my humble opinion. It sure was nice of Disney to give the Ground Zero workers the "Hero's Discount" I didn't use it, many of other guys I work with did, I felt kinda funny taking it, no hero here.
Cheers All :earboy2:

It was about 75 today here in Southern California. :sunny:

My guide also told me that a large portion of DVC owners are policemen, firemen, and nurses. She said they also saw a spike in ownership by these groups after 9/11.

(P.S...I'm a nurse.)

I though PA would be higher. Interesting that Mass is that high with the lower population as stated by Pumpkinboy. I know a few years ago they upgraded cash people from certain states as a sales enticement. We got bumped from a studio to a one BR and when I asked why, the CM said because we were from PA. It sold us...eventually.

I agree with both MrGrumpy and DivaMom - I live in NJ and being so close to 9/11 and actually being directly affected, it really put things into perspective and with my husband being a Police Officer, it played a big part in purchasing into DVC. I wonder what the rankings were before 9/11?

Thats very interesting.....I never hear anyone talking about DVC at headquarters (P.S. I'm a policeman) BTW...whats up with the DIS board having a smiley for firemen :firefight Teachers :teacher: and Nurses  but no police smileys

Caskbill - I beg to differ, but this MI person is seeing about 2 feet of snow. I would have thought MI would have been higher. Can I come stay with you? I could use a break from this snow ;)

I suspect that these rankings may have more to do with a combination of population and per capita income, and the geographic vacation preferences of the regions. NY, NJ, PA and MA have per capita income well above much of the rest of the country (CT being the highest), and they all have pretty significant populations (something CT does not have with just 3.3 million souls). Also, Northeasterners are habituated to heading for FL while perhaps those further west might head to TX or AZ (or perhaps Branson, a place relatively fewer Northeasterners know about). Note how many snowbirds and retirees from the Northeast end up in Florida, while Midwestern snowbirds are more split (having a number of different appealing options closer by than Northeasterners do).

It's interesting to speculate in any case. I am not sure that DVC has done any similar breakout of professions of its members (they have the address stuff, it's a bit harder to know what members do for a living). DVC is clearly a product aimed at middle class folks, particularly upper middle class folks with a bit of disposable income for frequent vacationing. The concentration of public sector workers like teachers, police and firefighters is interesting, tho many of the members I know are clergy, attorneys and finance professionals. My DW's secretary was the one who hooked us up with DVC, having been a member since the beginning.

Interesting to ponder...

And perhaps the snow is a factor too. We got more than 2 feet over the weekend, which was something of an insult having just come back from VB & VWL the previous Tuesday. They were complaining about the cold in Orlando where it was 50 (I realize it got colder after we left tho) to be greeted at Boston by 8 degree temps. Fortunately I had changed out of my shorts and sandals before boarding the Boston bound plane.;) The Midwest, especially the upper Midwest gets more than its share of snow too. I had always thought of Massachusetts as fairly temperate and NY and NJ near tropical, coming from Maine as I do. I'm sure plenty of Minnesotans and Michiganders would agree with me on that.

More will be from Florida as some of us from NY & NJ move south!!

Still waiting for word on DH's job in Florida!!!!

Everyone, please, cross your fingers!!!

Thanks,

Umm............how is the "crazy" smiley representative of a nurse? :magnify:

dont forget the largest market outside the staes is the UK

I'm a nurse and after transferring to the NICU and seeing more "stressful" nights our family vacations increased.
I'd also like to know why the crzy smiley is a nurse?
I wonder where Texas falls in the rankings?

I'm assuming this is referring to number of owners, vs the number of points. It would be interesting to see if both those categories would be the same. :drinking:
