Would it have been better if they had made a new park instead of new section in the old park?

If only..heck if they did a whole Disney afternoon theme land from the 90's with Rescue Rangers ( At least there's Gadget's Go Coaster) , TaleSpin , Ducktales , Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles..I'd never leave lol.
OOOOhhhhh they SOOO need to do this!!!

Yeah, Duck Tales and Rescue Rangers would have been way better than what they did. Disney Afternoon was awesome. Anyone remember that small cardboard cut-out style mini-area they had for it in the 90s? Loved that! I don't hate ToonTown, but I was super disappointed when it opened. I was around 10 years old and I remember it looking so cool on the ads, but it was a huge disappointment. Now, the trolley doesn't even run like it used to and everything looks faded. I don't think it needed to be another park (especially with DCA being built albeit poorly a decade later) since there's not enough space back there with the fireworks fallout and stuff, but I do think that now it needs to be updated to reflect what younger kids are now familiar with. Even Mickey Mouse's house looks very different to a kid watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse than it does in the parks. My oldest kid always get annoyed that it doesn't match.

Back in the day, that might have been a good idea, but would it stand the test of time. Most kids today probably have no idea about any of those shows.

The fact most my friends who are parents talk about it all the time I think it would be fun :) But it's just a pipe dream anyway lol

I suppose there are rides where the theme may be obscure. Who today really understand Mr Toad or Song of the South? Gadget's Go Coaster was built well after the character was retired. I think it's a cute ride and an understanding of Rescue Rangers isn't needed to enjoy the ride.

I remember when Paramount operated theme parks and named rides after their movies. I suppose a few people remember Top Gun, but naming a drop ride after Drop Zone (a movies that didn't even make its budget) probably doesn't stand the test of time. It probably doesn't matter as they ended up renaming those rides after selling out to Cedar Fair.

I believe my 12 year old is one of the rare kids that knows Splash Mountain was even based off a movie at all... and she's seen it (the movie) several times. Honestly, until I looked into the history of the ride, I had no idea either.

Thankfully I have a kid who takes rides as nothing more than rides. She knows they have a movie/story behind them, but doesn't think the ride/area is pointless if it doesn't pertain to current pop culture. She asked who Gadget was, and I explained that it was a cartoon from my youth (like Roger Rabbit, the story/record of it's a small world, Alice in Wonderland, and all the others she hadn't seen or known about), and she just took it at face value--cute theming and on to the next attraction.

I saw Song of the South the last time it was shown in theaters in the US. It's a little too toxic for any kind of rerelease except for a few clips.

A lot of ride theming really can stand on its own without knowledge of the backstory. I've never seen the cartoon with Mr Toad.

Yes! Loved that! I was 20 and just married, working (teaching preschool), and going to college. I would watch Disney Afternoon on my lunch break and I had a Rescue Rangers thermos for my coffee. When I graduated in 91 my parents sent us to DL for my graduation present and I had a great time posing with the cut outs. And remember the boat ride they turned into a Gummy Bear ride? I also believe I was the first Disbounder because I wore a blue shorts jumpsuit with yellow and blue socks and I had a Flounder pin on my collar. :)

Might be odd...but I remembered Toontown opening an our later. Is this still the case?

There are a few short clips of Aftertoon Town here in a family video from our 1991 trip (starting at about 1:15). We have several seasons of Ducktales and Rescue Rangers on DVD and my kids love them. :)

Nice! I forgot the sky baskets were still there too! I have the songs from Disney Afternoons on my Disney music playlist.
