From my DH and DD14!!! It's not what you think!!!

DH and DD14 and very creative-type people. They both go into minute detail when trying to explain an idea. Drives me CRAZY. What could easily be explained in under 60 seconds gets turned into a 5 minute (or longer) explanation. I GET IT!!! REALLY!! Just give me the Reader's Digest version, PLEASE!!! And don't repeat something you've already told me! My poor little feeble brain gets bogged down with too much information.

I am so frustrated, particularly with DH. And he is equally frustrated with me, because I try to get him to get to the point.

I know. I'm awful for not listening, right?

In our family we can discuss where we are going to eat for 30mins. :lmao:

You know you can't change who people are but you could come up with "cues" to let your DH know that you have had "enough" of the subject.
Have to come up with respectful ideas for both of you and of course weigh the conversation as a matter of importance.

For example, if you could care less what restaurant you go to then just say to them, you guys discuss it and tell me when you are ready.

Maybe with other things, you can ask questions when they are talking or something like that.

Detail is fun...Then again I just learned how to play Canasta with my sister because we are bored with Euchre.:rotfl:

OOOOO, I love Canasta!!

DH and I get upset with each other very often over this. He's an entrepreneur, always has an idea. I've been listening to his ideas for over 23 years. I've gotten to the point that I don't want to know anymore.

We decided last week when we went through this that he would try to keep it short, and I would try to listen better. I think we both flunked.

DD's DH and his dad are both like that.. I have never, ever heard people drag out the answer to a simple question for as long as those two can.. LOL

Example: "Is it supposed to rain tomorrow?"

The answer will be everything from tomorrows forecast to what is supposed to happen on the west coast to which areas of the country are in dire need of rain to the "Great Flood" of whatever to the likelihood of whether there was actually a "Noah's Ark"..:rotfl:

A simple "yes' or "no" would do nicely..;)

exactly!!!!

Ur DH and mine are brothers. If he wants me to send an email he will go into so much detail about the backstory that I kind of forget the reason of the conversation. It drives me crazy show me the trailer dont need the whole movie to understand.

I think that consideration is required on both sides - me, the listener, to try and do a better job listening, and to the talker, to realize when they have lost their audience and need to get to the point!

I found kindred spirits here! I figured I would get chewed up and spit out for disrespecting him by not listening. Aren't women supposed to use 5 times more words than men??? I would never shut up if talked 5 times more than he does! :rotfl:

My DD (16) is like that. She can go on and on when it omes to telling a story about something. If she tells me about something she s=did with her friends, not only does she tell me what they did but goes into each of her friends lives. And it goes on and on.

My DH says I do it too when I'm trying to explain things to him. In all fairness, it is usually only when it comes to Disney stuff because he doesn't have a clue about what goes into planning a trip and I try to involve him in the decision making.

LOL DS, who is now 29, was the same way. I used to say "how long is this going to take?" when he would start a story. Seriously.
He could take 4 hours to tell you what happened in a 2 hour movie :rotfl:

I'm the same as your DH and DD. My DH usually tries to get me to get to the point. But I think "where's the fun in that - I'm giving background here?" :rotfl:

However, I have never met anyone quite like DH for spinning out a tale. That man could talk the hind end of a donkey, as the saying goes.

Always has an idea, eh? You could be like my teenagers and announced that you have to go to the bathroom and leave never to been seen again.:lmao:

My DH is the same way. It will take him 30 minutes to tell me something, I can explain in less than a minute. Some of the guys I work with are the same way. I am a short sweet and to the point person.

hahaa I can relate OP my DH is the same way. Get to the point already. And I have a neighbor that will call and ask do you have suzie's cell number, i need to call her, i've been calling her house for a week but she's never there or returns my call. last year at silent auction I won a membership to someplace but I never got around to using it now I want to see if they'd take it back and give me a refund...blah,blah,blah. What the HECK who cares, No I don't have a cell phone number for Suzie I really don't need to know your whole history here. Geez she is so annoying, but I will say I'm more aware of when I ask people for something or say something to just come right to the point and not bore them with the details like said neighbor.

LOL! My mother is like this. She'll take a 30 second story and turn it into an 8 minute story. Edith Bunker comes to mind. :) She's always been like this so I'm used to it.

OMG, my mother is just like this! Everything is a story with her. And a long story. Involving people you never heard of and their various health problems. Like I really want to hear about your friend's husbands diabetic feet *just...eww*

Today its same song, second verse. She called to tell me that her hemoccult slides came back positive and they have scheduled a colonoscopy and endoscopy for next week. Okay, how long did it take you to read that--10 seconds? It took her 25 minutes to tell me about it. Even with me trying to cut to the chase "Oh it's positive, when are they scoping you?" no dice. Had to hear the whooooollle story which included her best friend losing 50-lb and what she had to eat at a restaurant. :sad2: Sheesh. Drives me crazy.
