Planning our 6th trip to WDW!
I have to go in the summer this time, which is all new to me. Wondering what the crowds are like and just how hot we can expect it to get. Will I be sorry and miserable?:wave2:

We did our first ever summer trip the last week of August. We really lucked out! The weather was beautiful and we kept missing those dreaded rain showers while at Disney!

The crowds were bearable at that time also, since most of the kids were back in school.

As long as you gear yourself with whatever the weather throws at you, it can be a great time to go!

We were there this past January and it was warmer at home!LOL As you can see we are from the "Great White North!"

The best advice for summer, Pace yourself! and drink plenty of water!

Have fun if you decide to go in the Summer!

Minnesotaluvsmickey - how warm were you on your other trips there? I note you are from MN - are you the classic if it's over 80 it's too hot MN (I am!). Then it might be too uncomfortable. Good luck with your planning. We too are going at not our ideal time of year - but we want to go!

We have been there twice the end of April when the coolest days have been 95+ and of course very humid. It was OK.......I can put up with that as long as I don't have to cook, vacuum or do any other dreaded household chores. There is a big difference between normal routine without air conditioning in Minnesota and a hot vacation in WDW!
Do you think it will be far hotter than 95 in July? What about crowds this time of year? I appreciate any help you can give!
Thank you!

We went the week before 4th of July one year (our last day in the parks was July 3rd). IT WAS HOT! ....but the parks weren't very crowded (with the exception of the water parks). Just remember that with the humidity when the temperature is in the 90's the heat index will be well over 100 degrees.

Minniesotaluvsmickey - I haven't been in the summer, so I'll move this up for hopefully more replies for you!! I'm impressed that you know how to do that quote thing - I have never figured that out  Good luck with getting some info!

Hi!! :)
I would say do not come to Disney in theSummer if you do not have to!!! It is very hot here in the summer!!! It rains every day almost and it is really hot like high 80's and 90's!!! I find a trend on these boards, when it is summer adn holidays you will find negative trip reports!! And I think it is because of the crowds and weather.

We have been in July & August and it has been pretty miserable. We are from North Carolina, so we are used to humidity and heat, but some mornings when we walked outside it was like the heat would take your breath away! By the time we got to the bust stop we were already prespiring and this was at 7am. It just made us want to forget walking all over the parks and just get back to the air conditioned room. When you pay that much for a ticket, you hate to miss out on anything. If you can go another time of year I would, but if not, July was actually a little better than our trip in August.

We have been at Disney twice in the summer (end of June) and I liked it better than April. The weather was in the 90's. The first year we were there it rained once for about 1 hour the whole week. The second time that we went (2002), it rained the whole entire week that we were there, except the afternoon that we left. The weather man said that there was record rainfall that summer...lucky for me. Just remember, you'll have a great time no matter when you go...you're at Disney.

Our last big family trip was in the second week of June. It wasn't so bad, really. Yes, it's very hot in the summertime, but it doesn't have to be uncomfortable. In past years I've noticed that the parks have set up cool mist stations where you can go and literally chill out. If you don't have a Squeeze Breeze, get one. They're really nice for standing in line, which is the worst thing for me in the heat.

Avoid the parks on EMH days because it gets so crowded. Check the Tip Boards to find out what rides have the shortest waits. Take it easy walking around; don't rush rush rush. Stay in the parks when it rains. Skip the afternoon parades; it really gets miserable staking out your spot on a hot day. Wear a hat to cover your face and eyes; I have one of those "bucket hats" and I can just quickly stash it in my bag on rides like Space Mountain. Enjoy the hotel pool as much as you can.

And don't forget the sunscreen.

Being from Mass I don't like it very hot, I took DD for a 3 day trip last June (OK every two year old must have dinner with Pooh for her birthday) and it was sooooo hot. The moment I got home I told my DH never again in June! We are spoiled and we love our fall weather.

A bit of a hijak here, but I had to mention this! Our son used to go to hockey camp in Winona in July and we took our DD on college visits in Minnesota in July. I've never been in Minnesota in July when it hasn't been nearly 100 with oppressive humidity. I'm not saying that's the norm, but it's definitely the norm when I've been there in July! ;) My DD's now at school in the Cities and she reports that it definitely gets cold there too. Seems like Chicago--extremely hot and extremely cold!

I think it will be miserable but that is just me! We go the beginning of May every year and that is really getting too hot for us. The last 3 Mays have been in the high 80s to high 90s! I would never go in the summer but it is all in what you can tolerate. That and the crowds must make it really bad!

Because both kids are in school now, we have to take our WDW vacation in the summer and we choose the last week of August through Labor Day. There are severe penalties at our children's schools for taking vacation during the school year -- the days out count towards unexcused absences, regardless of whether your child writes a trip report and catches up on homework, and if they exceed 7, could require repeating the year!!

But, I digress.

Yes August is hot and humid but very manageable. Even the bathrooms are air-conditioned so you can always find relief. Water is the only beverage we drink and have found we do well by drinking every 15 minutes or so. We had severe but brief T-storms in the afternoon, but no washouts. The mornings were all glorious. We prefer taking an afternoon break at the pool before heading to another park in the evening. We do take advantage of EMH and find it works beautifully as long as you are prepared to leave the park by 11 a.m. Also use fastpass to avoid waiting in long, hot lines. For the first time, I bought all of us Teva sandals and it makes a huge difference to have cooler feet. Also, buy and wear a really good hat -- not a fashionable one but a real desert-camo type floppy hat.

On our last trip, we took two friends who do not fare well in the heat, but by taking our advice, they did fine and even impressed themselves. Sitting here now in Boston with the cold blustery winds whipping outside my window, the heat of August at WDW is a happy memory for me and one I savor throughout our miserable winters.

Summer is the only time my family can visit WDW because I am a teacher. I've got to tell you, we went for a week last summer at the beginning of June and again for a week in the middle of August. August was a better time to go, weatherwise. Maybe it was a fluke, but it wasn't as warm , nor as rainy. If summer is your only choice, don't worry about it. Go and have a wonderful time!

Yes, 2 extremes here! Right now its 25 and windy! Our summers can be very hot and humid compounded by the fact that here in the north few homes are air conditioned! We have spent many a night trying to sleep in the basement. I think I can handle the heat in WDW in July because at least there you have plenty of air conditioned options. Guess I'll find out.....hope I'm right!

We went the second week of July and followed these simple rules and had a great time. One: Take advantage of early opening. Two: Leave the parks by 11:30 at the latest. Three: Drink water even if you are not thirsty. Four: Revive with a swim/nap in the afternoon. Five: Remember that even with the heat and humidity, it's better to be at WDW than at home! Oh, and I agree with the above poster about the Tevas. Sport sandals worked much better for us than sneakers!

I think it depends on you and your family. Our family can't stand it. We went once over Labor Day weekend and felt like we wanted to die. ;) We went over Mother's Day weekend this past May and they were having a heat wave. It was pretty hot and miserable. My daughter was moaning "I haaate the suuuun". We just don't handle the heat well and would be miserable in the summer. If you think that your family wouldn't mind, then go for it. We will never vacation to WDW in the summer ever again though.
