I went out to dinner tonight with my family. We had a lovely time, just the four of us chatting nicely over our plates. An average night, average conversation.

Why the heck was the family next to us so focused on our conversation? It was clear they were listening intently to our conversation, and believe me, it wasn't all that exciting.

What was that all about? Weird...I felt like we were under investigation, and I started getting paranoid that they knew the people we were talking about.

Anyone else ever had a similar experience?

Yes, just tonight my family and some really good friends (9) went to dinner in a lovely restaurant...the place was PACKED. After-all it is Friday night and we live on a Lake and the restaurant has all fish specialities = BUSY PLACE.
We had a blast, the waitress was fabulous, the food awesome. Now about 9pm they have a singer come on, on the complete other side of the restaurant BUT it is still the same room = HUGE ROOM. The singer was really good...but that being said to continue talking we had to talk a TAD BIT louder...well the table next to us had a couple (mid 50's)(that is what we are) and the man is just like totally staring at us...like just listening to everything I and my friends are saying (my friends back were to him and I was facing him)! I am so absolutely confused why this dude has to be completely focused on my friends/family. He just may as well come and sit with us. I leave to use the restroom and when I return, my MIL, says that man over there does NOT want us talking and whats to be able to hear the music...WHT :furious: ...

Well he can move his *** closer to the stage area!! Come on, this place is busy as anything and everyone is talking. No where does it say "SILENT" when the singer comes on!!!

We just ignored the dude and let me deal with it. The wife kept putting her hands behind her ears and pushing her ears forward...was that OUR sign to please be quiet......she looked like an idiot.

So that is my story!!! :goodvibes

I get people who like to lean and listen to my conversations all the time. And most of what my friends and I talk about isn't that thrilling. But we have a lot of inside jokes so we laugh and can get a little overjoyed and loud at times. It doesnt bother me as much as it did when I was younger. Now, if we find someone listening in or trying to follow what we are talking about, we will usually try to throw out something juicy. Even if its not true. ;)

:thumbsup2

Well, like tonight, I actually thought his life must be so borrrringgg to be paying so much attention to MY conversations.....I thought we were really entertaining this dude (and that he was bored by his wife)...turns out he wanted us QUIET!!! TUFF LUCK, Buddy..not gonna happen

Hmmm. OP-creepy indeed. Group with the couple wanting to listen to the entertainment; if I have to yell/talk loud over entertainment, I scoot out of there and go someplace where I'm not interfering with a performer. I'm assuming from your description that this was more than quiet dinner music. If someone had asked me to keep it down so they could enjoy a performer, I'd probably comply or leave asap.

Just to clarify, we were in the very farthest table from the singer...completely across the complete other side of the room. (The room is really HUGE) We were now having tea and coffee...intending on leaving with 15 mins or so...I was confused why this couple (if it was the singer they really really wanted to hear) they did not move their seat closer to the singer, because at this point, there were empty chairs closer and this couple had eaten and paid their bill. They were done and just sitting at this table next to ours...their table and ours were literally the farthest from the stage. Oh, and when I came to realize the man wanted to listen to the singer, I looked around and saw that EVERYONE else at their tables were talking just as loudly and as much as our group.

Oh well, I have come to realize in my old age...you cannot please everyone all the time.
