I had read so much on these boards about Tonga Toast at the Kona Cafe, I just had to have some. But, oh no! I was not impressed. I was so excited about it, then so disappointed. But perhaps I can help others.

I enjoy pancakes and french toast, but I really enjoy a hearty eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and toast meal. If this sounds like you, you may also find the Tonga Toast, well, disappointing.

To each, his own. I know there are lots of fans of Tonga Toast, so I have my flame suit on!

By the way, Kona did have great coffee!

What exactly is it like? I've also heard it's a not to be missed thing. I considered eating there last trip but didn't get around to it.

I'll have to second that opinion myself. I "just had to try" the Tonga Toast when DH and were there 2 years ago....after reading/hearing so much about it. I have to admit it was tasty, but so over-the-top sweet. By the 4th bite or so, I just couldn't take it anymore. I ended up sharing DH's b-fast with him. I'm glad I tried it, but I won't be getting it again.

waltdisneyworlddreamer: Tonga toast is slices of thick bread with banana stuffed between. Then the whole thing is dipped in egg batter (I believe) like regular french toast, then fried. THEN.....the entire thing is coated with cinnamon sugar (and I mean coated!) before being plated. Whew. Talk about a sugar high!

Lots of people love it and recommend it, but it just wasn't for me.

Count me in as someone who loves it! I think if you really like cinnamon flavored french toast or sticky buns, this is right up your alley. I really didn't think it was too sweet -- but I think that is my taste! :)

No Flames :) But I do have to say that I loved the Tonga Toast!

It is not something that I would normally eat; I tried it just because of all the reviews on this board.

While it was huge and sweet; I didn't think it was too sweet. My waiter was really good and he advised against putting syrup on the toast until I tried it as it was already really sweet. I had no intention of putting syrup on it; but it is nice that the waiter made that suggestion.

Kona was probably the best breakfast we had at Disney. I don't really remember what dh had (some type of eggs/meat); but we both had mimosa's and split a pressed pot of Kona coffee.

I will get pancakes, french toast or waffles if ordering off a preplated menu every time probably. (I get some eggs too when at a buffet.) But I find the Tonga Toast just too much. Two years ago I tried splitting it and another dish with my DH, but it was still too much. Last year I had the Macadamia Pineapple Pancakes, and a bite of Richard's TT and that was just right. For me I think it is all of the fat, not the sweetness.

My DH loved it but I thought it was just okay. :)
Of course I also don't like mickey bars.

You do realize that you should probably be wearing a flame suit, right? :rotfl2:

I thought it was super gross. Talk about a pile of grease and fat grams! I couldn't stomach it at all and was so thankful DH ordered it and not me. Even he couldn't finish but a few pieces. Yuck.

So no flames from me, it's icky. ;)

We loved it and hey, we were on vacation, so we dont' worry about the fat and calories since we walked on average 9-10 miles per day while we were there. Our waiter also told us not to use syrup, which I also didnt' plan to. I think they all say that. It was really, really good. Best breakfast I've ever had, no, but very good. My DH and I were there in Nov and we split a Tonga Toast w/bacon and a fruit plate. Plenty of food for two and it wasn't the least bit "icky".

Im glad to hear someone else going against the flow and saying they dont like something that the masses do. I have heard good things about Tonga Toast and am looking forward to trying it. But Im sure it will be just as disappointing as BOMA was to me. Its not that it was bad. Its just that it has been built up so much that no matter how good it is, its just not gonna be good enough.

Well, I just "had" to try the Tonga Toast as well.............. the good thing is, I got the recipe from allears, and made it at home........... it is good, but not so good that we'll get it on our trip in a few weeks!!!! It is really "sweet" if you add syrup, which of course we did!! I think that every once in awhile, it could be a nice treat.......... but, I wouldn't go to the Kona Cafe just to get it.

Now, we will be staying at AKL, so we are going to try Boma......... I certainly hope we have better luck there than you did, Stacerita !!!!! :earboy2:

Wow! Don't you sound like a fun person to travel with! :earseek:

Anyways..

I think Tonga Toast is pretty good. Yeah its rich and sweet and fattening- but that's what makes it yummy! My bf and I usually get one order of tonga toast and an order of a regular b-fast w/eggs, bacon, etc. Then we cut the tonga toast in half and share everything.

Here's a pic of Tonga Toast just in case anyone doesn't know what it looks like:

I tried it the first time in December. I had heard so much good things about it that I couldn't wait to try it out. Well, imo tonga toast was oily/greasy. I took two bites and ordered something else. I love sweet stuff but this was just yucky!

I had it for the first time in December also and it was WONDERFUL! I told many people about how good that meal was! DH ordered eggs, hash browns, baccon, etc., and we shared each other's meals so we could taste it all. Even with both of us working on the Tonga Toast, at least a third of it was left over, maybe even a half! It is a rich was to start a day, but ohh, soo good!

We just recently returned from WDW. I ordered the Pineapple Macadamia Pancakes and my daughter ordered the Tonga Toast. We shared the two platters. The Tonga Toast was good, but it didn't have enough bananas in it for me. The pancakes (with the macadamia nut butter) were delicious, but I thought they had too much pineapple on them.

When we return, I will order the Pineapple Macadamia Pancakes and remove some of the pineapple. Of course, my daughter will order the Tonga Toast.

Is this only available at Kona? I am hoping someone will tell me I can get it at the Ohana character breakfast....
