We have Kona booked for breakfast on our leaving day. Tonga Toast looks very interesting- I love french toast and bananas too. But is it very sweet, like overly so. I'm afraid since w'll be driving home, it might be too sweet for me to eat without feeling sick after. I want to try it but may have to do a solo breakfast another day.

Tonga Toast was on the top of my list of new things to try at WDW...until I read a thread quite awhile ago on another board about it. I hear it's incredibly sweet. So much so that you don't even WANT to try it with syrup. From what I understand, it's a good thing to share though!

Well, it is very sweet and we never use the syrup. But it is so good.

Could you share with someone in your family? We have shared the fruit plate and Tonga Toast as well as the Eggs Benedict (well, not exactly light ;) ) with Tonga Toast.

Oh it's excellent though. They do tell you to try it without syrup first, and honestly you don't need the syrup. But it's fabulous. I worried about eating so much sugar early in the morning and then going into the parks all day. I can't deal with a lot of sugar in the morning. But it was sooo good and it didn't upset my stomach at all.

I found it revolting, personally, but I know there are many Tonga Toast lovers who cringe when they hear that! It's very very sweet, heavy, and greasy. We planned a breakfast there just so I could try it but the other party we were dining with warned me against it being so sweet. So, I went with the macadamia nut pancakes and DH got the Tonga Toast because he has a HUGE sweet tooth. I took 2 bites and was so thankful I didn't order it. DH ate about half and felt blech the rest of the morning but he did like it - just couldn't handle that much of it.

If you're dying to try it, maybe you could order 1 to share between the rest of your party?

Something to think about too is besides the sweetness, the last time I had it, it was very greasy. For some people greasy food can upset your stomach so I thought I'd warn you.

I've had it three times now but only noticed the greasyness the last time. I was a bit disappointed.

I do eat it with some syrup but not a lot. :thumbsup2

Thanks. I would share but my DH hates bananas, DD would look at it and say yuck and so would my DS. I probably will pass on ordering it but the pancakes sound real good.

I'm completely with you on this one. I had read so many positive reviews that we specifically went to the Kona for breakfast so that we could try it. I didn't enjoy it all. It was way too sweet for me. I really envied my DH's breakfast of pancakes and eggs. I know that there are a lot of people who are big fans of Tonga Toast, but I will never be one of them.

I hated the Tonga Toast and I am a sweet lover and a banana/french toast lover.

Picture this (to describe Tonga Toast)

Challah bread, stuffed with a banana, then deep fried in oil...then rolled in granulated sugar.

YUCK! It was greasy and overly sugary. The inside where the banana is was cold as well. This was a huge disappointment for me and I did not eat it.

There were much better offerings on the menu.

What she said.

I had Tonga Toast two weeks ago and it was very good.

It was not greasy at all. The waiter told me to try it w/out the syrup first, since alot of people think it is to sweet. I tried it without the syrup and liked it, but I loved it with the syrup!

::yes::
Love all of the ingredients -- until we got to the deep fried in oil -- and then said "No way". Some people have iron stomachs and can eat lots of fried food and not feel it. But, as for me, won't start my day that way or I'd be feeling yucky for many hours to come.

I was going to kona for the tonga toast also. It looks good but i wondered if it had to many bananas in it???

A bite of DH's is enough for me. Many many years ago they offered it fried or baked, your choice. It was lovely when it was baked.

Wow...I don't do well with greasy foods either, but I didn't think it was greasy at all. And I didn't think it really seemed fried in oil. To me, it was like cinnamon/sugar toast with bananas in it more than french toast though. I guess the main thing is, you will have to try it for yourself as everyone has there own opinions. :confused3

I tried Tonga Toast for the first time in February and within the first few bites I started to wonder if my tummy could take it. It is sweet but I think the "fried" quality of it can really get you if you aren't careful. I wasn't sure if I should finish it because I didn't want to take a chance on getting sick in the park afterwards, but I just ate slowly and I survived, lol! I think I would probably try it again if my husband were willing to share half of it, but he didn't think it looked appetizing so that's probably a no-go. I love french toast and bananas and cinnamon and sugar but I think Tonga Toast would be better if they could somehow make it lighter, like maybe baked as someone mentioned.

I had it & loved it, and never have to have it again -- it's just SO MUCH SUGAR, that you really end up crashing two hours later. We're going back to Kona because that Kona press pot is so incredibly worth it - best coffee I've ever had, US or Europe - and because my DH absolutely loved his ham & cheese omelet. I'm not sure what they do to it, but he couldn't stop raving.

If you really want to try it, definitely split it!

We are Tonga Toast fans at my house. I would suggest trying it and not feeling like you have to finish it.

I can totally see where people wouldn't love it because of the fried/sugar aspect.

Me? Bring it on :rotfl2:

I liked it a lot. But there also looked like some other yummy things on the menu as well! I think if I stayed at the Poly, I'd splurge and eat b-fast there several times to try out different things.

But Kona is my fave dinner restaurant as well, so I'm biased :D

We love it. I have never noticed it to be greasy...just amazingly yummmyyy!!!
I also never finish the whole thing.
