Tonga Toast has "changed"

I had Tonga Toast years ago and it was described at the time as banana stuffed French toast, deep fried and rolled in cinnamon sugar. My son had it this week. There was no hint of French toast. It was barely "batter dipped". It's still way too sweet for me. One bite and that's it.

Where did you/he have it this week? The Tonga Toast at Kona Cafe is (supposed to be) French Toast, while the Tonga Toast at Captain Cooks is not French Toast, but sourdough bread.

I sure hope that the original has survived. It has been a favorite since it was served at the Tangaroa Terrace in the 1970s. My brother and I always ordered it.

It was sourdough sort-of-French Toast (nothing like I make) at Kona in 2010 and a couple times after that....

But the change isn't recent.

Then it seemed to change back.

Except that that article states that it's french bread. Which was kind of the problem.

My sons ordered it at Kona cafe and absolutely nothing like the original at Tangaroa Terrace. Even then it was sweet but was actually French toast. The Samoan is gone but the Eggs Benedict with the pork belly is an acceptable substitute.

Tonga Toast is amazing every time I eat it. I didn't notice a change. I like sourdough and I don't normally like French Toast (aversion to egg!) so if it has been sourdough for a few years (at Kona) then that explains why I like it. You need sides of sausage/bacon to ensure it doesn't get too sweet on the palate. The strawberry compote is amazing too. Ok, now I've made myself hungry.
