I heard that Tom Sawyer Island and the Riverboat ride is closing at some point. Is there any information as to when it might close? I'm going to Magic Kingdom in December, and I hope it's still open at that time.

I don't believe there's been any official closing date announced yet. Reporting is they're planning on starting construction in 2025, so you should be in good shape for your December trip.

ANNOUNCED per Scott Gustin (highly reliable source)

@ScottGustin

NEW: July 6 will be the last day to experience Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Belle at Magic Kingdom. All three attractions will close beginning July 7 to make way for the Cars-themed expansion coming to Frontierland.

Anyone have an idea as to how soon can we expect the walls to go up? Will they wall off the entirety of the river?

I would anticipate walls/greenery to be up July 7th when the park opens. We don't really know how it will happen but personally I anticipate the full area around Rivers of America will be blocked off for the duration of the building of this new Cars-themed land.

After today's announcement I am mostly upset that the train will be down again for an extended time. I am not able to get to the parks often. Last time I was there in December 2022 the train wasn’t operating. Now it will be a modified version for my trip this December. According to the dis unplugged today they believe this will effect the train for the next decade.

We are visiting at the end of July. We got the 3-park summer ticket deal and were going to get a one day ticket to MK. I was looking forward to visiting Tom Sawyer Island again as I did when I was a child but with all the closures and referbs (Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Astro Orbiter, Tom Sawyer, River Boats, and Hall of Presidents) and cost to visit MK equal to visiting Epic universe maybe we will rethink our plans. The added nighttime parade does not look to tip the balance. All the other rides we want will be there next year and also open. Since Disney only came out with the 3-park summer ticket this leaves our options open. If they are going to charge epic prices for mediocre experience I would not be surprised if others do the same.

I’d rather see the train go in a modified “hogwarts express” esque shuttle mode instead of close completely

I understand going to Epic, we want to also.

But I hesitate to call Space Mountain, Tron, Haunted Mansion, Tiana's, Pirate's, Mine Train, Peter Pan, Small World, People Mover, Jungle Cruise, rest of rides, shows, parades, fireworks, etc. a "mediocre" experience, but maybe you guys aren't fans of the old schools rides, which is cool too.

I mean, I'm excited for Cars land, but I will be sad to see Tom Sawyer go. I'm so glad I got to visit one last time in February with my 3 boys.

WDWNT said construction walls won't be erected for a few weeks after closure, and that a rep from Imagineering said when the walls are in place they won't obstruct guest pathways or parade viewing areas. link I'm wonder if whether or not the path along the river will be walled off for the duration. Rather looks like it survives in the new concept art so maaaaybe there's a chance it stays around for a bit?

A decade? Oof. It's all the rage to dunk on Disney these days and boy howdy they don't have a great rep for building quickly- but don't let the speculators get you that down. Nobody knows if they're going to keep the train closed through this and Villains land construction, that seems ridiculous as it appears the train will only affect a small amount of Villains land. Speculation is Disney is looking at getting cars open by 2029ish so half a decade unfortunately sounds in the cards but a whole decade seems egregiously negative.

I had "plans" to get down to WDW for one last visit to TSI (DH's childhood favorite) and catch the new nighttime parade (my childhood favorite). That bubble has burst. Aaah, the plans we make in our head with Disney's vague "Summer" open/close dates.

Still pricing out a 1-day trip for DH and I but the new nighttime parade will have to wait.
