Let me preface this by saying I really like Tom Hanks. While tuning in and out of the Oscars last night, I caught Tom Hanks doing a presentation to, I can't even remember who. When he was ready the teleprompter, he and his partner, seemed to lack the ability to act! DS#3 turned to me and said, "What's up with that? I thought these people were actors?"

I wondered if there were problems with the teleprompters last night. When Clint Eastwood was talking he looked totally lost like he didn't know what he was supposed to be saying.

I like Tom Hanks, too. Did you notice his hair? Was it real? It looked kind of thick for him, if I remember correctly from the last time I saw him.

He was stumbling a bit, but I heard him mumble, "I should have worn my glasses . . ."

Yup, don't blame anything on Hanks that you will not pin on Clint. Clint's "performance" was much worse.

I agree that it looked like something was wrong with things on a technical level and it was tripping people up.

Also do not confuse acting with presenting, acting does not involve reading and autocue in time and presenting does not involve emoting.

There is a vast, vast difference in being given a script and days to weeks ahead of time to rehearse & memorize it, versus being handed a sheet of paper with your presentation speech 5 minutes before you go on to "familiarize" yourself with it and being told you'll be able to read it off the teleprompter. You get out there, only to find the camera's teleprompter is 10 feet away, with smaller type than what you can read at that distance, with a sticky word crawler and stagelights beamed right at you so you can't even see the words to read them, if you could.

I mentioned that to my DH last night. I wonder if it is for a current movie?

How long can it take to perfect a "presentation", especially one so short that you get to read.
