Driving from Miami to Connecticut up I-95....Budget rental car says to sign up for their plate pass at $13.49 per day....is this charge for everyday i have the car (14 days/$188.86) or is it only on the days i use it???

🤷🏽‍♀️
Interesting question and looking forward to a response.
When we rented via ZipCar, we were only charged for the cost of any toll we passed.

You will need to call Budget if you are looking for a quick answer. In the past anyway, some companies charge just the days you use it and others are everyday you have the rental.

I would get my own toll transporter and use that if you do not already have your own. You can add a rental to your account for the time you have it. Just make sure to delete it off your account after you are done to avoid paying for someone elses tolls after you no longer have the rental.

Are there actually any tolls on I-95 between Miami and CT? I know there are tolls on the Florida Turnpike but that's not the same road as I-95.

I should have been clearer, there are no tolls from Miami to Virginia...there are from virginia and points north...

some people are saying you can use your EZPass transponder...others say no.....anyone know for sure???

Even though CT has no toll roads, it may still be worthwhile for you to get your own E-ZPass toll transponder instead. You could select one of the nearby states or FL and do an online purchase. The toll savings alone will quickly offset the small cost of a transponder compared to paying the rental car fees or all-in daily fee toll option. See https://www.e-zpassiag.com/about-e-zpass/where-can-i-use-it and check Amazon for E-ZPass transponders.

is that your own car....i'm using a rental from Budget....wondering how that works??
The transponders are supported by an app or web site from the issuing state agency. You enter the license plate number of the rental car to associate the transponder with the vehicle for the length of the rental. Be sure to remove the license plate from the web site/app at the end of the rental and to remove your transponder from the rental car.

Some of rental cars may have their own transponder, mounted in a metal box that has a movable shutter that should be closed to block the signal from that transponder so only the one you supply will be read when paying tolls. Sometimes, there is no transponder and the rental car license plate is used to assess tolls (called toll-by-plate) if no transponder is present in the rental car. If you supply your own transponder, this takes priority over toll-by-plate transactions. With my most recent Budget rentals, it’s been about 50-50 as to whether a rental car has a transponder vs. using toll-by-plate. We’ve been using the Central Florida Expressway UniPass for a number of years in a variety of Budget or Alamo rental cars in multiple states without problems.

I have EZPass so I don't believe I have to add the rental car plate number.... 2nd paragraph was quite helpful ...I appreciate the input and will follow your procedure....thank you both Ralph&Pam:)

Check with your issuing agency, and you may want to add it anyway. The reason for adding the plate is in case the transponder is not read for any reason at the toll. If the license plate is attached to an EZ Pass account, the toll will be charged to the EZ Pass, if it's not it will go to the owner of the vehicle. If the Budget rental has a transponder, it's 50/50 whether the tolling agency will hit the Budget EZ Pass account or yours first if they go for it.

Budget has three toll options. You pay everything, which is what we are talking about with using your own transponder. Budget pays everything which is the $13.49 a day, you'd have to read the fine print and see if that is every day or only on the days used.
And the default, which is a $6.95 daily fee plus the full cash cost of the tolls. This fee is only charged on days that you incur tolls.

$6.95 only on days I use it sounds perfect....thanks for that info...much appreciated!

NY Ezpass site tells us NOT to add the plate information for rentals.

Interesting. I wonder why that is. Perhaps afraid that people will forget to delete it when the rental is done?

So it appears the answer is to waive the "Plate Pass" fee with Budget and use my own NY EZPass....thank you all for the input!

NY EZPASS instructs us to attach the pass to the windshield. You can buy a suction cup mount. I used extra velcro. I removed the velcro from the windshield with my fingernails.

Posters who hold the pass or rest it on the dash will occasionally miss tolls.
