I am planning on getting the ez pass and trying to figure out the tolls. I went to i95exitguide.com and added up the tolls from ct to florida for both ways and it seems that it would be about $65. Since I am new to ezpass I want to make sure I have the money in the account before I go even though I signed up where they add $20 when it gets down to $10. I just don't want it where I am traveling in all in one day and it gets down to 0 and it doesn't have time to replenish OR does it replenish instantaneously?

Ezpass will replenish automatically. If you know, in advance, what the tolls are going to be you can go online to the ezpass site and make a one-time payment to cover yourself. I did that when I went to Ohio on the PA Turnpike, that way I knew I had enough funds in my EZPass account. Is the $65 you quoted round-trip, because it seems a bit high, remember that the Hudson River Crossings you only pay one-way.
Remember also, that FL toll roads are not on the EZPass system.

If memory serves me correctly, you will pay tolls at:

  • New England Thruway (from CT/NY state line to NYC)
  • George Washington Bridge (from NYC to NJ)
  • New Jersey Turnpike (through entire state of NJ)
  • Delaware River Memorial Bridge (from NJ to DE)
  • John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway (I-95 in DE)
  • Harbor Tunnel (in Baltimore)
As you can see, an E-Z Pass is in your absolute best interest, as they are time savers. Typically, E-Z Pass (and other toll tags) automatically replenish when you reach a certain threshold.

Otherwise, you shouldn't have to pay any more tolls after Baltimore (assuming you are doing the I-95/I-4 route that so many others do) -- if I missed something, I am sure someone will correct what I said...

We finally did EZ Pass last Aug after traveling for 4 yrs. It was the BEST decision EVER. I don't know what took us this long to do it. We are in CT and travel to VA for the Autotrain. I want to say we spend about $30 in tolls. Some of the bridges are $5 or higher. We started out w/ $50 on our way down and they replenished it on the way back.

It makes a big difference in our trip-- no more slowing down and trying to figure which 1 or 2 lanes out of 10 or so are cash only. Just remember to obey the speed limit going thru the toll itself. You can receive a fine for going thru too fast.

We did our EZPass thru NY. It was shipped fairly quickly. DH's family is from NY city and I have no clue why we didn't get on eons ago.

If you load it w/ $50 you should be fine on your trip down and then it would reload on the way back. It is connected to you cc so I don't see a problem with reloading it if you got low. Plus it will give you a low balance message as you go thru a toll. Thou we never got one.

Enjoy your trip!

If it's set to reload automatically, no worries. Just drive!

They're pretty forgiving if you go through a toll and your transponder doesn't get read, and presumably if your account hasn't replenished as well (as long as you are on file and they do get paid). At least that's how it's been the couple of times over the years I've gone through a toll where it wasn't properly read... that hasn't happened in years, though.

thanks OP for starting it. And EZPass sounds like the way to go when we drive DD to Sarasota next month. Is there a site I can access that will show the $ I will need for the trip? We rarely drive on toll roads so I won't really need it outside of the trip.

This is the best link I have seen on the subject.

You may have to poke-around a little to get the individual tolls, etc.
