Toll question

The toll roads in the Orlando area are really very nice. I have no problem paying to be on them. And I'm morally opposed to toll roads and bridges in my own area; they seem to be worse than the normal roads!

I guess I am not understanding something, or maybe other DVCers spend more time driving around Orlando than we do. We generally are only on one toll road, 417, going to and from the airport. 2 toll booths, $3.00 total toll each way. Absolutely worth it to avoid heavy traffic on freeways (and 417 is even 70 MPH now). We never have to wait for more than a few cars at the toll booths, although I will admit that we don't do Easter/Christmas high seasons anymore and often fly in/out midweek. I don't understand what the big deal is with Sunpass?

We do the same. I'd estimate that the slow down for us is In the 45-90 second range. The times we aren't pulling up behind someone who is in the process of paying and are next in line is very rare. And if I did the correct change lanes it would be even faster, but we don't because I also want a receipt. I'd think I'd spend at least quadruple that amount of time, or more, packing the sunpass device and then placing it in the rental car. I did look at it a little while ago but the cash lanes are just too fast and easy so I'm sticking with them as long as they have them.

I don't get it either. I'm confused why anyone would want to put money on deposit for two to four tolls per year. Plus I believe they charge for the transponder (can't remember, it's been a while since I bought it).

Anyway, to each their own!!

I do the same, but we always use the cash lane. My daughter just returned from West Palm and was told by car rental that there are only sunpass or exact change lanes on 417. She paid an additional $30 for it.I don t want to purchase a sunpass for $30 if I can pay $3.00 like we always do. I'm confused too, haven t got the right answer yet.

Depends on how often you use the pass. We like to rent a car sometimes, visit other areas around Florida. Don't always know where the toll roads are and the sunpass toll rate is discounted. I ordered the pass from home (Texas), paying for the convenience was worth it to us and it isn't much money when you think about what it costs for a Disney vacation.

I'm not sure about those locations but some locations the charges are a little less using sunpass though not enough to drive such a decision. It likely isn't worth it just for one trip a year to and from the airport to get a Surpass $$$ wise but it is a little easier and faster for those so inclined. The system in HH charges a monthly fee, I think it was $2.50 a month plus the other charges. IMO, for the airport there it's not worth trying to avoid the tolls either way for this situation, for a 5 day a week commute it might be depending specifics. There are locations though where you can't pay with cash and it's either toll by plate or Surpass only. Apparently this is becoming increasingly common, esp in South FL. The other issue is that they are also increasingly putting in the system where you don't go through a toll booth or if you do, you basically have to exit to the side to do so. You just pass under at highway speeds and it reads the transponder, the one on 417 is this way though not applicable to the airport. The transponders are $5 for the one that can't be moved and $20 for the other type plus tax. At one point they were mailing them for free and giving a $5 credit for the one that attaches ($5 one).

I basically travel from the Airport on 417 to exit 6. That is 2x $1.50 tolls. Up until now, each has had a quarter drop and a toll collector.
We also drive to visit friend that live in east of WDW in Davenport. Usually on I4 but can take 192, it just takes 2 to 3 times longer. No tolls on either route.
It that still the way it is? Our last trip to WDW was 6 months ago, I hope things are the same. Or do I need to get some sort of a transponder?

I don't travel that route so I can't say for certain. http://floridasturnpike.com/TollCalcV5/index.htm is the toll calculator for sunpass. I can't imagine they'd make a surpass only without options for the main roads but some of the exits are that way. I think Oseola is Central FL expressway though a sunpass will work, it has cash options on the main road. I'm thinking that the entrance westbound by the Walmart at 535 is coins only.

Thanks Dean
You're welcome of course. While looking at this info I was pleasantly surprised to find that the toll differences between cash and surpass was more than I thought it would be. Still likely not worth fooling with just for the limited savings but if one is so incline anyway for the convenience, it's an added bonus. It also works for parking at the airport IIRC.
