I just took my dd-22 to O'Hare airport. When I finally got back on the bi-pass, I didn't get in the correct lane fast enough. I ended up in the lane where you have a pass to go through. There was no way I could get 3 lanes over to get in the "cash only lane". There was a huge cement barrier seperating the two area, so even if I wanted to get over, I couldn't. So what happens now, will I get a huge fine in the mail.

Also on the last toll before the airport it was .80. We could not get a green lite to go, we threw in another quarter, that didn't do it, so another and another. Finally I said screw it. We just went.

Welcome to Illinois-ba-humbug.

Go to the Illinois Toll Highway Authority's Toll Violation Enforcement System (VES) page. There are links for "how to pay a missed toll" and "how to pay a toll violation."

I would suggest paying the missed toll when you were in the dedicated I-PASS Only lane, but not repaying the toll that just didn't register properly.

Thank you for not having toll roads in Wisconsin!

My tollbooth story is that twice in the same day I had no change whatsoever at two unmanned tollbooths - one in Chicago near O'hare and one at the Osceola Blvd. exit off 417 in Kissimmee. I was sure I was going to get a huge fine for not having 25 cents on me! Nothing happened, fortunately.

1. Slow down sooner and then you can get across to the desired lane.

2. I would not put in more than the correct toll unless I did not have the mandatory exact change.

Don't worry about it. My husband takes 294 to work daily so he has the I-Pass. He has several times taken my car without the I-pass and just gone through the I-pass lane on accident. It's a habit and he doesn't realize it until he doesn't hear the beep. We haven't gotten a fine yet. :confused3

I agree with you I live here in Chicago area and I refuse to use the toll roads ever since they change to I pass and the stupid law about the left lane. I have to go to my brothers every so often and I could get there faster on the toll road but not at risking my life to drivers who need to drive 100 miles an hour and the cops do nothing to stop this.

Are the I-pass lanes (soon accepting northeast EZ Pass) on the right or the left or both?

As you approach the toll plaza you whether or not driving an 18 wheeler should be in a lane that lines up with the toll booth lane you need.

What is the stupid law and isn't it a separate independent unrelated topic to the 100 mph drivers?

The I-PASS-only lanes tend to be on the left. The self-service cash lanes tend to be in the center. The cashier lanes tend to be on the right. All lanes accept I-PASS. A few very large toll plazas also have special truck lanes. Toll off-ramps usually have no cashiers, only self-service cash lanes which also take I-PASS.

Yes, there are large overhead lane signs. But sometimes, when there's a backup, someone who is not familiar with a toll plaza could find himself in the wrong lane with no way to get out.

I assume that "stupid law" refers to the toll change about a year ago. To encourage the use of I-PASS, cash tolls doubled, while I-PASS tolls stayed the same. I-PASS tolls tend to be 40 cents, and cash tolls tend to be 80 cents.

Speed is another issue. Although there are speed limits, the Illinois State Police seem to tolerate at least 10 mph above the speed limit as long as a driver isn't doing something dumb like constantly zipping from one lane to another. Drivers on I-94 in the Land of Lincoln south of the Wisconsin-Illinois line are noticeably faster than in the Dairy State. However, the Illinois State Police do not tolerate 100 mph drivers!

About 2 months ago I received a letter in the mail from the Illinois Tollbooth people. They sent me a very nice letter with a photo! The photo was of me in my car driving through a toll that I didn't pay (It was a nice clear photo! I even had my sunglasses on! hahah) I did this 5 times during the course of 2005. How do I know it was 5 times? They showed me! Not only did I have to pay the toll, but each violation cost me a $20 fine.

I wouldn't worry if you do it once in a blue moon, but be careful!

I've noticed that in some places the middle truck only lanes now say cars too.

Most times if I'm exiting right after the toll area I go through the exact change or the manned booths. Once they hear the beep, they wave you through.

If we are going to be accepting EZ pass, will FL be accepting our I pass? If so, I'll have to decide whether to keep my EZ pass or my I pass (or maybe I'll keep both).

I travel on 294 daily between home and work and with the construction on the I Pass lanes it is very easy to end up stuck in the I pass only lanes with no way to get back to the manual lanes. For all of you from Indiana and Wisconsin that avoid the tollway be aware that a 2 year construction project is starting on the Dan Ryan Expressway and the only advise that is being offered by the state is to "act as if the Dan Ryan does not exist"

Yeah, my son tried that with a car that I co-signed for him to get. When they finally caught up with him (me) they were about to suspend my license and the fines totaled to over $400 (for just a few $ missed tolls). It ended up costing me $225 to keep my license from being suspended.
